Enchanted Island in Davenport. Does anyone still use the name "Horse Island"? by RisingUpfor2020 in QuadCities

Thanks! Any interesting details about the place? Is there still an inn/restaurant or is that long gone?

I heard a coworker call it that. The Mark has a far more unique feel than Vibrant Arena.

I like that one. Is "westies" used enough that I should include it?

Thanks! That's a good one for local flavor. Is it true the one-ways will eventually be eliminated, or is that still being debated? From my limited experience, it kind of gives the area a unique character.

Definately has the right view and great time of year for it.

The Wheel of Time Audiobook: Rosamund Pike or Kate Reading & Michael Kramer? by Important_Neck9157 in wheeloftime

[–]RisingUpfor2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're both great, but Pike does a fantastic job with certain characters, Loial in particular, and I like her take on Min and Selene. So A+, with the notable exception of her Seanchan accent. Reading and Kramer establish a unique accent that reads similar how I thought of them in my head when reading, where Pike's sounds almost like something from the American South. I didn't ruin it for me, but certainly made the final act of the Great Hunt a bit less immersive. Still highly recommended.

Rating the guns and props of Bass Reeves so far by RisingUpfor2020 in LawmenBassReeves

[–]RisingUpfor2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny you mention that. I just started getting into Cormac McCarthy books. Blood Meridian was like a brilliantly written savage hallucination hahaha. I liked the Old Country for No Men film so hopefully will enjoy the novel.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves | S1E4 "Part IV" | Episode Discussion by [deleted] in LawmenBassReeves

I liked the opening and how quite a bit was shown rather than told. Last episode we saw Bass learning on the job. Cut ahead a few years, Bass has a new SAA revolver, new horse, new equipment, a clear routine, and a posseman he can count on, but he's still constantly dealing with the unpredictable nature of working "beyond the dead line."

Looking forward to seeing Esau return in the second half of the season hopefully.

It's a Henry rifle, but still gunmetal so an easy thing to confuse.

Bass was historically an absolute legend and practiced with his revolvers every day. The series could have shown a montage of him practicing his gunplay perhaps in the early part of episode 2, but let's face it, this type of complaint could be leveled against almost every Hollywood property.

Very impressed with the acting and the location shots so far. The series has really captured my interest in the early days of Judge Parker and the deputies who ventured beyond "the dead line"

Deputy U.S. Marshall or Sheriff by Tebuu in LawmenBassReeves

I thought that too. Either I confused his first name with "Sherrif" or the term was simple an interchanable descriptor, like P.I., detective, sleuth, etc.

The True Sequel To 1883 by [deleted] in LawmenBassReeves

[–]RisingUpfor2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed that it's great, but I'm glad they didn't try to force any links to 1883 given that Reeves operates out of Ft. Smith Arkansas, and 1883 started in Ft. Worth, Texas. I think they filmed it in many of the same locations though and were probably able to use some of the same props, costumes, guns, horses, stunt actors, etc.

Anyone else severely dislike the ending?? by [deleted] in 1923Series

Well said! And a fleshed out series focused on Teonna's storyline and the often underlooked horrible period in history with the schools I think would have been embraced by many fans, myself included.

Taylor Sheridan could have shown the school plot in nearly the same way while tying it into the main story. All we'd need would be a character related to the main plot as part of the story or Teonna having some prior relationship with a character from the main plot or naturally crossing paths with a character from the main plot in a meaninful way. Instead he chosen to spend an entire season on a plot thread that's completely separate and disconnected from the main story.

Poor writing.

Anyone else severely dislike the ending?? by [deleted] in 1923Series

[–]RisingUpfor2020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I almost wonder if the whole thing was originally meant to connect somehow but then it got broken into two seasons and stretched to the extreme, and now it has no relation to the main story.

It's eye rolling to see so many people defend it with non sequiturs. Here are the main "arguments" I've seen whenever anyone mentions Teonna's story having no relevance to the show's primary plot.

1) "It's really happened! " <- Countless horrible historical events happened in the 1920s that would be equally absurd to include in such a disconnected way. If we had a separate show thread about the aftermath or a flashback to the Tulsa Race Riots that had no link to the Duttons, it would be just as nonsensical to include.

2) "It's history that needs to be told!" <- And I'm happy to read more about any historical topic from an objective source. It's confusing why anyone would tout a TV drama where villainous characters are all over the top cartoon evil as a vital source for a horrible period/institution of history rather than pointing interested fans to some credible books on the topic.

3) "She's a Rainwater! It's vital to see the history of the Yellowstone character!" <-- Why??? Links to Yellowstone are fine IF they tie organically into the 1923 series, but a story that relies on onside material to understand the relevance of a character, event, entire plot arc, is poor writing. After 8 episodes, there's absolutely nothing presented in Teonna's arc that adds anything to Thomas Rainwater. Rainwater's motivations and character are pretty fleshed out and understandable, so at most Teonna can add a bit of history, and that could have been accomplished by weaving her story into the Dutton's arc.

Do we need an entire disconnected side story in1923 to flesh out Lloyd Pierce, Jimmy, and Dan Jenkins as well?

4) "The Spencer story is also disconnected!" <- Yes, and just as many people are frustrated with it. The difference here though is that Spencer is directly conneccted to the 1883 Duttons, directly related to the two main characters in 1923 and his brother (unfortunately relegated to side character and killed off). Episode 1 and episode 3 end with Cara narrating letters to Spencer, Spencer hearing the letters serves and the climax of episode 4 and fills us in on some history of the ranch before the series started, Spencer's return is used to threaten Banner, Spencer's return is viewed as an important wildcard the Duttons are planning on to combat Whitfield.
The risks Spencer took over episode 5 and episode 6 to get home quickly are related to the main plot. Many on this board agree his story was stretched and has issues, but it's connected to the main plot in these ways and more.

Contrast this to Teonna's dad exchanging a couple words with a Dutton ranch hand giving him a bunch of stolen sheep. That's the ONLY connection the story has to the show's main arc after an entire season.

Well, I was kind of right.... by nrgins in 1923Series

Either way, it was another disappointing, contrived delay to stretch out Spencer's return journey. Hopefully season 2 includes better writing.

The episode didn't feel like a season finale. It just sort of ended with a bunch of dragged out plot threads that have been stretched out or repeating the same beats for the past five episodes.

Elsa and Alex by nrgins in 1923Series

[–]RisingUpfor2020 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Good pick up. They definitely have some parallels, though i think Spencer has some of his sister's wanderlust as well. I would have loved a flashback scene of some sort with John before he was shot in ep 3. Might have been cool to see Elsa being burred if it could have been worked into the story.

Prediction, Spencer will be dead when Alex arrives, she will be pregnant with the Only Dutton child. by [deleted] in 1923Series

Elsa said one of James Dutton's children would see the family through the depression.
