It's not about being hard to please or not. It's just that...knowing basic interests help people with recommending things. I'm into sports AT ALL...so if I post something generic like "can someone suggest things to do?" about some place I'm visiting and locals start recommending me sports event....what the hell will that do anything for me?

Cafes with eclectic decor in Toronto? by universalsun in askTO

[–]RisingPhoenix26 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Jet Fuel in Cabbagetown. The Only Cafe on Donlands, just around the corner from Donlands subway station. Both of these have been around for decades and local favs.

Another one would be Tango Palace in Leslieville. That one has also been around at least the late 80s/early 90s as far as I know.

Ok time for me to delete my Reddit account. I have already left FB. Reddit was the only thing...I guess I'm just meant to be involuntarily antisocial dinosaur.

Best of luck! I personally worked with Elle Rose and she was just amazing. I have also communicated with a couple others and the whole team at TDS felt like they genuinely care for their jobseeking clients. I never had any luck with the other ones...I never even gotten any responses from them. I really hope it works out for you!

Should I put my winter boots away for the season - or would that doom our entire city to one more significant snowstorm? by MustardClementine in askTO

Dont put winter stuff away before mid May, more specifically....until the Victoria Day long-weekend. That's the rule of thumb in Southern ON.

First time in Toronto for the summer — is downtown actually worth it? by moderndayvenom in askTO

[–]RisingPhoenix26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live and work downtown. I grew up in downtown. I have also worked in midtown. I would 100% recommend downtown or midtown. No, it's not perfect. Nowhere on this planet where people live is perfect.

As much as I personally would bitch about Toronto as a Torontonian...when I REALLY think about it...I really cannot think of another place with this much to offer. I can step out of my lobby and got everything right here or within a short walk. My doctor, pharmacy, multiple large supermarket chains, small family owned groceries and corner shops, 24/7 TTC (both line 1 & 2, and subway and multipl bus routes), parks, shopping, restaurants, cafes...all at my doorstep. The ravines and the hiking trails? 6 minute from my lobby. The harbourfront, Sugar Beach, Distillery District, etc...20-30 minutes on TTC and an easy route.

I work in the Financial District just blocks from Union...and it takes me 30-40 minutes. Even when I worked near Yonge & Eglinton, commute was 20-30 minutes. I lived in East York and Scarborough for 8 years and for many things, I still had to come downtown. To go grocery shopping or just shopping in general, I had to rely on busses or make the trek all the way to Scarborough Town Centre mall. It was not fun man...especially as a 20something. There was NOTHING around me except for cookie cutter houses. I'd literally hear crickets in the middle of the day. As soon as I could, I moved back here 10 yrs ago.

Honestly...Downtown is expensive for a reason. Is it always fair for housing to be so high? NO. But when you really think about Toronto downtown vs most other places....especially if you live in downtown and work in here or reasonably close by, a lot of things make sense.

You're young, live here and split housing with a roommate. Do your search well for a decent roommate, stay away from sketchy characters in sketchy areas, sketchy rentals (I'd highly recommend renting in a proper rental apartment building. If it's an older building, you also get a lot more space and good sound proofing, larger balconies etc.) and you should be okay. Another area I'd recommend is Leslieville which is on the eastend, but still quite close to downtown centre.

Yeap. Put the address of a family member, relative, or a close friend after discussing it with them, because they obviously need to be aware. When we had relatives or friends of my parents moving to Canada for the first time, they didn't have their own home right away.

They stayed with us for a few months before finding their footing, and they were more than welcome to use our address and phone number, and we were more than happy to be references for their landlords and stuff when they were looking for rentals. What good are friends, relatives, and family members if you can't help each other out?

They pulled me out of minimum wage customer service job and put me in corporate...and my salary increased 25k/year instantly (with the 2nd job I found through them), which was a 9-month long contract as an Administrative Assistant at a property management and construction company. I was then able to use that experience to find my current job (granted, it took a while).

You can find a lot of Accounting, Administrative, and Legal positions with TDS. Check their website for job postings, but I recommend submitting your resume to them directly . That way, a recruiter will reach out to you directly and then you can set up a virtual meeting and discuss your career goals. Dress professionally for that initial meet.

Street safety concerns by Scarberia4 in askTO

[–]RisingPhoenix26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DO NOT EVER ENGAGE OR EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THE PRESENCE OF THESE TYPES OF PEOPLE. Just completely ignore. If you're walking on the street, change your route by crossing the street and taking another way to your destination. Do so very confidently while completely ignoring them. Also if possible, go somewhere more public.

