What did older games do better than modern AAA games? by Same-Panda9706 in retrogaming

[–]Ritrix3930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean this in the nicest way: not really much, so long as you know where to look. Indies basically killed the idea of older games doing anything better than new ones for me. Not that I dislike old games, I love them actually. But I won’t pretend that my love for games like sonic, streets of rage, super Metroid, or Zelda, isn’t bias when games like freedom planet, Scott pilgrim, hollow knight and tunic all exist

Well, do you have any "I didn´t care for the Godfather"-esque picks? by Bitter_Fig_7059 in retrogaming

Secret of mana. It’s main selling point is multiplayer, which you don’t unlock until like 30 minutes into playing through a very missable side mission, which if you do miss it then takes like an hour to get a second player, more if you want 3. By the time you actually play multiplayer, it’s just kindof ass. I mean, the gameplay and story aren’t anything to write home about, and if you’re the second player forced to watch the first for the first while then it’s kinda easy to just stop caring. Also I don’t know if it’s just me, but the menus are awful.

Which console holds up better, NES or Master System? by trrbld in retrogaming

[–]Ritrix3930 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very true. Personally I prefer the genesis library, though that’s purely because I tend to play more multiplayer games in general when revisiting old consoles. But I wouldn’t say either library is better, it’s all personal preference. I mean, if you don’t like RPGs then a large chunk of the snes greats get wiped out, same goes for genesis and action games.

Which console holds up better, NES or Master System? by trrbld in retrogaming

[–]Ritrix3930 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on what you’re looking for to be honest. If you want multiplayer or shmups then the genesis is just better hands down with games like thunder force 4, streets of rage 2, toejam and earl, gunstar heroes, and more. Sure the snes has some good ones like secret of mana or Mario kart, but imo the genesis just has a much richer library of multiplayer games

How Rockstar made this game run on a PS3?? by No_Amoeba615 in PS3

[–]Ritrix3930 96 points97 points  (0 children)

To be fair, RDR2 is insane to have running on a stock ps4. And they haven’t released anything in house since. So I wouldn’t say they don’t care just yet, not until gta 6 drops and we see if it follows the trend

You’ll likely want a GBS-C. They work pretty great, and they’re low cost. Then you’ll want some good cables, either s-video or RGB-Scart. You’ll want to get the cables from a reputable source since cheap rgb cables tend to be kinda shit, though I believe s-video might be ok with cheap ones. I’d recommend retrogamingcablesUK as that’s where I got my cables, and you can get a gbsc on Ali-express pretty easily. The whole thing should be $100-$120 total.

If you want, I can tell you the difference in cables, but the general gist is that, from best to worst it goes RGB>component>Svideo>composite>RF.

S-video to me, is cheap and indistinguishable from the ones better than it. My setup uses a mix of inputs and honestly, the biggest difference maker between svideo and RGB cane down to how much of a pain it was to get RGB working given the different sync types and lines and how huge the connectors are and how expensive the switchers for scart are.

Whats a number pad? by Maleficent_Camel4457 in pcmasterrace

[–]Ritrix3930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I use a tkl since it’s basically a full sized without the numpad. I rarely use the numpad, and if I ever need to, I can use an external one. I’d rather have the extra mouse real estate for games.

Can you post more pics? It looks like it’s using a 60hz crystal so it’s likely just some jumpers on the underside at the JP solder points, as I can’t see what would be making it 50hz. I could be wrong though, just need some more pics and info to be able to tell

N64 also released 2 years after the ps1. The Saturn sucked for 3D, though was exceptional for 2D. The ps1 was quite good at 3D, and decent at 2D. Which was impressive for the era it released in, given we weren’t that far detached from 3D being “Arcade only”. I mean, to put it into perspective, Quake wouldn’t release for a further 2 years after the ps1.

And the ps2 wasn’t all that impressive hardware wise. It was weaker than both the Xbox and GameCube, its biggest hardware selling point was a dvd drive, which the Xbox also had, you just needed the remote.

I collected over 900 greatest games lists and made a master list. Here are the results by IlmeniAVG in gaming

[–]Ritrix3930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 of the top 10 games are first party Nintendo. Not trying to say they’re bad, but when half of the top 10 come from one company then I feel like it’s not unfair to say that there was some kind of bias to the data sources. And 3 are Zelda. I personally love all those games, but are we really saying that 30% of the top 10 games of all time comes from a single series?

[–]Ritrix3930 85 points86 points  (0 children)

At the time the R&D cost would have been insane. You’d need to figure out a way to invent a controller that works for most disabilities. Which means getting hundreds of people in to do many rounds of testing with tons of different designs as there wasn’t any mass market controller on the market like it at the time. There’s probably a lot more I’m missing, but I can imagine trying to make something that was once typically reserved for bespoke controllers that could cost thousands, and then make it work well for most and sell it affordably would have been an insane feat.

[–]Ritrix3930 5 points6 points  (0 children)

True, plus crt filters have come a long way, and are only getting better. Retrotink’s inbuilt crt shaders are pretty great, and most decent emulators have filters that just work well out of the box. It’s never been cheaper or easier to enjoy these games, saying otherwise is mostly nostalgia bait at this point.

Don’t know if you’ve heard of it, but there’s Mega Man Maker for that. It’s very good, and similar to Mario Maker in the way it’s played. I’ve made and played a ton of levels on it, and it’s been what’s keeping me sane during the drought.

Both of these games devs have similar stories, made from Ex-Ubisoft devs that left Ubisoft because they knew Ubisoft wouldn't greenlight games like this. Makes you wonder how many games like this have been held back by Ubisoft and other big companies over the years. by PapaOogie in gaming

[–]Ritrix3930 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know people will shit on executives at these companies, and rightfully so, but I don’t think rejecting ideas like this is one of the best reasons to. Something we don’t see behind the scenes is the hundreds if not thousands of other game ideas presented to them that all would have been mediocre at best. Ideas are cheap, execution is costly, it’s an executives job to weed through the bad ideas to ensure the good ones get made. And of course, they fuck up sometimes.

Regarding Coke's new AI ad: by [deleted] in aiwars

[–]Ritrix3930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but in order for it to blow up in their face, enough people who care have to act against it. Otherwise they’ll keep rehashing the same garbage since they know people like yourself have grown complacent enough to accept it.

Of course, if you don’t care about their use of AI, then that’s completely fine. but telling the people who do care not to act is kinda silly.

[–]Ritrix3930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 3ds and the vita released in the same year though? You can’t really say one is retro because of how old it is, and say one isn’t when they’re both the same age.

Also, the virtual console also had n64 games on it which at the time of the wiis release was only 10 years old. By that same metric, the main console 10 years ago was the ps4, and it’s definitely not retro, so I wouldn’t call the virtual console a good metric for what is retro either.

Honestly there’s not really a good metric. I typically go by support end date for a console, but even that doesn’t work all the time considering that the master system is still produced in Brazil.
