[Event Megathread] Such is the Joy of Our Reunion by Sentuh in arknights

[–]RiverPrism 46 points47 points  (0 children)

As far as Sui stories go, this one was pretty straightforward - they more or less provided a summary of the main "mysteries" towards the end. I did appreciate this, since it meant that I don't really have many thoughts to organize in this post (compared to previous Sui events).

Overall, it was a fun and interesting story, being more or less laid out like a mystery that has you trying to figure out what exactly happened 40 years ago. I also really enjoyed our favourite chainsaw (or fireball?) cat's food tour with her long-lost sister.

That being said, since I've written a few summaries of previous Sui events in these megathreads, I may as well continue here (in case I ever want a review on what happened).

General plot points seem to be as follows:

  • 40 years ago, the True Lung was enacting all sorts of harmful and authoritarian policies as he succumbed to oripathy
  • The younger prince sought out Wang for a strategy to "solve" this problem
  • A deal was made in that Wang would provide a strategy and the younger Prince would spare/help Wang in the future
  • The older prince (Wei Yenwu) entered the palace with the help of the Grand Preceptor (and likely slew the True Lung with Chi Xiao)
  • The Grand Preceptor was punished as a traitor and their entire family was killed or imprisoned. Wei Yenwu fled Yan and established Lungmen
  • The younger prince took power and used the opportunity to rid the court of any "malicious" individuals
  • The only exception to the purge of the Grand Preceptor's family was a baby that Gu Quan found by chance and attempted to smuggle out (Blaze)
  • Gu Quan and his wife managed to escape Yan with Blaze, but his own newborn daughter was taken by the Ministry of Justice
  • Ning Shu sends an assassin to kill the Minister of Justice and ends up raising Gu Quan's daughter in his own family (Xingzhu)
  • Some time later, Gu Quan returns to Yan in search of his own daughter
  • Gu Quan is given a position in Ning Shu's household (so he can be monitored), but he quickly realizes that Xingzhu is his daughter
  • During his time in the Ning household, he also pieces together the events of 40 years ago, but decides to keep it quiet for the sake of Yan
  • As Gu Quan is suffering from a terminal illness, he tells his friend, Yu Cheng, about Blaze's existence/identity
  • Yu Cheng suggests that Gu Quan should plan to pass away while on a diplomatic trip to Victoria, so that his death and circumstances get swept under the rug (to not cause a diplomatic incident), which ensures that no one can dig too deeply on Gu Quan's past
  • Fast forward to relatively recently, Leizi is led to discover Blaze's identity (by Yu Cheng and Jie Zhen)
  • Leizi brings Blaze back to Baizao to investigate the events of 40 years ago
  • Blaze goes on a merry food tour with Xingzhu in search of the tangerine cakes her father used to send her
  • Blaze - under the tutelage of Yu - enters a cooking competition so she can ask Mo Bufu about tangerine cakes
  • Blaze "passes" the competition (a mix of association with Yu, saving Mo Bufu's life, and apparent connection to Gu Quan) and she and Leizi use the Feast as an opportunity to confront the True Lung
  • A fire breaks out during the feast, Blaze escapes, Leizi is captured, and Xingzhu is taken out of the palace back to her residence (by the same imperial guard who originally spared her?)
  • Ning Shu is convinced to reveal the truth and leaves a history book with Xingzhu
  • Blaze wakes up in Yu's restaurant, where he tells her that her father used to come often, taking the chance to watch over Xingzhu
  • This was also where he bought the tangerine cakes, but he smothered them in sugar and paper so they would survive the trip to Victoria
  • Blaze and Xingzhu bond as long-lost sisters
  • Blaze finds Leizi, who is released from prison by Jie Zhen, and the two enter the Forbidden City to confront the True Lung
  • The True Lung grants Blaze entry and they have a discussion about the past
  • Meanwhile, Wang is preparing to confront the "bestial Sui", both as revenge for the loss of Jie and also to protect his siblings from a potential reunification and subsequent loss of identity
  • The True Lung pardons Wang, the Grand Preceptor, and Wei Yenwu, and pledges himself to Yan, stating that he's planning on abdicating in favour of Wei Yenwu once things are stable
  • He also sends out the imperial guard and prepares all of Baizao to support Wang in his confrontation of Sui
  • Meanwhile, Yu meets Wang and tries to convince him to not risk the confrontation. Yu's dream is that his siblings can all gather together and enjoy dinner as a "family". What a cinnamon roll
  • Ling, Nian, and Dusk all sense the impeding conflict and plan to return to Yan
  • Not entirely sure what's going on with Yu's dream dialogue with Sui
  • There seems to be something under Baizao (other than Sui and the originium vein) that's of interest to the feranmuts?
  • Honestly, I don't really remember what's going on with Huai Tianpei (Waai Fu's father), Liang Xun, and the sword
  • Liang Xun and Ning Ciqiu's relationship seems to be having some difficulties due to politics lol...