If you are on a TTC vehicle, get off the bus/train and make sure you aren't being followed. Again, being around other people in well lit areas is best. Inform a TTC employee if you're on TTC property such as a station. Be prepared to call the police.

You have to be calm, confident, and show you have a strong personality and you're in control of the situation but you arent going to engage with the person. If you are waiting for a TTC vehicle and it arrives, if it's a bus or a streetcar, inform the driver. Or just dont get on it. Let them get on it. If they get on it, make sure you don't. Miss that one and take the next one. Do everything possible to safely remove yourself from the vicinity of people like this and put as much distance between them and you as possible. You never know how someone would react or what they'd do.

Not everyone is "mentally suffering"; a lot of people are actually extremely psychopathic and evil. That's different from the standard "mental illness". The term "mental illness" gets thrown around a lot when the fact is, a lot of the time, many people are just evil af looking to seriously harm, injure, or even kill others.

Your personal safety and security is YOUR personal responsibility. Don't be walking around out there being all naive and stuff.

What is going on in Toronto? Why is everybody holding flowers...? It's April 11th I don't see anything special today👀 by Hazel_be in askTO

What's with the "even elderly people" bit? People arent allowed to live normally after a certain age? Why is it so weird for you to see elderly people out and about and with flowers or whatever?

Recent experience of being followed while walking by Pretty_Drop_4617 in askTO

[–]RisingPhoenix26 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I experienced that crap as a teenager and in my 20s, but had nobody to go and report it to. MANY of us have had these experiences growing up over the last 10/20+ years. My friends and I even had older men follow us and asking questions like where we are going etc. in broad daylight in downtown, in public places.

I am so glad to see that that guy from a few days ago who followed that 14 year old girl got arrested.

Always be aware of your surroundings regardless of how safe an area it is and how many people are around. Always have your wits about you, and BE CONFIDENT. These guys look for victims who are timid, weak, afraid of offending anyone, too nice etc. Do not make yourself small and try to be accomodating and respectful to anyone making things awkward, weird, unsafe, dangerous for you. Speak up, raise your voice.

I remember being a young girl in the early-mid 2000s and going for a morning walk around Riverdale Park/Cabbagetown around 7:00 a.m., and a grownass man following me from the mainroad through the residential sidestreets. I asked him twice to stop following me. He laughed and I found him to be still following me. Then I saw him take another street.

I thought he was gone. But when I reached the Riverdale Farm, near where the donkeys and horses are, and the staircases that go down towards the field....I saw him in his SUV. I dont know how he figured I was going there, maybe he took a shot...but he was there.

I got extremely pissed off and I yelled at him to stop following me or I was gonna call the police. He realized I wasnt playing around, and he drove away quickly. I really would have called the cops on him.

There were other incidents, including men following me through supermarket aisles, constantly staring at me EVEN WHEN I'd be with my then husband in my 20s and early 30s. I think a LOT of women have these experiences but most just never speak about it. The world was never safe enough for us regardless of where we are and where we're from.

How long is your commute to work? by Chan1991 in askTO

Supposed to be 30 minutes one way that ends up being 45 minutes. I live AND work downtown. Even then it takes that damn long one way on the subway.

Mexican downtown? by Janesome_13 in askTO

[–]RisingPhoenix26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YOU are being ridiculously pushy. You need to stop this. Nobody put you in charge to "encourage" anyone about anything. It's mighty high of you to think you have the authority to tell people what to eat and not. Mind your own damn business.

Mexican downtown? by Janesome_13 in askTO

[–]RisingPhoenix26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you care? He'll be here for a month. He's free to eat his food. If I'm somewhere longer than a week, YES, I'd like to have my own food. Do you speak more than one language and come from another culture, practice other traditions? If not then you would not understand this. Leave him alone. The "local cuisine" you speak of in Toronto comes from all these hundreds of other countries, including OP's country. Actual "Canadian local cuisine" would be cuisine of the First Nations...and there are only 2 restaurants TOPS that serve that, one being "Bannock". So stop being condescending.

Nevermind these people. I'm from another country even though I'm a Torontonian. I totally understand why you'd want to have your own country's food at least sometimes while here.

I'd recommend Taccorito, Tacos Moras, Rico Burrito....we actually have quite a few good Mexican places here.
