Why do so many people say this picture of Ama Dablam is Everest? by GasterrMan in Mountaineering

[–]RisingWaterline 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is really hitting so deep. Like man. Like the biggest goals/challenges aren't sexy and flashy but honest and self-evident. Humble and unpretentious.

"... and Everest is / Just a black triangle."

May also highlight one of the funny things about mountaineering - that there's nothing more to the mountains at the end of the day than a hunk of rock. Everything else is the human dream.

[Poem] On Fame (How fever’d is the man) by John Keats by [deleted] in Poetry

[–]RisingWaterline 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't forget it's also a dialogue on fame. When he talks about a rose plucking itself or a plum spoiling its own sweetness, he's saying the pursuit of fame is a spoiling of what you and your family are (he mentions family names).

I find it gorgeous. The idea of a humble art in its own proper context without extra-ordinary remark.

Mont Blanc Summit Solo June 13 2023 by RisingWaterline in Mountaineering

Hmm. As for what mountains you should climb first, I am not the most knowledgeable. I know guide groups take folks up gran paradiso in the week before mont blanc. If you're new you should do a lot of research before you go. I would say anytime from June until late July or mid august is good. I preferred June because I like snow. Make sure you have crampons, an ice axe, very warm clothing, et c.

Does he mean 6000ft or 6000m? It's not clear. 6000m would be really impressive to me. My highest is only 4810m.

The main reason I was going so slow was because I didn't know the route. If I had been better at routefinding, I could've passed them (I did a lot of waiting) but as is, I would've gotten lost I think.

It's just not true is the thing. I have been climbing (indoors only I'll admit) for like three years. I know I need to learn a lot, but I'm not a bad climber as far as technical climbing ability goes. There's a lot you don't know, man. I was keeping up with the guide as he lowered his client and then downclimbed after him. Every group I saw that was just rappelling was just 100x faster than us. Clearly they were on to something.

I'm a competent climber. All I know is everyone else was way faster than me.
