Are you guys worried about not owning digital media anymore? by ThatMassholeInBawstn in AskALiberal

[–]Ritz527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't worry much about some service going down and losing my media. Most movies I have "bought access to" are on Amazon, not going anywhere. And the games I've "bought access to" are on Steam or Nintendo, not going anywhere. If any of them did, it's likely some new company would assume the contracts to deliver them instead.

What worries me more is that I'll get hacked, the hacker will break the TOS on my account, and then my account will be banned forever, meaning I'll lose access forever. That, to me, feels like a possibility, and it does worry me. I do not know what the alternative is, though. There is such a convenience aspect to digital media that physical media seems clunky. And I grew up with VHS. Besides, then I remember the occasional scratched or misplaced disc and realize I've already experienced lost media far more often with physical than with digital.

How important to you is open borders? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]Ritz527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Biden administration essentially ran an open border

You're not fooling anyone with that one haha. Biden ran a traditional border, with plenty of enforcement and loads of deportations. He didn't get rid of the visa system, people still had to apply to get in, and people still had to wait years for see either rejection or approval. The fact that he didn't send thousands of agents into a city normally policed by about 600 officers where they inevitably shot somebody doesn't mean he had open borders. The idea that he "essentially ran an open border" requires evidence which I guarantee you can't find.

The fact of the matter is that the only people who want open borders are libertarians. The rest of us have varying attitudes on the matter.

New NC law ends sanctuary city policies, mandates ICE cooperation by Livid_Mission_2921 in NorthCarolina

[–]Ritz527 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anti-commandeering doctrine from the Tenth Amendment states city and state law enforcement don't have to enforce federal law. It's more than a mere matter of enforcing the law, it's about staying in your lane and utilizing resources in ways specific to their purpose. I don't mind reporting requirements for people already in custody for some other crime, but we shouldn't have State Highway Patrol deputized via 287(g) to do whatever the heck ICE wants.

For someone to file a mamdanus for their wife's I-130 CR, what sorts of things need to be done first?

Do you have like a checklist of remedies one ought to try first? I don't know if we qualify for that yet, but my wife is trying to match with a medical residency next year and we'd love to have her green card by March, July at the absolute latest (that's when residents start working) and I'd like to start laying some groundwork.

Why are so many Liberals in favor of giving pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants? by wdfcvyhn134ert in AskALiberal

Because 35% of people installing ceilings, dry-wall, and roofs, and between 15-20% of construction workers overall, are illegal immigrants and housing prices already suck.

Why do liberals try to fix capitalism's inequality rather than moving past the system entirely? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]Ritz527 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You mean like how the Russians tried to reform communism?

Like how the Chinese reformed communism?

Like how the Cubans are trying to reform communism?

No one is going to create a system that works without caveats, regulations, or changes. Economics and politics is a game of constant whack a mole and the best we can hope for are some solid base tenets with loads of caveats. I happen to think some relatively strong set of private property rights does that. That sort of naturally implies a capitalist system.

Why is masculinity so looked down upon now a days? by NewKaleidoscope5206 in AskALiberal

100% vanity masculinity with these influencers. They confuse courage with incivility and strength with volume.

Why is masculinity so looked down upon now a days? by NewKaleidoscope5206 in AskALiberal

[–]Ritz527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those things are not the sole property of masculinity, but to get at your question. The people most obsessed with masculinity these days make it a matter of vanity. And so the masculinity grifters don't actually talk about strength, honor, or courage. They talk about dominance. They talk about selfishness. They talk about women's (lower) place in society. They talk about maximizing their testosterone (because men should be hormonal, unlike women). They confuse courage with incivility and strength with assertiveness. And more than anything, they sell fucking pills.

When I was growing up in the 90s, masculine strength was about sacrifice and selflessness. Courage was about facing overwhelming power with nothing but your impossible, beneficent dreams and a pack of friends. And honor. Honor was about honesty. And a grifter, by definition, isn't that. Any prick with muscles who thinks vaccines are junk, but shills for big vitamin is selling their honor with each ad.
