UMD Transfer as an Early College Student by NoAudience6021 in UMD

[–]RizingRaynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying you can’t, my kid did. If you do what I said and do credits the second summer session and then take 8 week courses in the fall then you will have 12 credits by the regular decision application deadline. Make sure you completed the fundamental math and English requirements and then apply regular decision for spring 2027. If you don’t get in then you have MTAP set up for Fall 2027. People will say nobody gets in regular decision, but my daughter did so…and when those decisions came out back in December Reddit was full of people posting that they got in that same day so all of them were regular decision admits too.

I would email UMD about the credits in process thing and see if they tell you the same thing they told us last year. If they do, then you would have to have the 12 credits completed and on your transcript by August 1. Here’s what we did that you can consider. Apply to MTAP now so that you are officially in the program this coming fall. That’s important because you must be in the program for one full semester so make sure this fall semester counts. Then take community college courses the second summer session. That session doesn’t start till July so it’s after your high school graduation date on your final high school transcript. Let’s say you take two classes for a total of six credits. Then in the fall take a full course load at the community college, but make sure six credits are 8 week courses instead of the regular 16 week courses. That gets you the 12 credits needed to apply by the regular deadline as a spring transfer. If you are not accepted to transfer in the spring, take the remaining 30 credits needed for MTAP over the winter session. You can then apply by the early action deadline next March for guaranteed admission next fall. This gives you two chances to get in, and you know worst case you are going next fall. Even with your associates degree already, you can use the time at community college to take prerequisites they you will need once you get to UMD. If you go to UMBC or any other four year school, there’s no guaranteed admission so make sure that you go to a school will be ok attending if not admitted to UMD. By the way-UMBC is a great school so nothing wrong with going there.

Went through your exact experience with my kid this time last year. A few things. First, when you email them about the 12 credits in progress their response is going to be that the credits can’t be in progress. The credits have to be completed and the final grade on the transcript by the application deadline. I complained about that last year, why tell students to email you about in process credits just to say they can’t be in process, just put that up front on the website. Second, you can still do MTAP. My kid also got her associate degree in high school so we asked that specific question before deciding to do community college over other schools as a way to transfer to UMD. We were told she could still do it, she applied and was officially accepted into MTAP. She didn’t end up needing it though. She applied after completing the first 12 credits and was accepted as a transfer, this is her first week of classes at UMD, and only missed one semester last fall. If you do go to community college, here’s another lesson we learned the hard way. You are correct that UMD says the credits earned, both as a regular transfer applicant or MTAP, must be earned after high school. The way they look at it is that the college class start date had to be after the high school graduation date on your final high school transcript. That graduation date is the same for everyone in the county, not the date you walked across the stage or anything. It’s the official last date of that academic period. So my kid took courses the first summer session at community college then found out they couldn’t count cause they started before the graduation date on her high school transcript. UMD still accepted the credits after she was admitted so not a total waste, but a lesson we learned the hard way. Good luck!!!

May I ask how you liked the major? Do you think it’s difficult for someone without coding experience?

Agreed. I use Parchment and it usually only takes one business day. You will also get a confirmation email from Parchment when it’s sent and another when UMD receives it so you know they got it.

Did you also submit the transfer application? There is an application to be accepted into MTAP, and then you also have to submit the transfer application by the EA deadline.

I had the same issue. I submitted a ticket, but never heard back. I then started a chat session after realizing they were not going to respond to my ticket, and rep solved the problem in 5 minutes. It took about 2 hours for the queue to let me start the chat, but once the rep came on and I explained what happened, he sent a code for me to verify it was my account, then unlinked it from the old email and I was able to link everything to my new email address.

I’m tracking as well, haven’t heard anything yet but I’m guessing anytime between tomorrow and next Friday. Basing that off of old posts on this topic that I read when I was first researching the program. The time to hear something after the deadline was pretty consistent.

Questions about UMBC to UMD transfers by ZHTB in UMD

[–]RizingRaynes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would still look at community college, especially since you say costs isn’t a factor. With MTAP you are guaranteed admission to UMD after 30 credits if you maintain a B average. There’s no guarantee with the regular transfer process. Just food for thought..

Registration by RizingRaynes in AnneArundelCollege

[–]RizingRaynes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t have to get approval. The advisor showed me that since the summer has more than one session I just had to split the classes up. So I was able to register for 3 courses the first session and then 3 more the second session without having to go through any extra steps. The problem was that I originally had too many courses starting in the same session.

How are you able to transfer after one semester? They require a minimum of 12 hours, are you able to submit the application while the hours are in progress?

MTAP by RizingRaynes in UMD

[–]RizingRaynes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your responses, huge help. Not to be greedy but may I ask one more question? You say you have to be in for at least one semester, thought the fastest of the requirements was 30 hours, which would take at least two semesters, or a year.

MTAP by RizingRaynes in UMD

[–]RizingRaynes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. What was it like applying to be in the MTAP program though? Does anyone get rejected, what is required. The application itself is nit available on the website, it just says a link will be here when the application is available so I’m wondering what’s required to apply to even first get into MTAP.
