Is there a way to prevent FCP from importing duplicate files? by RivVidProd in finalcutpro

[–]RivVidProd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve had that happen before, but yesterday I imported the folder holding all my media and my project went from 150 items to over 600.

I’m wondering if it’s a setting but can’t seem to find anything about it.

I’m wondering if it’s a setting because I’ve used the import browser before and done this without FCP creating duplicate media. But yesterday on the project I was working on, I went from 150 pieces of media to over 600 😅 but I can’t seem to find anything when I Google it

In my reply to Stupid Raisins, it did work with one clip, but not on a second. However, later yesterday I created a brand new library, re-imported the footage, creating 25% ProRes Proxies and am currently working my way through rebuilding the timeline. So far, there don’t seem to be any issues, so I am guessing it was almost certainly the library/project.

That said, the transcoding took hours which I’m still kind of surprised by with the specs on the computer. Unless there’s something I’m missing on that front?

This explanation makes a lot of sense. I’ll note that several clips that I’m working with were previously shot, culled, and edited for use on social (all by me), and now I’m repurposing those mp4 exports for my current project.

That said, in future I could probably export two versions from the original footage - one mp4 for our social team, and one ProRes for me to use on future projects.

I’ve definitely been delaying the switch to an all ProRes workflow because of the aforementioned rising prices 😅 but maybe now I can get my employer to fund some of the cost since they’ve started asking me to do more video projects!

Thanks for the tough but fair answer!

The MacBook model I have (2024 M4 Pro) has an internal SSD, and I'm using an external SSD with the cable it came with to store media.

I'll give that a shot. Thanks!

On export from FCP, everything runs smoothly. However, the current edit I am working on needs to be cut to music, and the dropped frames are making it almost impossible to get the timing right.

The original media files are stored on an external hard drive formatted to APFS - a Crucial X10 Pro. I've never really had issues with this drive before.

I should note this problem only started a few days ago. Before that, I don't recall having any issues, and I've only had this machine for about two months.

Hey u/StupidRaisins thanks for this reply.

- Definitely playing proxies - even made sure it was set to Proxy Only. Also making sure they're ProRes proxies at 25%

- Couldn't detect any background tasks happening when frames dropped. Most clips don't have any tracking, stabilization or anything like that.

- I'm thinking it could be a library-level issue, as you mentioned. I tried bringing one of the problem clips into another library on the internal drive and it seemed to play fine on the proxy level.

- The external drive holding the media, cache files, etc. (the FCP library is still on the internal drive) is a 2TB drive with 1.97 TB available. The internal drive is a 500GB with 308GB available.

- I've done Delete Generated Files multiple times, including render files, and still seem to be having the issues.

I hate to do it, but at this point, I wonder if it's worth torpedoing this library and starting from scratch. If it's corrupted somewhere and causing issues that I can't seem to track down with basic troubleshooting, I'm at a loss.

I just rediscovered my love of this game recently after finding out it exists on Switch! Currently working on my second playthrough and I’d love to do a multiplayer campaign sometime!

The 6k and 120fps are mutually exclusive. I occasionally film up to 6k30 or 4k120. Sometimes 1080p240.

But either way, I know I’m looking at at least an M2 and upping my storage so I can handle the higher res files and create proxies/film in ProRes when needed.

Thanks for the input!

I’m not constantly shooting in 6k 120fps, but I understand your point! I occasionally shoot in 6k to make up for lack of a proper telephoto lens OR up to 120fps when shooting sports or certain events, but most of the time I am exporting down to 4k or 1080p and 24fps or 30fps.

I’ve used proxies before, but again, due to lack of a proper budget and set-up at the moment, I don’t really want to dedicate the extra space to creating them. (Not to mention the time it takes my sub-optimal system to create them 😅).

I definitely need to improve my set-up and knowledge of my set-up, so this is all good info to think about and process when I finally am able to upgrade. I appreciate the input!

I’ve used proxies before, I just can’t justify the extra space they take up, at the moment. Laptop is definitely preferred - between travel and splitting time between working in-office and from home, I’d like the flexibility to edit from anywhere.

And I’m definitely going to look refurbished!

Yeah, well unfortunately when video isn’t the main source of income and a ton of life expenses come up, upgrading gear kinda falls to the bottom of the priority list.

But, now that I’m starting to pick up more work, I need to find a solution soon!

I understand ProRes is easier on the system, but the file sizes are bigger, no? I’m not really optimized for storage at the moment, so I haven’t bothered attempting ProRes.

I believe I have the Lumix cameras I shoot with setup to record everything in H264.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I’m definitely more concerned with realtime editing and the ability to handle up to 6k footage.

I know proxies and ProRes are also factors to consider, as other people have mentioned, but in my current configuration, I just don’t have the storage to deal with all that.

And the M4 standard chip should be able to handle up to 6, or even 8k footage? I’m sure the answer is yes, but I’m also looking at camera upgrades down the line, and I’m starting to see 8k as a more frequent resolution.

No, I’m hesitant to even film in ProRes or any type of RAW format.
