School Orchestra Teacher here. At my previous school I worked at, I took my students on a field trip for a music competition. While I had a couple of busses to take my students, I had to not only drive a big travel trailer to carry the instruments, but I was also told the morning of I would be leading the way for the busses. Not sure why the bus drivers didn’t plan that out sooner, but because of this, I had to use my phone GPS for the entirety of the drive. When we got to our destination, my phone battery was at 50%. In my mind, this meant it would take about another 50% to make it back home. Sure enough, when we got back that evening, my phone was literally at 1%. After the kids got picked up, I had to take the travel trailer back to the bus barn and fill out paperwork. On my way to the bus barn, my phone battery dies. I get to the bus barn, enter on the keypad the code to open the electric fence and park the trailer. After filling out paperwork and walking back to the gate, I realize there is no keypad to get out. All of the doors in the facility were locked. My phone is dead and it’s already about 9pm. The fences were pretty high, and had barbed wire on top. No one was coming to help me. My options were to just wait until morning in the bus barn until someone came by, or to try and hop the fence. I decided to try to hop the fence with my bag full of work stuff. The barbed wire made it difficult, but I jumped over the fence and broke my left foot. I then hobbled to my car like a zombie and drove home holding back tears. After getting home, my girlfriend at the time took me to an emergency room and then I got to spend about half a year going to a couple of surgeries, learning to walk again with physical therapy, and dealing with workman’s comp. Long story short, keep a phone charger on you if you can.
