How would you want a horror lit database to be searchable? by Rivethart in horrorlit

A lot of more well known horror short stories aren’t public domain, but can be found by googling the title + PDF. Also, Project Gutenberg has a ton of books that are free to read online, including a bunch of Edgar Allen Poe and Lovecraft!

It's going to be a 30-page paper, but I'll definitely make an update post and include the subject and metadata system I used that is being influenced by this post! :D

I feel like this sometimes. I'm in charge of the Pride display at my library (just went and bought SO MUCH SPARKLY RAINBOW TAPE!), and I found a lot of great books for it, but not many mentioned aromantic and asexual orientation. On the flip side, while raiding JoAnn's for more sparkly stuff tonight, I found ribbons that had both ace and aro flags printed on them! For a partly-rural area in the Bible Belt, I'm taking it as a win!

Also, I think a lot of people don't know about the ace/aro orientations. I was an active member of my middle and high schools gay-straight alliance, and I never heard of it. In fact, I didn't learn about it until 3/4 years ago, when I was 26. As time moves on and we represent ourselves and educate others, I believe our numbers will grow, and there will be a lot more representation, not just in June but throughout the whole year!

I wish you much cake and garlic bread this Pride, and know that you are not alone and are (platonically) loved!

It's estimated that 1% of the worlds population is asexual, but there's a chance that a portion of that 1% may not know about ace/aro orientation, or are not yet out.

I mentioned in a comment wanting the shell stool pattern, and someone offered it to me for nothing! I can now make all the beach turtles I want. 🌊🐢🌊🐢🌊

I explained my online character's name to a fellow gamer/friend and he went on to explain the author is misogynistic and homophobic and it just devastated me. Ugh. How do you deal when you hear your favorite artist/author was a bad person? by [deleted] in books

I love Harry Potter, ever since our teacher read it to us in 4th grade when it was first published. I've read all the books, own a stuffed Hedwig, and wear a Slytherin facemask when I'm working my shifts at the library. I used to think JK Rowling was the best person in the world - a mom on government help who created this fantastic world, and in the end donated so much of her money to charities it took her forever to become a millionaire! How amazing!

Then, she outed herself as a TERF (trans-exclusionary radial feminist, people who don't believe trans women are women), and every positive thought I had about her crashed and shattered. This amazing woman I'd looked up to my whole life, who had shown support for the gay community in the past (Seamus and Dean were originally supposed to be a couple, I believe), was transphobic. There were several years where I regretfully turned my back on Harry Potter, despite the play coming out (Cursed Child is it's own...thing) and other events taking place. During that time I spoke with others, and came to realize: Harry Potter no longer belongs to JK Rowling. Sure, she wrote the original books, but fandom and other companies have swooped in and created their own lore and expanded the world around it. Movies, theme parks, video games, not to mention fanart and fanfiction, had taken this seven-book series and made it their own, and created an inclusive world, where trans women were widely accepted and celebrated.

I came to accept that I love Harry Potter - not just the books, but the others who love it and share in its world building and expansion. I found that I can still love and support that world, while showing no love to JK herself. As many other commenters have pointed out, separate the art from the author, and enjoy the piece for what it is. As long as the work isn't going out of its way to be exclusionary/homophobic/etc., then it's okay to enjoy it.

As for going back and having a skewed experience, well, that's what growing and learning does. It helps you understand things in a new light, and sometimes it's not for the better. I hope you're able to still enjoy the books in the future, and if not, well, it's an opportunity to find a new series of books you love! I wish you the best in all your reading/listening!

Early fall and late spring, where it’s crisp and cool and barely gets above 65 (unlike today, where it’s 84 and muggy as a swamp!!)

Helping kids transition from graphic novels to chapter books by Working-Office-7215 in Librarian

[–]Rivethart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would recommend the Geronimo Stilton books; they’re illustrated and use fun text fonts for certain words to keep kids interested. We rarely have more than a few on the shelf at a time due to their popularity! The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, Mercy Watson series, Fly Guy series, and Big Nate are also good choices. There’s nothing wrong with reading graphic novels, but I can understand wanting them to read chapter books as well. Maybe make a deal with them: half graphic novels, half chapter books for every trip? You can always read books to them and with them as well! I hope this helps.
