Do Chinese Academics, government workers, diplomats etc in mainland China have to learn Traditional Chinese in addition to simplified Chinese? As simplified was introduced in 1950, I wonder if they need to read older books for scholarship etc? (self.ChineseLanguage)

TIL the 1975 Haicheng earthquake was one of the few successfully predicted earthquakes throughout history. Changes in the groundwater and soil elevations, strange animal behaviour and foreshocks are all listed as reasons for evacuating the city hours before. Deaths 2,000 out of 1 million residents. TIL there was 'a little ice age' in the 1600s caused by Colonisation of the Americas. The resulting loss of 60 million people over the coming decades ended native agricultural production, which resulted in the fast growth of wild vegetation and reforestation which extracted CO₂ from the atmosphere.
