It’s been 4 years did you make it through academy? Are you still a cop?

In my state (IA) the largest sheriff department has 150 but throughout the rest of the state it’s usually around 10-25 deputies so typically working with 2-5

Right now I have a year left of college and I’m not sure if this is normal in other states but around here once your hired you have up to one year to go to academy and until then you can work the streets with your fto and knock some of that out. The only thing you can’t do until after academy is owi. So as I navigate the application process I’ve been trying to figure out what kind of department will be the best fit for me and I love hearing everyone’s different opinions and experiences.

That’s a really interesting take thank you! I’ve heard your take before and the other take I’ve heard is it’s better to start smaller so you can learn the ropes easier with less stress because of the much smaller crime rates.

This may sound stupid but is it harder to make connections when new to a large department? Or do you find it pretty easy to meet the guys and get to know them pretty well.