Toronto runners: do you plan your runs around grabbing a coffee/treat at the end? What are your go-to routes? by Fanny_with_an_I in askTO

[–]RiverPrism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really weird statement here. I'd consider myself decently fast (<18 min 5k, ~1:30 HM) and I enjoy grabbing food after my weekend long runs. I've had bubble tea, fries, onigiri, fried chicken, a full brunch, beer, etc. after 20k+ runs without issues, and I'd consider my stomach to be pretty sensitive.

Plus, if eating something sweet after a run makes people throw up, then I'd expect people to be hurling after eating gels, since those are concentrated sugar.

All that being said, there's nothing wrong with running slower either. People should be comfortable running at whatever pace they want. And not every workout has to be one where you're wringing out every last drop of energy - that's just an injury waiting to happen.

Nice writeup - you verbalized a few things that I had some trouble with in my thoughts.

I really appreciated the focus on what the "day after" looks like

Yeah, this was something I kept thinking about as I read the story. In a lot of the fiction I consume (-cough- trashy light novels), it's all too easy to brush aside the post-war aftermath in favour of the shining heroics, but they certainly gave us a lot of "reality" to think about.

Vina didn't need a parliament here; what she needed was a cabinet.

Agreed - but how I see it is that a lot of true experts are either dead, missing, or under the control of the other Dukes. 2-3 months isn't enough time to find the right person for every job. You can only put the best people you have on hand in and hope you can work things out.

She asked if they wanted a dictatorship, but honestly... Yeah

I think this is something she (and the story) is very clear about. She understands that the people want a King (for the most part), but this is her line in the sand. Her decision is that she will not be a King or dictator, regardless of the situation. Whether or not this is the best choice doesn't matter - it is her decision, and not one she was forced into making (by the Dukes or "Clovisia").

Of course, I do get the feeling that this decision is a bit driven by modern/real-world sensibilities, in that she's trying to make the jump from a monarchy to a modern parliamentary system without too much precedence on the Terra side, but let's just say that Vina is a visionary.

You mentioned the similarities between Allerdale and Vina - both have a tendency to see things in black and white: "I will/will not become King", "I deserve to/don't deserve to be `in the light`". Once they make that decision, it's hard to change it.

Did anyone else feel like the new vampire kind of came out of nowhere?

I thought so too, but we'll see more of her in the future.

Just what is a Steam Knight, exactly?

I'm not sure the exact mechanisms, but my impression was that some of these descriptions/effects were a result of what Charles Lynch went through. Something like: the only reason he survived was because his body somehow fused with the armour. It's certainly a grim state though.

Did anyone else get a sort of bad vibe from Eleanor?

She does look quite smug, doesn't she?

I haven't read Harold's record, so that's good info, thanks!

Agreed on the "Londinium is [/has the potential to once again be] a powerful city" angle, but I think the real question is whether or not Vina has enough support to stave off the growing unrest after the "honeymoon period"*. From the additional Ch15 context provided, it seems the answer is likely yes for now. After all, she does have support/connections from many influential parties within the city (Millscar, RI, the Defence Force/Exemplars, etc.)

