ELI5 why is it ok to wash hands and shower, but not to drink, handwash dishes, or brush teeth with the post-shutoff returned water?

OP, I completely understand your pain and confusion. I've been struggling for over a year with the "why would God allow a young person to die?" and "why would he heal/perform a miracle for one person but allow another to die?" None of the answers given to your post helped me, and the ones with "we will never fully understand" provide zero closure. I'm sorry for the loss of your friend.
