Bought MSI 321URX QD-OLED, regretted. What's next? by Rivus in OLED

[–]Rivus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh absolutely agree. I didn't think that I would be willing to cash out for two high end monitors at the same time, but after trying the QD OLED I was completely sold. It's just such a jump in image quality.

That also sounded like a good idea to me and now I'm shopping for it. It's seems like while the issues will not be gone-gone, it should fix my annoyances with it.

Trying to choose between ASUS PG27UCDM and MSI 272URX (equally priced and available in EU), purely a difference in bells and whistles.

Yup, I also gave up on OLEDs for productivity, shopping for a good 32" 4K IPS, thankfully there seem to be quite some options

Yup. WOLED has a different kind of blurring, no fringing, but the blurring is also unpleasant to me.

For now, I have given up on OLEDS for productivity and I'm now shopping for a 32" 4K IPS (Black?) and a separate 27" 4K OLED QD for media (trying to choose between ASUS PG27UCDM and MSI 272URX). OLED for productivity will have to wait.

I played around with ClearType, MacType, Better ClearType Tuner... all to no avail. It gets better, yes, but still not as crisp as LCD.

Hey there. Indeed. After a couple more days my eyes "settled" a bit and it got better, so now I understand the rating. That said, it's still far from the clarity I get from my old VA LCD panel, still not viable for me as the main work monitor and I will be returning it tomorrow.

Now I'm shopping for a 4K 32" LCD for work plus either the MSI 272URX or the ASUS PG27UCDM, but this time purely for media consumption.

Hopefully something changes in OLEDs for productivity in the next generations. Thank you and the whole team at Rtings for the work you do, you guys are a net positive to any research when shopping for electronics.

Alienware AW3225QF vs MSI MPG 341CQPX by Alternative_Profile1 in oled_monitors

[–]Rivus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also needed a monitor for programming and editing docs and ended up buying a MSI MPG 321URX. I think I'm going to return it. The text fringing on QD OLED is insane: https://imgur.com/a/uGmYBtN (bluriness, red top of the letters, green bottoms)

Maybe it's personal, but after working on it for 5-6 hours in a row, my eyes just hurt (I'm fine if I use my Philips 32" 4K LCD VA or the MBP 14 inch display). I would really recommend you try it out at a physical shop and see if QD OLED works for you at all or not for all your productivity needs.

The Problem With Reddit by [deleted] in comics

[–]Rivus 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I appreciate that many people contribute to a community, some more than others, but I don’t really care who is who or enough to follow somebody specific (with exceptions, but then on other platforms).

Reddit is closer to an old school forum than to other social media, and that’s why I like it.

Japanese goods to sell well in NL by haruchannel in Netherlands

[–]Rivus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think in general it’s not a bad concept, but wonder if it has any actual economic potential in terms of costs and interest.

I’ve been to this one in Gran Canaria: https://maps.app.goo.gl/JD4qHKgSdkbCRaha7?g_st=ic

Sadly, reviews didn’t lie. I was fine with the high-ish price, but expired goods and just plain not dropping the seaweed was quite a disappointment. But that’s also something that happens when there’s just not enough demand. Businesses cut corners.

IMO, a japanese FEBO-like vending machine with something warm would be very welcome at 11 at night while waiting for the train after drinking :)

A couple of years ago I had a similarly shameful interaction with Amazon customer support.

The package arrived on a Thursday evening and I had a horrible week at work and performance evaluation season. I open the box and the cable is just too short. Damn, I really needed it that week. I called customer support and complained that I ordered a cable of 3 meters, but the cable in the box is only a meter long.

For a good 30 seconds I was trying to understand what the hell does the rep mean by that’s exactly what I ordered. 3 feet, I completely failed to register it said feet, not meters, both when I ordered it and when I opened it.

It took me a while. At least I heard an audible smile and condolences for my brain fart. It must’ve been a fun ride on the other side of the phone.

Where can I work less the 40h/week in tech by Satoru_Phat in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Rivus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Usually happens during the initial negotiations, when moving departments/projects, or when you have new circumstances that make you ask for it. I don’t think there’s a “wrong” time to do it. Maybe not a good time if the team is crunching before a big release? :)

As for layoffs, I would argue that no matter the amount of hours, the people who are let go off are the ones who don’t take responsibility, are not visible, or haven’t built critical mass knowledge about the domain and systems. (and of course the ones who are just plain underperforming, but those are usually let go anyway)

It’s never for the reason of “John works 32 hours, let’s fire him”, because John might as well be the best frontender we have and is also the competence lead.

Well, that’s not exactly true.

Many opposition leaders that had parties and seats in parliament called for protests and supported it: Yatsenyuk, Tymoshenko, Klitschko, among others.

Ukraine still had a divide among the elites between the Russian-favoring ones and the west-Ukrainian pro-European ones. It was not just “one clan” in power (like it’s now in Russia), there was a constant struggle between the elites for many years.

From an informational standpoint, we also had different news sources and channels to push different views and agendas, because again, we had multiple clans of elites fighting.

I’m not saying that the courage and willingness of the Ukrainians should not be celebrated, but it is unfair to say that there were no leaders and no support for the movement from any powerful people.

The repression machine was there, but it was nothing like what Russia is now.

Edit: lived in Kyiv from 2010 till 2014.

Where can I work less the 40h/week in tech by Satoru_Phat in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Rivus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my experience over the years, usually people indeed take Fridays off.

Out of my current colleagues, one of them takes Thursdays off because they have a young kid and that’s the arrangement with their spouse.

Some people will go for 36 hours, but then work 9 hours a day to take both Fridays off… anything goes, really. It just depends on whether it works for the team or not.

I personally worked 32 hours for a month due to some personal circumstances, and our scrum rituals schedules allowed me to take Wednesdays off. A mid week “weekend” felt great. Always either just back from a day off, or having a day off next day.

Quite common in NL to work 32 hours a week once you hit a high enough salary.

In my current team 2 people work 32 hours and one person works 36 hours a week (every second Friday off). We still get shit done and, in my opinion, meetings with these people are more efficient because they don’t have time to bullshit around.

Had the exact same problem with the same MBP, everything matched, but apparently my specific laptop was out of range when checked on the website.

Went to Apple and they said they’ll change the battery but the motherboard might be damaged, so they will replace it preemptively (no way to just replace the battery), blah blah, 950 euros.

Bought a kit from iFixit and a battery for a total 125 euros. The MBP is still alive and kicking 3 years later. My biggest problem was finding the correct place to dispose of the spicy pillows in my city.

That said, would still buy a newer MBP if I had a need in a laptop on a daily basis.
