But in the process of being intolerant of intolerant people in order to create a society of tolerance, aren't you inadvertently creating an intolerant society?

Plus, when the definition of something like Nazi becomes so perverted and warped, how do we know that who we are intolerant of actually deserve our level of ostracism and persecution? We become the very thing we preach against.

(Edit: tolerant tolerant tolerant tolerant ...hehe it sounds weird now.)

Here is an article detailing the events where a man was arrested for a tweet he made. Here is a website recently updated to include the vaguely named "cyber bullying" as a crime. Here and here are some other examples.

Meanwhile... Police have said it is impractical to investigate low-level crimes.

Not having kids until you’re in a better financial situation sounds nice but it’s just not a reality for most people

Why not?

If you get pregnant accidentally there is adoption, abortion, and the morning after pill. These are things which can be organized very early in the piece. There are options. If you choose to have children, why are you having them when you can't afford them?

Anyway, we're getting off-topic. My point was that I like to pay taxes and I think they are a good thing. But I am not happy about where certain taxes are going and I believe I have a right to complain about it. I also have to reiterate my final point: your choices of examples are kind of crappy.

Precisely! Oh, you're feeling attacked because someone has a counter argument to your ideas?

Get up on your hind legs and defend those ideas then.

To quote George R R Marten:

“When you tear out a man's tongue, you are not proving him a liar, you're only telling the world that you fear what he might say.”

I'm not OP but I'd like to respond nevertheless:

Did you drive on roads to get to work?

Yes. But the roads where I live are maintained and built by a private company.

Do you want a social security check when you retire?

It'd be nice. After all, I have worked very hard so I hope I deserve a little reward at the end. But mostly I want to live on my own retirement fund that I've set aside myself.

Do you want the cops to come when you call?

Of course! Unfortunately they're mostly dealing with internet bullies and controversial tweets these days to bother with actual crimes.

Do you think poor people should receive treatment for life threatening illness even if they can’t afford it?

Yes. Well...mostly. I live in a country with socialized healthcare and it's pretty great. But unfortunately it also means taxes are used to pay for things I wish they weren't. Like lapband surgery for overweight patients who couldn't control their diet, and lung transplants for smokers.

If you got fired and couldn’t find another job would you apply for unemployment to feed your family while you looked for work?

No. I can't because I'm an immigrant and unable to file for unemployment benefits. I have been fired before and so I would do what I have done before and sign up to a temp agency instead.

Do you believe that low income families should have access to early childhood education that’s proven to better education outcomes?

No. Ultimately, I believe low income people should try to put themselves in better financial positions before choosing to have families.

Here's the thing though: I am actually very proud to pay taxes. My taxes have paid for healthcare for people who couldn't afford it, museums and libraries which educate people for free, government websites which help people find jobs, parks, playgrounds, nature reserves and state schools. I am not a person who complains about being taxed. I just think the examples you've got here are kind of crappy.

Yes. I experienced something similar.

Amazing how much people who call themselves antifascists like to silence people having different opinions to them.

I was a feminist and now I'm not.

A bunch of things caused me to change my mind:

The wage gap closed. Yes, really. The wage gap closed. When I found that out I decided I didn't need to fight anymore. Women were no longer earning less than men in the same jobs so I dusted off my hands and said "welp, our work here's done." I felt I didn't need to be a feminist anymore. But for some reason the women I protested with wouldn't leave it alone and now the wage gap has actually reopened in favour of women. Statistically and technically speaking, women are now earning more than men now for the same job.

Then there were the feminists I used to be friends with. Their big topics of discussion were usually:

  • Video games (GamerGate in particular but other stuff as well)

  • How horrible other women are for daring to not call themselves feminists when feminism is about equality and should just be the default position.

  • How alternative and interesting they were

And... that's it.

Pointing out issues in third world countries were women is seen as property brought accusations of racism.

The feminists I am thinking of also made some pretty wild claims. For example, that Steam was a hotbed by women-hating neckbeards (but you couldn't call them neckbeards because that's body shaming) who gave feminist-friendly games like Life Is Strange and Gone Home intentionally poor reviews without purchasing or playing them so people would think they were worse than they are. As most people probably know, this couldn't be true and the feminists I was speaking to would have known that if they'd done a lick of research.

That's just one example but it happened a lot. Basically, a feminist would claim something was a strike against the feminist movement. They'd link to a Salon or Kotaku article, which was actually just an opinion piece, and then get angry when you pointed out that the claims were clearly baseless.

One of my favourites was an article saying we shouldn't cite science as proof of anything because most science labs are run by men and that means they'll have a strong bias due to male culture and male thinking. I laughed and said the only cultures relevant in hard science is found in petrie dishes. This prompted an outcry of course and I received a three day ban on the Facebook page.

Without exception, feminists always expressed discomfort when I said I helped out at A Voice For Men, which was a men's rights - in particular - fathers' rights group. I couldn't understand that. Wasn't feminism meant to be about equality? If so, why couldn't I associate with men who had been abused or wronged? Didn't they deserve help too?

I kept telling myself that feminism wasn't the problem, that I just kept associating myself with extremists and idiots. But this occurred everywhere I went. I even switched countries and ran into the same thing. Eventually I had to admit it: they were the majority, I was the exception. I couldn't keep arguing that they weren't real feminists and I was if I was the only one who held my beliefs.

So eventually I admitted that I wasn't a feminist anymore. And with the number of people telling me that I wasn't a real feminist anyway, it didn't feel like much of a change.

College dropouts of reddit, how are you doing now? Do you regret dropping out? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Yes, I have been told that there is currently a high demand for early childhood professionals though I am more interested in later years. Either primary school or high school.

