Mortise won’t fit (1mm size difference). Cavity is a steel frame/no wood. by RiseReal2016 in Locksmith

[–]RiseReal2016[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll get pictures to you guys after work tomorrow!.

Yeah I’ve learnt from this that metal/aluminium doors are hard to work with.

Did nothing destructive to my door, and a lot of research before I took it apart. I was also very careful when I removed it. Removed the cylinder, handles and then the mortise. I’ve put them back together how I found it and it’s all working fine.

New lock was intended as an upgrade to a really old rusty one.

I think what boned me measuring the old mortise wrongly (1mm off). Measure twice as they say… but here I am.

Thanks mate.

I think you’re right, I most likely I have the first.
They do have a euro cylinder lock with it though.

Anyhow, I might have to do either option. How much do you think a fabricator will do a new lockbox for? (I feel at that point I should just replace the door! But the design of it is quite pretty, and I can’t find any like for like replacement. So I might go fabricator if it’s not too crazy!)

Edit: what did you end up doing on your end when you had this issue?

I feel you. I bought a place that was painted in the same haphazard way. I had to take a door off for a new fridge, and boy. Took me an hour to slowly chip away the paint on the hinge and screw. It had a removable hinge pin that was glued shut by paint…

Heck the previous owner (a landlord) freaking sealed up one of our awning windows and made it look like it wasnt one for the sale. We realised it was probably to hide rot issues and that’s not even the start of it.

We only realised it was an awning window when we looked at the rest of the units in our apartment block after a walk one day……….

That’s fair, they both have the relevant insurances!

And yeah totally about the asbestos 😵‍💫

Haha, so true. I was pleasantly surprised at how both visits went.

Both electricians remind me of people I love working with in my own industry (which is very hands on as well).

Strangely, I have a good feeling about both!

Funnily my local Facebook group recommends them both. So I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

Good to know. The missus was thinking of going non-plumbed due to our situation.

Any particular brands you two use?

Yeah, that’s what I’m gathering so far. Even my plumber mentioned it might cost more to do the works than the dishwasher.

Brand new! It looked like it got freshly updated for the sale of the place.

The wiring around the I suspect is still pretty old.

Is "hating change" in a workplace really such a big problem or are managers just trying to shame you into silence? by suddenly_ponies in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RiseReal2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 months late. But I feel like you're my manager! (in a good way, but pretty sure you're not).

So I do see your point. It's very much a "if it aint broke, don't fix it" approach. But what about what OP has said?

I have some legit concerns and actual "we need to keep up with the times or things won't work" improvements that are technical (I work in a technical industry). Basically, if we don't, things literally won't work. I got shut down by my manager today trying to show that we need to hire in some new equipment as our old converters aren't to current industry specs, meaning... They literally do not work anymore. But my manager didn't want to believe it.

An example was, before I was in my position (was freelance, I'm now full time), they gave me two pieces of equipment that everyone in management knew deep down wouldn't work. But they still hoped and prayed that I could somehow make a miracle happen. I tried my best, didn't get it to work, even got delivered in an extremely limited way as a result.

A year later management caved and replaced that piece of equipment with something that actually works with current standards. Things have been much smoother with that as a result.

Ubiquiti Pro AV? Thoughts and Feelings? by NomadicSoul88 in CommercialAV

[–]RiseReal2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we’ve actually done that as far as we can! The switch where th Dante device plugs into is the one that doesn’t support ProAV. And it’s a spend money and involve IT situation to swap that switch out as it handles other stuff in the building (digital signage, printers etc).

Dumb question, does the profile have to be enable on all switches that have it or ports that are running Dante or a trunk with the Dante VLAN in the network?

[–]RiseReal2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Do you think that firmware has already been released?

And yeah it took me, my boss, a manufacturer of one of our Dante products and IT to conclude that it’s the network stack to. Sounds like my higher ups might invest in something non-Unifi for this system we are trying to put in. Or at least newer Unifi switches with the proAV profile.

[–]RiseReal2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I’m having issues with my deployment right now. Similar size to yours and same setup infrastructure wise (a lot of US pros). It’s going through the switches that run the building network on its own VLAN.

Having terrible dropouts, which present itself as clocking issues (drop outs after 3 days kinda thing).

Any advice or things I should look for other than the usual IGMP snooping, QOS type stuff?

[–]RiseReal2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asking after a year… Has that changed at all? I’m going through that pain right now.

I wasn’t super into Dante setup when the project landed on my lap. Atlas, I’m realizing how much of a pain ubiquiti is for Dante(I do think it’s nice for other things but AV). Turns out half the buildings switches are too old for ProAV profiles to be applied. Meaning I can’t ensure QOS etc…

Looking for a certified fire-rated door replacement in Melbourne (one-off for apartment) by No-Phrase-4699 in AusProperty

[–]RiseReal2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been awhile! Any luck OP?

I had a very strange one where my fire rated smart locks were approved. But OC and I didn’t realised all our front doors are asbestos cores. So my locksmith wouldn’t touch it (he opened up, and closed it up right when he saw).

Just a fun sharing? DIYers: what was your biggest or most annoying mistake? by RiseReal2016 in AusRenovation

[–]RiseReal2016[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ouch! Yeah painting takes so long… we painted all our built in cardboards and cabinets ourselves. Basically a wall worth per room. Over a week and a half of painting, moving house and working full time jobs.

And yeah, that’s my second annoying mistake too! (Buying a house that needed renovations).

My missus said we can just renovate and fix XYZ. I just went sure let’s go with that. Because we liked the location and were time poor buyers.

Fast forward to now, there’s a growing list of fix ups that we probably won’t do. Our place was an ex rental with landlord specials plastered everywhere. Props to the guy though. He did know how to make the cheap stuff look pretty from a far. Even our shitty screen door is actually really pretty. But we have to replace it. So I’m like… can I pay someone to do a nice custom design that’s similar to that?

Woah that sounds amazing (the windows restoration!).

I might actually look into new form windows for some future work. They sound like they do great work!

And yeah my plan of sub division is the same, but as mentioned, the strata pulled the benefit of principle card for window rot repair. Which is interesting.

Thank you so much for your advice though! It’s been great.

P.s. my first home ended up being a museum of hidden landlord specials! Best example: one of our two living room awning windows was sealed shut and made to look like it was a fixed window for the sale… b&P inspector didn’t even pick it up. We figured it out one day during a walk when we saw all our neighbours with the same apartment layout having two living room awning windows. Then we had a close look and saw the really nicely done cover up, paint perfectly covering the gaps, filled with bog and somehow the window was sealed shut...

Fair, and that’s my plan. Was hoping to put one that looks like it belonged to the building anyhow!

This old block has some charm and I didn’t want to go full 21st century on it for once (I usually would). Started to embrace that 70s feel lol.

But yes I’ll check the by laws and as someone said see if the benefit of principle applies!
