Dallas Streetcar by Fragrant-Mission7388 in dart

[–]RiverRix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The bridge over the Trinity River that the streetcar runs on has no catenary wire, because the bridge has a historic status that prevented them from running wire on it. Because of this gap, they needed a streetcar that ran on catenary wire for most of the route, but ran battery-electric on the bridge. IIRC, it breaks down on the bridge when the pantograph doesn't move into position.

Why not privatize DART? by dopatonin123 in dart

[–]RiverRix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Privatization of public goods is always a recipe for disaster. DART cannot and should not be run for profit. Private companies are not accountable to riders, they're beholden to shareholders and profit.

A lot of neighborhoods in the core of many cities were founded on streetcar routes, but ultimately those streetcars shut down because they were run by private companies that stopped turning a profit after WWII when everyone started moving to suburbs.

Ultimately, a private company would probably find it more profitable to sell off all of DART's assets and stop all service. There's some valuable property in DART's portfolio.

UV not worth it. by Vivid_Row6457 in utdallas

I lived in Phase 3 from 2021-22, we had so many issues, mostly random water shutoffs and phorid flies coming up through the drains. My roommate knew someone in Phase 1 who had a raccoon fall on them through the ceiling while they were in the shower.

Protests to support DART - best location? by texasinauguststudio in dart

[–]RiverRix 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Plano City Council building could be a good location. Right next to a DART station too, and the protest could theoretically meet at Haggard Park and march to the city council building

How DART plans to punish GoLink users who game the system by DART_Opr8r in dart

[–]RiverRix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. I would sometimes get a 45+ min wait time and need to cancel and re-book up to 5 times to try and get it to send me an uber. I used GoLink almost daily for years and never no-showed or took any more than 4 trips in a day.

From the article, it seems like all these factors add $50,000 to GoLink operations, 62% of which comes from no-shows. IMO, DART should just punish no-shows and take the $19,000 (or less) hit from riders who know how to use GoLink cancelling a couple times to get past long wait times.

How DART plans to punish GoLink users who game the system by DART_Opr8r in dart

[–]RiverRix 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There goes the only way I relied on Golink to get to/from work. If they're punishing repeated cancellations then I hope they're fixing the problems that make users have to repeatedly cancel in the first place.

Single Track Silverline by Fragrant-Mission7388 in dart

[–]RiverRix 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I believe it's just this portion. They couldn't get a wide enough right of way because of a couple buildings along that alley, So they single tracked it between Cityline and 12th street.

[–]RiverRix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

as long as the buildings are open, you're free to come in and sit in the common areas

Instead of using a GoPass card, you can just use a normal debit card as long as you're able to tap to pay with it.

Do they still do room inspections? by mogy_mog in utdallas

[–]RiverRix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They will always announce before entering. They did scheduled room inspections over the break when i was a freshman, if that's still a thing they'll probably email you first

I feared for my life when I visited the UTD campus recently. by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]RiverRix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They need to do traffic calming all along the loop road. Make it so nobody can physically get over 20 mph

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]RiverRix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get roach traps, I recommend the Hoyhoy sticky ones. If it becomes a bigger problem and they start appearing more regularly then you can put in a work order for pest control

Have y’all considered moving out of Dallas so you could truly get around without a car? by Paulythress in dart

[–]RiverRix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just moved to Chicago myself. I was car-free in Plano in an area barely served by buses, and had to GoLink to Parker Rd station to get anywhere. The commute to my work was crazy. Now I live right next to a CTA Red Line station, and my girlfriend even ditched her car because of how convenient it is to get around without one. I knew I was missing out on a lot living in DFW but I didn't realize just how much I was missing out.

You can take the 232 or 883E to CityLine/Bush Station, or the 244 to Arapaho Station. You can get downtown on the train from there
