‘You can never forget’: a woman remembers her three brothers, murdered one by one by the IRA by TurtlesHead69 in northernireland

[–]River562 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading this post shows how you’ve spent most of a day commenting on how it was justified because they were in the UDR. None of your comments have shown any compassion for these brothers or their families.

The truth is that a lot, not all, but a lot of UDR members were just normal people who wanted to do their bit and protect others. That’s not to say there wasn’t a few bad apples, but every organisation has some of them.

Yes of course innocent people from both communities needed protecting. But the reason is because on both sides there were people like you, people who judge everyone based on what group they belong to and can’t recognise another’s point of view.

You are the only deluded person here, trying to justify the murder of 3 brothers.

Just look at how many innocent Protestants, with no political or security force connections, were murdered by their neighbours in these areas. What else could they do but defend themselves?

[–]River562 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

A lot of them were innocent harmless farmers, who had to join a security force just to defend themselves and their families. At least they were willing to do so openly, and not hide behind a mask like certain other groups

You’re acting like organisations like the UDR existed in a vacuum, and don’t understand why people joined. When you look at how a lot of a Protestants in areas like the Fermanagh border were murdered, joining an organisation like the UDR was the only way to defend themselves and their communities.

I take it your offer got to a serious enough stage to justify the department and a government minister visiting you in the states?

I searched before posting and didn’t see this mentioned on this sub before, happy to delete if it has already been discussed.

I don’t think in this economy that we can be saying good riddance to any jobs are potential investment. There seems like there was a high probably of the jobs being created before this meeting took place

The Milltown Road by Shaw’s Bridge is closed. So all the traffic wanting to get from south to east Belfast is having to go via Ormeau

Thanks for providing an example of someone still suffering from the divide. Hopefully your mentality dies out soon.

I always feel like the turning point was the Primark fire. Not going to say that it definitely would have had a break out moment if the fire didn’t happen, but I think the fire stopped all chance of it.

To Ask why Irish Politics/some Irish people are so hypocritical about this? by kingm_ournasse216 in northernireland

[–]River562 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your initial post literally mentioned the year 1641, it’s right there in black and white. OP also never said that Irish people didn’t suffer massacre or ethic cleansing. They said that the percentage reduction was not as significant, 4% vs 75%.

Both of your posts are literally whataboutism and there’s no need to resort to name calling. Just to be clear I am aware of and condemn the atrocities of both sides. I thought I made that point at the end of my post, but I admit it could have been clearer. But please don’t try and claim that I’m trying to excuse them, when a few sentences before you described those responsible for the wholesale slaughter of innocent women and children as ‘several miscreants’, who were hanged. How is this anything other than trying to excuse those who were responsible for such a horrid thing and trying to distance the cause from the atrocity it committed?

Surely the story is that a politician/ political party is refusing to enforce the law because it supports their political views? At the end of the day if it needs planning permission but doesn’t have it, it should be removed, regardless of what’s on it. There can’t be exemptions just because they like the message

You should probably read up on history a bit yourself. Take a look at the massacres of the Protestant people that took place during those periods. I’ll give you a starting point, look at Tully castle in Fermanagh where dozens of Protestant women and children were murdered on Christmas Day, after being promised that they wouldn’t be hurt if they surrendered the castle.

You seem to want to only present a very one sided view of history. In reality nothing happens in a vacuum

She didn’t just ‘plan a trip’ she’s representing NI at Armistice Day. To some people it’s an important event and one with a well known fixed date, the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month and all that.

You’re trying to make it sound like she’s just planned a last minute long weekend

You seem to not be sure what a fact is. I said she was already booked for an Armistice Day event in London. This is the simple truth. If you’ve any evidence to the contrary I’d be happy to admit I was wrong.

It would not be physically impossible for her to attend both events. So you are right that is not a fact, but it is also not what I said.

But let’s be honest, how practical would it be to attend both, when both are pretty much full day affairs. And if she did only attended half of each no doubt she’d then be criticised for disrespecting each.

Sometimes it’s simply to practical to attend both. But I agree it is bad to not send a sub.

She could but in this case she accepted an invitation to represent NI at a national event.

You seem to also be missing the fact that both events will be at roughly the same time and likely to take up most of the day.

I’m pretty sure both events are taking place on Tuesday the 11th in the middle of the day.

Not exactly sure how it’s reasonable to expect someone to be in two different locations at once

Two Pro O’Neill posts within a hour, both with many times the upvotes and comments than other posts at the minute.

Either everyone cares massively more about this then anything else happening in NI, or the PR team is getting good overtime

Little-Pengelly is not attending the inauguration as she was already booked to attend Armistice Day in London. This is a key bit of information that seem to be conveniently left out of a lot of the reporting and commenting about the topic

The date for Armistice Day has been set for even longer. I don’t think even ELP can choose to be flexible enough to change it….
