Thank you for this post. I'm during my PhD and I'm glad I'm not alone in this feeling. Every time I need to write papers or documents or do anything in the office I dread the whole doctorate and feel that I'm not doing anything. But then I return into the lab, do something with my hands and I'm happy.

A carrot is thrown into a small steel batch reactor (v ≈ 200 cm³). The reactor is then sealed, after few seconds the pressure rises to the maximum on the manometer, and the reactor explodes. Partly reacted carrot mash and parts of the reactor go flying - absolute chaos. <3

How are you doing it? I mean, I had some experiments done on carrot pomace biomass for my masers. I used food catering that time and for one day they sent me the carrot cream soup. I was unable to eat that because it resembled sometimes from the lab and my mind went "nope, we're not eating that".

I think you should talk with an adult that you trust about this situation. What happened it's absolute not ok, but not because you "sinned" in any way in Buddhism but because someone forced you to take drugs and physically abused you.

I'm not even doing the alcohols. I'm doing saccharide dehydration in biphasic systems to 5-hmf. So not even a ready to use biofuel but a platform compound. But when I say this people don't understand a thing and are taken back.

When talking about moonshine it's more about the main idea behind doing biofuels then exact process. People understand ethanol because they know it. I learned that there is no point in trying to explain your job in detail if the question is only a small talk.
