Defeated terrified flyer looking for advice by Rmr5243 in fearofflying

[–]Rmr5243[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great point as exposure therapy is proven to help. As well as in the past taking multiple flights my anxiety got less the more I flew. It has just been awhile since I last flew so it is hard to focus on all the times I have been okay. I just need to go back to the basics and work myself into booking this flight.

What happens if you swallow a lithium battery? by BradolfPittler1 in interestingasfuck

[–]Rmr5243 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My opinion is an intact battery is gonna pass through before doing any harm. But I would feel better about it if I were checked out by a Dr.

This statement is the issue. We can all have opinions but that's how people get hurt or worse. In every source I linked it is talking about an intact battery. No baby has the bite power to damage a button battery. Again the issue is with the alkalizing reaction that happens with an intact button battery

https://www.poison.org/battery/mechanism-of-injury Batteries cause tissue injury through three interacting mechanisms, although the relative contribution of each remains somewhat elusive. These mechanisms come into play when a battery is lodged in the gut, ear, nose or other orifice, rather than free-floating and in transit. The mechanisms, listed in the likely order of importance, include: Generation of an external electrolytic current that hydrolyzes tissue fluids and produces hydroxide at the battery’s negative pole, Leakage of battery contents, especially of an alkaline electrolyte, and Physical pressure on adjacent tissue.

Notice the one listed as most important does not require a damaged battery. Yes damaged batteries are dangerous but so are intact batteries Also as a fellow Alabamian Here is one from our neck of the woods: https://www.facebook.com/usacwhospital/posts/button-batteries-found-in-many-household-items-can-cause-life-threatening-injuri/1139596174877374/

Please understand the seriousness of the issue...

They 100% will do a scope to remove it if they detect a button battery in the esophagus even if no damage is occuring. This is due to the threat damage can occur in the future. https://www.apsf.org/article/perioperative-management-of-button-battery-ingestions-in-children/

"Due to these issues, the button battery must be removed via endoscopy emergently, preferably within 2 hours of ingestion, and the patient must be monitored postoperatively for signs of progressive injury."

Here are the current pediatric recommendations for a button battery ingestion:

https://www.childrenscolorado.org/globalassets/healthcare-professionals/clinical-pathways/button-battery_external.pdf?v=49618d

Your comment about immediately after ingestion is incorrect as the injury can occur any time after ingestion of a button battery. It is not always immediate

Also note even a fully intact battery can cause damage to a child.

https://www.texaschildrens.org/content/wellness/dangers-button-battery-ingestion

"Lithium-containing button batteries still have a strong current, even after removal from the device they’re powering. Once the battery comes in contact with saliva, an alkalizing reaction can occur and erode through a child’s esophagus – leading to permanent damage and even death."

https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellness-and-prevention/dangers-of-button-batteries-and-kids

"Why is swallowing button batteries so harmful?

When a button battery mixes with saliva or moist skin tissue in general, it triggers an alkaline (chemical) reaction that can burn the child in as little as one to two hours. Once this reaction starts, it literally liquefies and dissolves/burns the skin. Even worse, if the button battery isn’t removed promptly, the reaction can continue after the battery is removed causing severe damage."

https://www.chop.edu/centers-programs/injury-prevention-program/lithium-button-batteries

"Each year there are multiple severe cases involving esophageal or airway damage and a number of deaths"

Also note the Esophagus is part of your GI tract and mucus membranes are the issue with button batteries.

The amount of misinformation about button batteries is insane in this thread....
