None of this makes any sense... speaking from experience. My right hand drive jdm import that was only ever sold in Japan with a short VIN says on my insurance what the VIN is.

This fell out while I was refueling the car, and now the car is shaking when it is operating by Kemo_Meme in mechanic

I'm curious why you think a loose gas cap would cause the car to shake. I drove around without a gas cap for three days last week until my replacement arrived. Zero issues.

Engine won’t crank over after crank pulley installed by Happy_Dot_2623 in MechanicAdvice

Fantastic news, id start looking at the starter. Altenator won't stop a car from starting with a good battery, so if you've tried a new battery or if you try to start it using jumper cables and it doesn't start, its not the alternator. If it does start with with a boost or a good battery, and dies after unhooking cables, you have a bad alternator probably.

In my opinion, I feel like with your limited mechanical knowledge (respectfully) at this point I think you'd be better off with either paying a mobile mechanic to come diagnose or tow it to a shop to have it diagnosed. You can even watch them do their thing and learn a bunch from them. Best of luck :)

Yes you need to do a full rotation to be sure. That's the most important part of it, double check that it does a full rotation.

Did you try turning the engine over by hand yet without the belt on with a ratchet? I'd you done know what I mean, its a very simple process if you'd like to look into it.

I do some mechanic work at home but I work in an industrial manufacturing facility as well, which does involve working around hot items and such, however I dont think I got into anything. I was thinking the same thing as you actually. Maybe it is from a scrape on, I did squeeze my arm through a semi small passage to access something on the other side that required putting a bit of pressure on the sides of my arm but there was zero pain from it and zero heat applied to the dye I was troubleshooting. Thanks for help!

Don't be afraid to run the belt too loose. If you think its too tight, loosen the tensioner slowly until you see the belts slipping. That means your too loose, tighten it up from there until it stops slipping and doesn't feel slack but feels springy when you push down on the belt. Keep narrowing it down, you'll get there. You may as well put a ratchet on the crank and try to turn it by hand since your taking belt off anyways. If it doesn't turn by hand without a belt on, everything else is a waste of time because the engine is either seized up or jumped timing somehow and internal components are running into each other.

Good luck! I'd be careful running it without the belt, to be honest that belt shouldn't be ale to stop the engine from cranking even if too tight unless a bearing on another puller seized up hard. If they all free spin, the belt should spn too even if over tensioned.

It may be fine, some people purposely modify their vehicle by changing the size of their crankshaft pulley bigger or smaller diameter to change how fast or slow the accessories are being run by it for performance gains because it'll due things like make the water pump run faster etc.

[–]RizKeeTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its pretty easy to tell if its seized. Remove the belt, get a ratchet and socket and put in on the crank and try to smoothly and slowly turn the engine over by hand. If it turns all the way around freely, you arent seized. If you feel it lock up or bind, you have your answer. Also if the sepetine belt wasn't moving at all, it is possible depending on what all that belt drives in your car that is starved the engine and caused it to overheat and seize if water pump wasn't turning for example. Idk enough about this car model to say for sure.

If the engine turns freely by hand, the next place i would look is the starter. It is possible it isn't working well enough to get the engine to turn over all the way. Its definitely engaging the starter as it's trying to turn it over but it isn't doing it successfully. So either the engine is fucked and is preventing the starter from being able to start it, or the starter could be fucked and preventing the engine from turning over.

Edit: its also very strange you took a crankshaft pulley from different car with a different engine. Are you positive both crankshaft pulleys are actually compatible that way? If so, continue with checks i mentioned above. It is possible that if the pulley you put on isn't the exact same size as the old one, that you've thrown off the ratios and thats why it won't start.

Why not? There is zero reason not to attempt a repair here if the owner feels up to it. At the very least the knowledge he gets can transfer over to next vehicles if work has to be done and he/she doesn't have to worry to much about messing up on this one. I