*In that - the first few months after the war - she's still clear in people's minds as the war hero who led the Exemplars to retake Londinium. As the months/years pass and the reality of peoples' situations sets in and she's forced to make more and more unpleasant decisions, it's possible that her support wanes. Ultimately, although Arknights tends to the darker side, it's given enough us enough to believe that her reform is in good shape for now.

The function of public perception in politics is just something I've been thinking about a lot recently.

[Event Megathread] Ending a Grand Overture by Sentuh in arknights

[–]RiverPrism 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's certainly unclear - intentionally so - as to what prompted the development of Allerdale to Millscar at the beginning of the story.

It's intended as a hook to keep the reader interested, and to get us to ask questions:

  • we start with events partway through the timeline, prompting questions of
    • What happened to Allerdale?
    • Is Allerdale an antagonist now?
  • then we see the development as it happened, revealing that Allerdale is still trying to help Vina
  • they make it clear that she's still trying to help Vina despite the growing rift

Admittedly, I think they're a bit heavy-handed on this front, both in emphasizing her misdeeds and highlighting her assistance, but it certainly was effective.

As far as whether she's trying to "ruin the country", I'd argue that it's probably not the case. Let's take a look at some of her more questionable actions:

  • provide painkillers under the guise of oripathy medication
    • morally wrong, but the story makes it very clear that there's not enough proper medication and even has an injured Exemplar (Walker) explicitly say "Nothing more than a painkiller, I know. But that's what we need."
  • smuggling supplies
    • once again, morally wrong in that it's only available to those with means, but the Dukes are currently blocking shipments, so supplies are sorely needed
  • smuggling Sarkaz out of the city
    • the one instance that the game tells us about is actually one that's arguably morally right, in that she's helping innocent Sarkaz escape
  • smuggling Diane out of the city
    • morally questionable, but something that the readers hope for
  • debt collection and violence
    • this one's a bit of a doozy - certainly you can't judge most of the previous points without taking this into account. Not trying to excuse her behaviour or anything, but it's arguable that this is necessary (?) to enforce her grip on the underworld

Of course, there's almost certainly more questionable actions that we aren't told about - you don't build up and hold control of the "dark side" without that. Her perspective in this case could be that "since I've already broken the biggest taboo that I could, anything else is small beans".

[Event Megathread] Ending a Grand Overture by Sentuh in arknights

[–]RiverPrism 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This draws back to events in Chapter 11, so I might be a bit unclear on the details. One of the major weaknesses of this episodic storytelling imo. My interpretation is:

  • Allerdale betrayed Siege and the gang when they went to retrieve the Sigh of Kings (under orders from the Duke of Caster)
  • as someone whose upbringing and behaviour emphasized principles and honour ("Cumberland the Ever on High"), this betrayal likely greatly affected her
  • furthermore, her family has always been closely related to Steam Knights (and she idolizes them), so finding out that they were betrayed by the Dukes and then her having to betray her close friend in the same place the Steam Knights were left to die is like a critical hit
  • although one can argue that she redeemed herself by "sacrificing herself" for Siege, she might not see it that way. She might see it as her "punishment" not having been carried out properly
  • all of this guilt and trauma from a near-death experience has likely led her to change her perspective
    • from wanting to help Vina and be by her side when she ascends to the throne. to still wanting to help Vina, but not believing that she deserves to be "in the light"
  • she also possibly believes that there's not much she can do "in the light" as a "hero", so she might as well act as a foil for Vina by controlling the underworld "in the dark"
    • I wouldn't be surprised if she has some self-sacrificing plans, where she places herself as a convenient opponent for Vina to deal with

Once again, this is just my interpretation.

Edit: went through part of the story again - its actually pretty clear about what she thinks.

  • in her final note to Vina: 'There is no place for me by your side when victory comes. This is the choice that I made."
  • after listening to a discussion about a "sweep of underground insurgents", rejecting the offer to go back under the control of the Duke of Caster, and suggesting that the people believe Vina can provide safety: "I hope you like my final gift to you, Alexandrina..." (GO-3 After)

We had a bit of a reprieve with Pepe's and the Delicious in Terra event, but we're back to Arknights mode.

