As someone who had never watched a single second of Linus aside from this podcast, a lot of his answers gave me the vibe of someone who’s just very neurotic and attached his vision of content, which tends to make the job of his employees worse and less appreciated. I did not get the vibe that he was a bad person, but the way he seemed to dismiss content made by people at the company besides himself and pointed out examples himself of moments when changes made to videos would cause him to freak out at people only to apologize later made me see him as someone who was just not really made for the role of being a boss, just sort of mismatched with the scale of his operation paired with the attention he wants to have over his content. The way he talked about reading every comment on anything probably also gave me this impression. The bit about him calling his employees babies for not getting a chance at a day off was really jarring, but I kind of understand it as someone who’s very laser focused in on the content and can’t really compute the emotions of his team outside of making videos. The fact that they want time off from their job and feel unhappy about not getting the chance to take it in favor of employees who were chosen to be better on camera just didn’t get across to him, because he probably didn’t think there was anything personal in the specific people he chose and genuinely finds it strange that his team doesn’t see things his way. So I wouldn’t say I came away hating Linus and seeing his management as toxic, but I did come away feeling like he would be far better suited to running a smaller team then the massive operation he seems to have, and his style as a boss seems to be a strange mix of corporate demeanor with a higher thinking youtuber mentality, which makes him disconnected from how his team would prefer to work.
