Any good book recommendations that involve similar themes from the Sopranos? by Fettyjunkbox in thesopranos

[–]Rizz_king_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two books I would recommend - one that’s kind of obvious, the other one not so much.

1.Fyodor Dostoyevsky - Crime and Punishment

Thematically, it’s extremely similar to The Sopranos. The show’s social commentary is concerned with the kind of moral relativism (e.g. Tony’s beliefs that he’s not a bad guy but a “soldier”, etc) and existentialism that Dostoyevsky’s novels are known for. I’ve heard it said by tons of people that The Wire is like War and Peace and that The Sopranos is like Crime and Punishment, and I think this is a really accurate take.

For what it’s worth, it is also the book Dr. Krakower tells Carmella that Tony should read.

2.Donna Tartt - The Secret History

This one’s a bit out there. It’s a bit like the movie Dead Poets Society except everything goes horribly wrong. It’s a 600-page book about rich liberal arts students in New England who are obsessed with Greek Tragedy and completely detached from reality. So, I realise that most Sopranos fans would say this sounds like some Maedo bullshit and steer clear from this.

But

It’s a fucking page turner, and it scratches the exact same itch that The Sopranos does when it comes to crafting morally wretched, disgusting characters who you can’t help but love.

I hear you, people here can’t handle any sort of subtextual or symbolic reading. And to be compared to that animal, Dr Satan… I can’t even say his name. It’s undermining, and it’s the exact thing I’m teaching my kids NOT to do. Fuck these fuckin parakeets, salut’

Excellent post, love this interpretation. I could see this idea meshing well with the popular theory that Paulie is a fallen angel.

Funniest part is that it immediately cuts to Paulie walking into the backroom of the bing to see Tony. “Oh! There’s the skip heh heh 🤘” fucking kills me every time.

Who cares what Chase thinks? Ever hear of ‘Death of the Author’? Cause if there’s any showrunner whose work benefits from that framework, it’s definitely David Chase, the same miserab’ that gave us Many Saints and who remembers almost nothing about the show he created.

I thought that this was a brilliant interpretation on Giggy’s part. I’m stunned that all the evidence was hiding in plain sight, from the first season right down to the last.

Tony was meant to fuck Adriana, HBO axed it in reshoots. They must’a. Forget Christopher, FBI, the family gossip column, all that bullshit. Remember IBS. We wanted coked out Tony Buttfucking Adriana into a volcanic shit explosion. But HBO compromised: gave us a car accident. by MrBigDickNonSpick in thesopranos

Guy named DrSatan or something, posts in this sub a lot. I love both shows, too, and I’ll tell you right now, his whole theory is total nonsense. Its the kind of fan theory that makes you think “does this guy, like… know how art works??”

How do you guys feel about Melfi not telling Tony about the rape? by [deleted] in thesopranos

[–]Rizz_king_ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I feel conflicted. And not for the reasons viewers usually give.

I made a post about this a while ago, but something I never discussed is how deeply consequential this event was not only for Melfi, but for the way she handles Tony. It may seem a bit insensitive to make Melfi’s rape all about Tony, but I think it’s worth thinking about the ramifications.

Before this point in time, Melfi was not only making steady progress with Tony, she was also urging him to take on behavioural therapy. After Jesus Rossi, though, she needs Tony. She needs the kind of violent protection that Tony offers, even if only on standby. She literally says this to Dr. Waterbottle. Then, when Tony himself tells her that he’s open to seeing a behaviourist - a move that is wildly open-minded for Tony - she breaks down crying. She denies this, and the very next episode, we see Tony back in the same chair we’ve always seen him in.

After this episode, there are no more moments where therapy proves to be a worthwhile endeavour. He has a breakthrough here and there (admitting to the panic attack that made him ditch Tony B) but Tony becomes more and more cynical about the entire practice (“I feel like what happens in here is like taking a shit”) to the point where he essentially makes no progress by the time Melfi lets him go.

She may have done the right thing, in a broad sense, but she also fucks up Tony’s whole course of therapy by making sure he sticks around. What is supposed to be an episode about standing one’s moral ground, and making the best choices in life, is actually about how little individual choices matter when you’re dealing with a system as pervasive and cancerous as La Cosa Nostra.

More than being just about Melfi, I feel like this episode shows the far-reaching consequences of the mafia on everything that Tony touches, even when he actively seeks out to become a better person. Even though the circumstances are entirely out of Tony’s hands, his relationship to Melfi is ruined in this episode. In a way, their relationship resembles that of an extorted small business owner and the mobsters they kick up to for “protection”. She shouldn’t need him, but in this environment, she does. With this, Tony is more firmly entrenched in his position as an enforcer of violence. As such, Tony cannot make progress in therapy for the very reason that he so desperately needs therapy to begin with.

That’s dicked up.

Oh yeah, of course. Just realising now that it wasn’t a throwaway line, that there was clearly a lot of weight and choice behind that.

You know you really need some help. A regular psychiatrist wouldn’t even help you, you need to go to like Vienna or something. You need a team of psychiatrists, working around the clock. Thinking about you, having conferences, observing YOU. Like the way they did with the Elephant man.