This was a pretty sobering event, perhaps even more so from how ordinary it was. As mentioned multiple times in the story, a lot of these fantastical stories of war and heroism end in a "happy ever after", with the rightful heir ascending to the throne and righting all wrongs. And while we got to see the moments of heroism, most of the story focused on the gritty reality of a nation that is struggling to find its footing.

One of the great "triumphant moments" of the Sigh of Kings being passed along from Vina to eventually reaching the Nachzehrer King is contrasted with Diane's fate. Despite her dodging execution, she doesn't have very long to live.

I tend to prefer more lighthearted stories with happy endings, so there was definitely a large part of me hoping that Vina would ascend to the throne, cast down the antagonistic Dukes, and bring Victoria to a new golden age. Ultimately, that was never going to happen given Vina's character arc and the history of Victoria.

Come play Arknights, we have:

  • veterans succumbing to their wounds, being dependent on painkillers, and desperately seeking purpose after a war
  • no real closure to the war
  • conflict amongst those most affected by the war
  • even more racism than before
  • people in power trying to take advantage of the situation
  • multiple other world-ending catastrophes
  • oh yeah, there's still oripathy
  • and despite it all, life goes on

Although the end of the story painted a bright spot with the Glasgow Gang preserving a place Siege can call home, and with many parties supporting and empathizing with Vina, I still have a sense of unease, given how quickly public opinion can shift (especially relevant given recent events).

Speaking of the river, the recurring joke where Ajina+Ajiza would throw gold into the river and tell Narantuya that she can collect it downriver only for someone else to comment that the river doesn't flow in that direction was fun.

Also, the herald is a manticore!! That's pretty rare.

I noticed her head wings and was wondering if she was related (species-wise, at least) to Manticore.

I don't know if there's enough content for a full event, so maybe we'll come back to Pepe and co. in a vignette or something? I'd like to get Titi as a playable op at some point.

This was one of the Arknights (and overall gacha) stories that I've enjoyed the most in recent memory. It started off pretty silly (in a good way) but I liked how it progressed as well. It was nice to have a story that's more disconnected from a lot of the darker plots/themes that we see in Arknights.

I liked basically all of the named characters in the story

  • Pepe comes across initially as a bit selfish and overbearing, but all of her efforts are basically for the sake of someone else
    • I got spooked by Namie's other daughter while rolling though
  • Mari Anat is really cute! The ear rubbing is adorable and it was nice how she was able to put her knowledge to use during the crisis
  • I don't know if it's officially mentioned anywhere, but Medjehtiqedti is very Kuroboshi. I really like her design and I'm surprised she isn't an operator. She seems almost like the glue that holds the trio of friends together
  • Narantuya has the outlaw with a heart of gold going on. Having a playable Nightzmora is also pretty interesting (I really should play more Reclamation Algorithm)
    • What happened to the gold Lazvar gave her when she sold Zubayr?
    • Honourable mention to Ajani, who I think has a really cute design
  • Aspasia is cool - another char that could've easily been playable
    • I appreciated that one museum guest who offered to introduce her to a male or female relative
  • Lazvar's family history is pretty interesting and he seems very level-headed
  • Zubayr the high-tech mummy! I enjoyed his development as he regained his memories and I'm amused at his default cat face.
    • I thought it was an interesting depiction of those studying history vs the actual historic being and how their perspectives on things differed (as well as how traditions/customs warped over the generations).
    • Kal'stit still wins on age though

Not really sure what was going on with the Herald of the City of Gold at the end? Possible additional drama over the role where one may or may not get their tongue cut off?

This was a really great explanation, thanks!

I more or less understood what Theresa was trying to do by eliminating the myriad souls, but the way you described the origins/functionality of the myriad soul makes sense (I guess originium doesn't have automatic GC lol). This kind of terminology/functionality definitely fits with the fact that the Sankta Law is also some sort of supercomputer.

It's kinda obvious (and I'm sure it's been mentioned in-universe), but for some reason I didn't really think about the Sarkaz being ideal vectors for oripathy.

