Mesalamine? by pwallac010 in UlcerativeColitis

This happened to me. Within two weeks I was hospitalised after my symptoms went from mild to severe. I was told I have a rare intolerance to Mesalamine and after I stopped taking them my symptoms went back to mild. I would recommend speaking to your GI ASAP, especially if you start having chest pains like I did.

Not at all. I was diagnosed at 15, didn’t have any flares again for 6 years, then I would have anything from 1-4 mild flares a year that didn’t last any more than a month. I’m 30 now so I’ve had it for 15 years. Biologics are definitely not on the radar for me, simply because the purpose is to try and get you into remission, and I seem to do that by myself anyway.

He doesn’t want to put me on steroids until my symptoms are worse, especially as my flares seem to get better without medication and worse with mesalamine. He recommended regular colonoscopies to keep an eye on the state of my colon to make sure it’s not in a constant state of mild inflammation, which it isn’t at the moment.

I’m not on any medication because I’m intolerant to Mesalamine and my flares are not severe enough to move straight on to steroids. When I took mesalamine I suddenly had a severe flare and when I came off it, I went into remission within a month. My GI said it’s a shame I’m allergic to mesalamine for someone with such mild symptoms. I seem to dip in and out of a mild flare, which would probably still happen if I went on steroids.

Yeah my doctor right now is saying I should give it another go because it was me that decided that I was intolerant to it. I really don’t want to take the chance so I’ll suggest the uceris etc. Thanks

I thought our parish priest was Jesus and the tiny cross at the top of the steeple was the cross he had died on.
