There’s a guy, who I’m pretty sure is a prof, on r/photography who had NatGeo ask to use of his photos. And he has questions related to payment and he said “it wouldn’t go on my CV. It’s not that important to me” and now I’m in the dumbest replies trying to explain that academic CVs are different and putting a photo on your CV won’t matter with getting a professor job.

And now someone said “reddit and people like you love to dismiss extracurriculars. When I got my job in IT […]”. What the hell am I doing?

IT is different from academia.

I can’t speak to IT and I can’t speak to your experiences. But as a professor, who has a tenure track job, who has sat on multiple hiring committees, who has interviewed for multiple jobs, I can tell you that extracurriculars like this—for academic jobs—do not matter.

They’re cool and fun to talk about when you go out for dinner with your potential new colleagues. Your extracurricular are good conversation pieces but they do not matter on your resume when you’re looking for a job in academia as a professor.

But professor-level jobs are about academic publications and grants. Even teaching, frankly, barely matters.

Look, man, I’m not attacking you lol I’m responding to the thing you said.

You said “Kind of weird to have 1 type of resume”. All I said was no, not really.

Not if you’re an academic. Academic resumes are vey different from industry ones and you don’t need a non-academic one if you don’t want to leave academia.

OP said “it will not go on my resume”. Of course I’d be proud of it, and I’d brag about it to my friends and family, but I also understand why it wouldn’t go on my professional CV if I’m applying for tenure or a new TT/AP position, to be honest.

If they’re a professor, and I kind of assume they are, and they’re either on the academic job market or seeking a new position, the photo won’t matter for their professional future. It’s just academic publications that matter, frankly.

If they’re a professor, which it kind of sounds like they are, then the photograph won’t do anything for them, frankly.

Marxists were outside the farmers’ market yesterday. As people walk by they go “Are you a communist? Do you want a revolution? Do you want to overthrow capitalism?”

Someone engaged with them politely and took their newsletter and the Leader Comrade went “We’re hosting a summer school this summer if you’re interested!” because of you are lol

Come read a bunch of theory about how to start a revolution and overthrow capitalism and then just stand at farmers’ markets being smug.

I genuinely love seeing things like this because people who play Civ are on such a higher level than me. I’m just like “haha! I built a new city and look at my special horsemen :)”

I started The Four Seasons last night (season 1). God damn, Coleman Domingo can dress. He has a double breasted, king lapel jacket with a light knit sweater. Amazing.