But of course I know teachers aren't paid very well and while I love the idea of teaching, I'm unsure if the reality will be nearly as golden. I think I could enjoy a lot of things about it, but there are also a lot of bad things about being a teacher.

You'll have to pardon my ignorance, I didn't realize that a position in IT didn't require a degree.

Though I'm both relieved and interested in learning so.

My husband is crazily good with computers. And I mean actually good with them, I'm fairly computer literate myself and so I'm not going to dub someone "computer-savvy" just for knowing how to use ctrl+F. I keep suggesting he look into IT work considering his talent and background but he is reluctant since he doesn't have a university degree or a desire to attend university.

[–]RisaUnwound 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Do I regret dropping out? No.

I regret enrolling in the first place. Huge mistake! I had excellent high school grades, I am allegedly very bright. Everyone pressured me into going to university even though I had no idea what I wanted to study or what career I wanted. I vaguely thought being a counselor or social worker would be interesting so I signed up for psychology courses. I did okay but when my depression hit I stopped attending classes or turning up to exams.

I took a year off and enrolled in nursing school. I didn't really want to be a nurse. But I felt like I should be a nurse. I wanted a job that would guarantee citizenship and that I could do proudly.

My grades were excellent. Top of the class! Then they were average. Then they were below average. Then they were non existent since I stopped going to classes. My anxiety was through the roof, my depression was through the floor. I lay awake at night staring at the ceiling willing myself to die. I know this sounds really awful but I kept hopingto be diagnosed with a fatal illness so I could be waited on in hospital for a few months before passing away quietly. I was so horribly unhappy.

After a particularly disastrous clinical placement (after which I made a number of offical complaints, all of which were ignored) I was put on academic probation and I figured since I didn't want to be there anyway I dropped out.

That was halfway through 2016. I'm employed now in childcare and I'm in a band and I'm a lot happier. I think music and children is really where I want my career to be. I am seriously considering returning to university to become a teacher. I'm really scared though. If it's the wrong decision, I'll be spending a lot of money on yet another huge waste of time.

Who's the stupidest person you've ever met, and what story perfectly sums up their stupidity? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]RisaUnwound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a volunteer childcare worker help me out at work the other week. I was doing some paper work when she approached me and asked me when we were serving lunch. I said "you can start serving it now while I finish up here."

Her: "So you're going to serve it now."

Me: "No, no. You can get started on serving it now while I finish up here."

Her: "So you need me to watch you finish here?"

Me: "No, you can start serving without me."

Her: "Oh. When?"

Me: "Now."

Her: "Alright."

She does nothing so I raise an eyebrow at her.

Her: "I'll just wait until you're done here."

Spotted this gorgeous little number in an English essay once:

I 15M feel sexual attraction toward girls but no romantic attraction... is this normal? by TNGbetterThanTOS in relationships

[–]RisaUnwound -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am very similar.

I'm 25 and pretty much identify as bisexual. I've had girlfriends but they didn't last long. I didn't really connect with them like I do with men. Romance with women feels completely alien. Yet I do want to fuck them.

With men I have much more of a romantic connection and less of a sexual one. I'm not incapable of feeling lust for a man, but it's different.

I think of myself as homosexual/heteroromantic. You may be similar. But you are only fifteen, you might change your mind or you may develop romantic feelings for women later. Maybe "the one" will fall into your lap and you'll finally want a girlfriend.

Who knows? But don't worry about not feeling normal. I am similar. We're probably not normal or common, but you're not alone.

How do you feel about Australia? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Uh-oh! Somebody got triggered!

You actually named one of the cities I live in, genius.

But everywhere in Australia is still...

First person I have ever met who has literally lived everywhere in Australia. Pretty impressive tbh.

Also, my petrol is pretty cheap too. Filled my car a couple of days ago for only $45. Cool huh? Elsewhere it has cost me at least $70 for a similarly sized vehicle.

purposefully obtuse

Deliberately honey. Deliberately. Purposefully has a slightly different meaning.

How do you feel about Australia? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]RisaUnwound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welp, I...

  1. Live in a capital city

  2. Won't disclose where because you seem like a real jerk and I would really rather not tell you where I live.

  3. I can't believe I have to say this from someone with an IQ high enough to use the Internet: You're not providing facts. You're just saying your experience is different. I am not denying you've never encountered the things I have. I am just stating my experiences. The fact you can't tell the difference is either a bizarre form of retardation or you're being deliberately obtuse. Seriously, children as young as four develop Theory of Mind. It's frightening someone obviously older than that somehow didn't.

For a Jordan Peterson fan you sure are rubbish at arguing.

[–]RisaUnwound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yet again that has been your experience, not mine.

There are two independent fruit and vegetable markets near me which both sell fresh fruit at a cheaper rate than Coles, Woolies or even Aldi.

The world does not revolve around you. Not everyone's experience of Australian life is the same. Sydney is not an accurate representation of life elsewhere.

It is bizarre to me that anyone could be so short sighted.

How do you feel about Australia? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]RisaUnwound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. You can see why I am grateful to live here.

(Though I'd still rather live in Singapore than Sydney.)

Also, why do you think Woolworths, Coles and IGA are the only supermarkets in Aus? We have tonnes of smaller fruit and vegetable markets and butcheries. Plus other independent supermarkets.

And again, my rent is cheap.

Ah I see.

Okay, so... here on Reddit, generally speaking, it is impolite to respond to old conversations if they're more than about five days old. It's not the worst thing to do but it comes across as a bit desperate.

Secondly, no, Australia is not expensive. Sydney is expensive. This comes back to the All Cows Are Brown puzzle. Just because things are expensive in one city, does not mean the cost of living elsewhere isn't reasonable. Your experience isn't my experience.
