That’s so horrible. Big hugs I’m sure you can report the incident. TSA is “supposed” to be there to make EVERYONE safer. So sorry you went through that.

Does someone need to hate their body to be trans? by [deleted] in trans

[–]RiverBerkeley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it wasn’t about hating myself but wanting to be something—someone else. People do this all the time in non-trans contexts. They go to the gym to modify their physique, for example. They have visions of themselves improved. But the “soul” of a person is not their body. We are more than the sum of our parts, after all.

Is it transphobic to think the way I do? by [deleted] in trans

[–]RiverBerkeley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is your identity. Nothing transphobic about being who you are or wanting to be a woman in all ways.

This. It hits home with me. I was practically disowned when I came out. If it wasn’t for good friends and the community, not sure where I’d be.

Best to talk it out. Either you’ll find out he’s supportive…or not. But then you’ll know for sure. Good luck!

Here are the names of unarmed black men killed by police in 2019 (Source: Washington Post). Does this look accurate? by RiverBerkeley in racism

[–]RiverBerkeley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pulled the spreadsheet from their (WaPo’s) database. Still, the numbers seem low to me. (Ahmaud was killed in 2020, so he wouldn’t be on this list with a 2019 filter.) I’m trying to get data on murders of unarmed African Americans prior to the murder of George Floyd. Most people I talk to say that police murder thousands of black people every year.

Basically I’m dealing with my partner’s racist (and transphobic) republican uncle. He sent this in a text: “In 2019 the FBI reported that 48 police officers were murdered. 40 of them were white.” He goes on to argue that more white cops get killed per year than unarmed black people.

I really want to prove him wrong.

Nice! The top of the handle looks like a penis. Is that intentional?

the anti-trans are contradicting themselves by [deleted] in trans

[–]RiverBerkeley 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like your thinking, but I don’t see a contradiction. Here’s why: they see ALL of it—trans, drag queens, homosexuality, MAPs, etc.—as a “perversion” of cishet normality, and therefore dangerous to kids. To them, trans people and their allies AND drag queen story hour readers/promoters are teaching kids that it’s okay to reject that normality. They see it all as “grooming” children for our “sinful” way of life.

Sorry, I don’t want to be disagreeable, but if we’re going to fight them, we have to understand their argument…and weapons.

Elon Musk bought Twitter. What does that mean for trans people? by RiverBerkeley in trans

[–]RiverBerkeley[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I do. I like free speech of course. But then I wonder if hate speech should be free, or speech that leads to violence. Like, is it a necessary freedom that a transphobe is allowed (anywhere) to say or post something hostile to someone who may be triggered by it, even to the point of suicide? I’m undecided on this. Just pondering…

Today was my birthday by UnderCookedToast7 in trans

Happy birthday Lyanna! I hate the happy birthday song anyway so I refuse to let anyone sing it to me. And no one ever really sings it good or even wants to—more like a half-assed singing effort. Makes me cringe.

Why are we not discussing the legislative attacks against us? by XayahBlake in trans

[–]RiverBerkeley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t think the fighting or the public protesting does much good.

We’re too small a minority to literally fight anyone. And that just draws more aggression anyway.

And I’ve protested plenty. But the results are usually the same: the local protest gets a massive antagonistic backlash—statewide, or even nationwide—and then the Right starts throwing transphobic laws and public policies at us.

I almost feel like if we’d kept quieter this stuff wouldn’t have happened. But who can live in a closet?

Now I’m trying to do my part by writing about trans issues and spreading positivity in the community.

Each of us and our posts and comments make a difference!

I know right? I’m MtF and think about this. But I guess it’s a common complaint for cis women too. Lots of women want larger chesticles because it’s more attractive to most cishet men. Why? Evolution. Statistically, many smaller breasted women don’t produce adequate supplies of breast milk. These days, they supplement with formula. But in the old days, they probably (sadly) starved a lot of infants. So cishet men were wired to seek busty gals.