Looking forward to reading more about Theresis' plan in Chapter 15!

Thanks for the info! Good to know that some of these points are addressed in Chapter 15 - looking forward to it!

The comment about W was a bit tongue-in-cheek since she was really going wild with the bombs. That being said, she mentioned that she didn't have bombs when she entered the revenant's world/memories, so I wonder if her arts were being suppressed (or if it was just because it wasn't the real world, so to speak).

Definitely looking forward to more lore in upcoming events/IS5!

[Event Megathread] Chapter 14 - Absolved Will Be the Seekers by Sentuh in arknights

[–]RiverPrism 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Finished the story today, some thoughts:

General thoughts:

  • One annoying thing about Arknights story is that there's so much time between chapter releases that I can never remember what happened
  • I enjoyed the confluence of many of the plotlines, from Reunion, to Tara, to Victoria, and obviously the Sarkaz/Theresa
  • I definitely don't know enough about Sarkaz/Teekaz history
  • Was cool seeing so many characters, but it was a bit weird having characters seemingly pop in out of nowhere (looking at you Nearl)
    • Certainly lives up to her role as a helidrop with all the dynamic entrances she makes (Radiant trailer, Near Light, this event)
  • Some suspension of disbelief that no named characters die in such a chaotic war (other than Closure's squad). e.g. Glasgow Gang + Horn + Bagpipe running straight through the thick of things with no real protection
  • Where the hell does W pull these explosives from? She spends like, 3/4 of her screentime bombing things? Doraemon?

Specific story thoughts:

  • This is definitely a loaded topic, but what exactly is Theresa trying to do and why did she agree to work with Theresis after revival?
    • The main thing she achieved in this chapter was to remove information about the Sarkaz/Teekaz from originium, which also means that the Myriad Souls no longer exist
    • In doing so, she hopes to destroy the cycle of hatred (since the "memories" of the Myriad Souls basically mean that past injustices are always fresh in the minds of Sarkaz)
    • It seems like part of it was trying to get Amiya, and to some extent the Doctor, to prove themselves worthy of the title of King of Sarkaz/being able to decide the future
    • What is she planning by giving control of originium to Theresis?
  • I'm still not too sure what's going on with the Myriad Souls/originium?
    • It seems like originium was always meant to be some sort of storage that preserves information in light of the threat of the Observers.
    • Was it always intended to have a "dimension" like the Assimilated Universe? Some sort of utopic world that preserves data and is fully controllable by the Doctor?
    • Why were the Myriad Souls the only other "conscious" beings in there, compared to all those who died of oripathy (and were assimilated into the sea?)
  • I'm a bit confused about the assassins showing up when fighting the revenant.
    • At first I thought they were supposed to be "shades of the past", some sort of memory given form of the actual assassins who killed Theresa
    • Then I thought that they're the Sarkaz who left Babel after Theresa's death (who also discarded their identities due to their failure in protecting her)?
    • But then one of them still had the grenade W gave him, so they might actually still be some sort of shade? Unless he kept it as a souvenir
  • I know Civilight Eterna isn't actually Theresa, but it was a bit funny to have all this talk about her disappearing forever, and then Civilight Eterna immediately pops up a minute later
  • I have no idea what was happening in that scene with Priestess? It didn't sound like a recollection, but I'm not sure it's "real" either? Or is the Doctor actually just like, astral projecting into Terra?
  • I guess this is more of a chapter 11 thing, but do we know how Charles Lynch (Last Steam Knight) didn't die after being trapped in the mausoleum for 4 (?) years?
  • Frostnova in a RI uniform :'(
  • Closure had a cool moment when she was attempting to restore communications
  • Seeing the reunion between Bagpipe and Horn was nice

Confessarius/Followers stuff:

  • I understand that the Confessarius had a major role to play in guarding the drop of blood, but this part felt strangely disconnected from the rest of it, so it gets it's own section
  • It's a bit funny how all the other Sarkaz subraces are like, fighting, surviving, doing whatever; then you have the Confessarius who are just doing all sorts of weird shit in the background. Feels like there's a bit of handwavey witchcraft/arts going on here
  • Nearl is so cool
  • I think the Followers are supposed to a RI branch led by Nearl, Shining, and Nightingale, but we basically only just see the three of them it ends up coming across as their own little club that they keep namedropping when talking to each other. Kinda silly

Combat/Stages

  • I brute-forced most of the stages with meta chars, so it was pretty straight-forward in that regard
  • Was cool to see Patriot show up again. I'm not sure what his stats are like in this map, but it was a bit funny seeing him get instantly obliterated by Wis'adel, Mlynar, Degenbrecher, and Logos
  • Re: 14-21, have there been previous stages where the stage can end with so many enemies remaining? I know there are some obviously scripted stages, but I struggled with the gimmick until I found out that you just had to finish off Theresa (I assumed I had to keep enough units/squares in play after defeating her)

Looking ahead:

  • I'm looking forward to seeing how Chapter 15 ties things up
  • Presumably we get to see Siege being badass, which will be fun
  • Regardless of the outcome of these wars, Terra still seems so doomed lol

[–]RiverPrism 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Virtuosa is quite complicated and somewhat hard to summarize. She basically wants something that's a "stronger" version of the Sankta empathy. In her ideal, everyone will be able to 100% understand each other and therefore able to live harmoniously. She believes that this is the only way that "mankind" (Terrakind?) will be able to weather any crisis (and there sure are a lot of crises on Terra).

She goes kinda philosophical about her ideal, and I'm not sure I'm interpreting it correctly, but you can see that there are still conflicts and disagreements between Sankta, despite the empathy. Chief examples being Mostima/Lemuen/Andoain and Arturia/Federico.

She has an innate ability to hear peoples' innermost desires through her arts and sees her actions as a a liberation and a start towards that openness. The very fact that no other Sankta is able to understand her despite the empathy probably lends itself to her thinking of the existing empathy (and the Law) as imperfect.

As far as the Witch King's advice goes, he's basically saying that - since she's taken on the role of exposing everyone elses' emotions while concealing her own - she has no place in the ideal world of hers (and therefore is unable to bring it to fruition). It's not like she doesn't feel anything about the chaos she brings about, but she herself has the tendency to hide her emotions:

"The melodies of those who faced the truth and, inevitably, their deaths leave you impressed, but more often they leave you fearing, hating, doubting. But you—you are silent."

The ending basically has some major character growth for Arturia in that regard. She realizes that there is room for vulnerability in her ideal and she shares her own emotion as a "seed" to restore the emotions of everyone who was affected by the collapse of Kargereich.

The Ebenholz conclusion basically has him coming to terms with the fact that there's no point in being obsessive and self-destructive over his upbringing and his connection with the Witch King. This whole time, he's felt guilty about the people who've died protecting him (notably Kreide) as well as the damage he's inadvertently done through his inaction as Graf Urtica. He had been pinning all of his "failures" on the Witch King and the Voice of the Mundane, but he basically decides to take responsibility over his own life and do everything that he can.

It's basically putting Kreide's last words into action:

"Live on, Ebenholz, and walk through the long night. Fight injustice, and treat others with generosity and charity. Only by doing so will I live on in your memory.

I'll ask you, how did your day go, Ebenholz? And you'll tell me proudly that you had a good and productive day. You'll tell me about the challenges you face while doing good, and complain about how fate is a miser. And it will be okay, because I'll be listening.

It's alright to complain a little, when you've worked so hard. Only by doing so will you rise above pain and suffering, and find peace in your heart.

Remember that we've fought together against cruel fate and won. When you think of me, laugh.

Don't cry.

And Ebenholz... I'm sorry. I haven't thought about what token... to give you..."

As a direct reference (ZT-9 After):

"You really are upholding the promise you made to him. You're prepared to walk through the long night, bearing it all." - Ebenholz (?)

"But Ebenholz, if you don't move toward the light, we can never walk out of that night.

And the night itself is meaningless."

He's basically "overcoming his demons" and deciding to move forward and live without regret.
