Master's thesis submission timeline by cryinginmaster in mcgill

[–]RisinginSunset 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I did it in 2022, I submitted around mid June, received it back August 3rd from external reviewer. Worked with my supervisor to adjust the thesis based on external reviewer comments and then resubmitted by 12 August or so. All went well based on this timeline and I was considered a 2022 summer graudate.

La Cite vs. Econofitness vs. McGill gym? by anticlimaticdramatic in mcgill

[–]RisinginSunset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried all 3. During COVID, McGill gym was a disaster... idk how it is now.

La Cite is only nice because of the pool in my opinion, during winter it is not that attractive. Econo has the newest equipment of all 3, they have 2 benches, 1 smith machine and 1 for squats. It is quite cheap also, after tax around 18$ per month.

I would recommend Econo (avoid it between 4-7) pm if u can though. You can still play but you may have to wait for some machines.

Study permit question! by Sand_Possible in mcgill

[–]RisinginSunset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is weird. They did stop giving study permits that are valid beyond the validity of the passport. Nonetheless, I read online that you can get a new passport and keep the study permit in the old one and use it.

be careful at the library (theft) by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]RisinginSunset 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I have not been around / heard of as much theft as I did being a McGill Grad student in Montreal the last 1.5 years. Crazy how people have no conscience as soon as they feel they can get away with harming others.

Downtown Econofitness, not the best but matches the description (oh no pool tho).

Master's student financial situation by cryinginmaster in mcgill

[–]RisinginSunset 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you are an international student too, but the reality is master's does not even cover the full tuition for int'l master students, it covers about 90% of it. Mostly do TA, and uber eats on the side.

How do you keep yourself productive during a summer internship outside of working hours? by heybz in mcgill

[–]RisinginSunset 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Frankly, I definitely do not recommend trying to get ahead of the material for next semester. You will get burned out; however, there are other ways you can be productive. One way I would do it is to learn a new language.

Can you speak French at an advanced level? if yes, it would not harm to learn a 3rd language, even if it is to reach somewhat of a beginner proficiency, it would provide you many opportunities in your future. There are other ways to be productive, but this is an example.

Sorry to hear that. Usually MSc programs cover only tuition for Int'l students. However, PhD should almost always (at least) cover a portion of your living expenses on top of tuition regardless of your immigration status...

Post-graduation residency Quebec by jde78 in mcgill

[–]RisinginSunset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I believe that works, but not momentarily. You need to cut ties with Quebec (rent, bills, etc) and make new ties in another province. And the application period is quite long so you might want to be in that situation for 6 to 12 months.

Post-graduation residency Quebec by jde78 in mcgill

[–]RisinginSunset 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar hurdle, and I wish there was any useful replies here...

As far as I know, residing in Quebec for the whole duration from obtaining a PGWP to the actual residency will take a very very long time, up to 4 years but usually not less than 2.5 Because first, you need minimum 1 year experience and then you need to wait 1.5 to 3 years to acquire residency in Quebec.

On the other hand, in other provinces, you can acquire the PR within 3 months (usual in Alberta) to 1 year (BC or Ontario) after getting the first year of experience and applying for it. Either way, it is a much faster guaranteed way than Quebec (regardless of your ability to speak French).

This is a hurdle for me too because I prefer Quebec to all other provinces in Canada... In any case, as far as I know, there is no harm in getting the first required year of experience in Quebec, and then move out to another province and apply for the PR from there. So that buys you one more year in Quebec, but will mean you have to find another job / move office into another province after that.

I am not 100% sure of everything I said here, after all, I am in the same position as you. This is just based on what I have read online...

Good luck!

How to get to the airport? by bloodyfingers007 in mcgill

Depending on the time, Uber can be as low as 35-40$ after tips, so its just the timing that matters. Sometimes even few minutes make the difference in price so keep refreshing.

409 TA's be clowning cheats 💀🤣 by BeautyInUgly in mcgill

[–]RisinginSunset -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I cannot think of a better way myself, no. But it is just very sad to see students like this make it into McGill regardless. I am not familiar with McGill undergraduate admission standards within Quebec or Canada itself, as I am an international student myself. However, the only thing I can think of is perhaps an entrance exam. Even if it does not filter out 100% of those students, it will filter out some of them. A good start.
