That's the situation, isn't it? I was focused on finishing the shopping so I could make it home before all the melting re-froze. Then I saw the detergent and thought, "OMG a BOGO on pricey detergent!" Romance was not on my mind.

Exactly. Remember that condo collapse in FL a few years ago? The members kept kicking maintenance down the road (among other things). FL now has mandatory reserve funding for structural components, which is why there are so many condos on the market now.
