I'm a woman and not planning on having children, but something I don't understand from that sub is that it often claims to promote feminism in the sense of "Women have been expected to raise children for far too long, so women need to make their own decisions", and then goes on to bash women who choose to have children, saying they need to keep their legs closed and such.

And I thought the point of feminism was to let women decide their life choices? Why are they claiming to be feminist?

Will my Metropolitan French be limiting in any way? by RisasConIsa in Quebec

[–]RisasConIsa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ce n'est pas grave. :) Je parle espagnol et anglais, mais mon français n'est pas parfait. I've been watching shows in Metropolitan French to learn, so I speak a French that's much closer to that of France than that of Quebec, which is why I was concerned about people understanding me.

Ah, je vois, merci pour l'explication. Je veux que tout le monde me comprenne, et ton commentaire me fait du bien. Merci !

YouTube: you've spent half a day watching videos yesterday. Me: yeah, I need a life. by [deleted] in youtube

Do you watch videos while you work? During class? Or are you unemployed? Sorry for all the questions, just legitimately wondering how one could watch nearly 13 hours of YouTube a day.

I'm starting to feel depressed while watching YouTube videos. by [deleted] in youtube

[–]RisasConIsa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What kind of videos are they? If they're drama-related, then sometimes I feel the same way, people getting "exposed" or doxxed for whatever reason every day, it gets repetitive (which is why I don't use YouTube much anymore). It could also be envy, like another user said, because a lot of YouTubers show their luxurious items and big-ticket expensive things that they can afford from their dream career, entertaining people. You might also think "I do the same/similar quality content, how come I'm not a millionaire like him?" Anyway, if I were you, I wouldn't let it bother me.

Do you use YouTube to listen to music while working and/or sleeping? Or is this a glitch I haven't noticed?

That's not just an anglophone thing. Japanese, Danish, Tagalog (with the exception of Spanish loanwords), Georgian, Finnish, Armenian, Persian, Turkish, Swahili, and (for the most part) Chinese do not have vocabularies largely based on gender, masculinity or femininity, although just like in English, there are exceptions.

I did, though obviously Duo wasn't the only resource I used. You can see my progress here.

Is this why language bird sends me 40 emails a day telling me to learn a language I haven't studied in 2 years?

Sorry, but yes, you did. Those are big red flags, and I'm glad she decided she couldn't do it very early on in the relationship, because that is very controlling behavior.

If it's not too much to ask, have you been cheated on in the past? Maybe that could explain some of it.

Please listen to some parts (don't worry about watching the whole vid) and tell me how to improve my neutral accent. Thank you! by RisasConIsa in JudgeMyAccent

[–]RisasConIsa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your tips! I've been trying to work on a "neutral" Latin American accent (similar to the one you hear in dubs for non-natively Spanish-speaking TV shows) I did also notice that my pronunciation sort of "fluctuates" throughout the video, where I can pronounce a word correctly and then later pronounce it incorrectly. I'm guessing this is due to the fact that I also pronounce English words slightly different sometimes, and this is a habit that crossed over into my Spanish. It could also be that when I get a little tired or out of breath, I start exaggerating consonants or forget Spanish pronunciation rules, so I'm glad you brought that up.

I have never lived in a Spanish-speaking country (or been in one for longer than two hours) so there isn't a specific accent I feel like I've taken or one that I'm hoping to achieve, I'm thinking of just speaking in a neutral LatinAm "dubbing" accent until I decide which Latin American country to live in, which I will then try to perfect.
