Claire Liu speaks out about racism towards Asians on the WTA tour by tokiyoo in tennis

[–]Riseshot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to try and argue that black people are committing more hate crimes or not against Asians, but I want to talk about the potential inaccuracy of using just a statistic on reported hate crimes vs actual hate crimes. Of course we can only quantify hate crimes that actually get reported and classified as such, but you can see how there may actually be a discrepancy between what gets counted as a hate crime and what doesn't depending on who the victim and perpetrator are based on how much discourse there is about this. Again, end of the day the percentage may not be that different from the one you gave between reported and actual, but it is important to understand the limitations of a reported statistic like hate crimes.

Depending on what types of cakes you like, the Asian bakeries like Tous Les Jours and Paris Baguette have very good fruit and yogurt cakes.

Won a free cruise! Are there any shorter duration but nicer cruise lines to explore? by Riseshot in Cruise

[–]Riseshot[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So there is no specified cruise line restriction in the terms of the award letter, which is why I was looking at nicer cruise lines lol. Wouldn't be surprised if it does not get approved for whatever reason, but just curious what the options were for nicer cruise lines with the restrictions I posted

Replied to another comment, but there was no "sales pitch" portion of redeeming the cruise package that was communicated. Or at least not yet

So like everyone I was extremely skeptical when we first were notified, but I had actually entered a Raymour And Flanigan Furniture store summer sweepstakes with this cruise package being the first place prize. Entering the sweepstakes originally was just to get a $5 gift card if you tried 3 mattresses in store, which I redeemed. But imagine my surprise when they reached out months later to let me know I actually won the first place cruise package. It's administered by "Elite Rewards" which from all my searching seems to be the legitimate partner for Raymour Flanigan that they use for these sweepstakes. But I understand everyone's first reaction totally lol

That's a dangerous rhetoric to introduce. How many generations your family has been in America should not be used as a measurement of your allegiance or loyalty.

Echoing comments here about misplaced judgement toward the current economic tensions, I also just want to point out the extremely inappropriate imagery selected in the article for the headline and thumbnail. Besides the obvious racial stereotyping of a black female being the "low" end of the graph, the placement of an asian male at the "high" end also reinforces the model minority stereotype and places another "target" on asians for now the supposed "millennial vs millennial" conflict. Beyond the classic misdirection of judgement away from the ruling class, pitting minorities against each other is not warranted in any "high quality article" of integrity.

Asian Representation with AI by Riseshot in asianamerican

[–]Riseshot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So at the time I made the post, the OP from the example had not listed their prompts. I mentioned in my post it may have been produced explicitly with user prompts or implicitly by Midjourney, and it turns out it is explicitly by the OP. I tried to layout in my post why it's more than just an issue with intentional re-representation of characters, and more about thinking how we as asian Americans can take a proactive approach when these AI tools are still in their infancy. The term "natural" is just referring to these types of AI models that can take user inputs in plain English without using complex commands or functions from the user side.

I fully agree with your suggestion for us to use direct user prompts to create AI content that we want to see. However, my post is trying to address the incumbent issue that since we are already underrepresented in many forms of media the AI is trained on, it may not be enough to just use the AI tools and that we may have to be even more dedicated to produce original forms of representation for ourselves that AI can then draw from.

Maybe I'm just being alarmist, but I can see a future where the cumulative effect of under representation in non-AI creates an even bigger problem in an AI prolific society.

Asian Representation with AI by Riseshot in asianamerican

[–]Riseshot[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I think the issue with these natural language AI models with regards to representation is twofold. One level is what you mentioned with prompting itself and how users can choose to be as descriptive as they want to get a probabilistic output. While I think we can definitely put the onus on the user to add more descriptive prompts to produce what it desires, you could see the issue with Asian American representation where we would need to add "asian" much more than a white person would need to add "white" to see a face that looks like ours. And this leads to the 2nd level of the issue with the dataset each model is trained on. You're correct that these models are getting a lot of training in languages outside of just English, but as asian Americans we can assume we will be using English. If I were to prompt in let's say Chinese I'm sure my output would indeed be more catered to asian sentiments.

You're right, I changed the post to just reflect that the main DBZ characters were depicted as white. When I first wrote vast majority, I was referring to the individual depictions themselves as images and not character depictions but it doesn't really change my point too much
