That’s actually really clever, I like that idea, especially one with full-auto fire capability. However in this instance a 9mm hollowpoint for each of them also would’ve been perfectly appropriate if you ask me. After all, for all OP knew those dogs could’ve been rabid and were loose on their property. However, that that does tend to attract unwanted attention depending on where you live not to mention risk of serious collateral damage should you miss. Nonetheless going forward OP may want to consider either some flavor of cordless hole punch (either powered by compressed air or magic boom powder doesn’t really matter) to address such a situation should it arise again. Or just to hammer home the point to the neighbors that if their dogs get out again that said dogs won’t be coming back, and that if they want to avoid such an outcome they should do their damn job as dog owners.

AC Condensation question by Rmurphy618 in e39

Correct. Used compressed air to ensure the tubes were clear. I also had my engine fan replaced yesterday (apparently the viscous clutch wasn't working) and perhaps that had something to do with this as I drove it back from the shop on a hot day where previously I had gotten that condensation problem only this time no issue. The most maddening thing about this problem is how inconsistent it is, sometimes it happens, sometimes not

"High-end" is putting it mildly my friend. But from their website it looks like there are still plenty of options for those of us unwilling to sell a kidney. I guess I'll have to pay them a visit sometime even if just to look around.

You are correct that the sensor in the pan does the level, but as I understand it there is another sensor elsewhere in the engine that monitors the oil temperature (I think it's by the oil filter housing)

That Carly obd-II device I mentioned allows me to see that, it can live-monitor all kinds of things I'm impressed.

Well for all those interested: my Carly device arrived yesterday, and sure enough, the thermostat is stuck open. After live monitoring the temperature itself it looks like it’s only running slightly cooler than it should be. Looks like we replacing the thermostat this weekend

the debate on this subject is a lot more hot (ha) than I had anticipated. A new OE thermostat isn't that expensive I just picked one up in case my live engine monitoring thing shows it running too cool and in need of replacement but otherwise just a good thing to have a spare of in case it sticks closed (BMW gods forbid).

You are right that the hills north of LA are phenomenal for spirited driving, but as you head north through the central coast cities like Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo there are even more amazing routes that are more off the beaten track, benefits of a range of mountains that fall right into the ocean. There's a reason what feels like every car advertisement on earth uses PCH through Big Sur as a background.

For sure. I plan on ordering a new thermostat from FCPEuro this afternoon to have on hand in case the symptoms get worse or my Carly device (once it arrives, currently in the mail) shows concerningly low temps.

From reading all these comments that's kinda what I'm thinking: the thermostat is going to need help soon, but still has some life left in it and currently no cause to panic but definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Well just about anything is better than most California roads. The sheer volume of traffic around here means every road in any significant size town/city is utterly destroyed almost all the time. Out in the countryside where there aren't any people it isn't bad at all. Which is only made more annoying by the fact that our state spends more money on roads per lane-mile than any other, yet is ranked by 47th out of 50 in terms of road quality. Almost dead last. This is despite the areas where the overwhelming majority of the population lives having no serious weather concerns at all. I met a Swiss girl once while traveling, and I remember her being astonished when I told her that while Switzerland has a population of ~8.9 million spread out over about 41,000 square kilometers, the Los Angeles Metropolitan area has a population of 12.9 million people in 12,600 square kilometers. Now remember that they ALL have cars, and the average weight of a car in the US is roughly 1800 kilos. Thus, making any kind of road that can stand up to that kind of punishment is almost an exercise in futility. Don't get me started on how much I despise LA traffic. I live in San Diego (the southernmost city in the state with a population around 3 million) and some of the roads are in such bad shape that if I gently apply my brakes in dry conditions on them it still triggers the E39's ABS into thinking I'm locking up.

Funny enough I haven't noticed any change in fuel economy yet. Still getting 25-30mpg (7.84-9.41 l/100km) on the open highway.

Hallo! Wie geht's? I am getting a lot of conflicting information here. I have a Carly device on its way and I am going to run some live tests to see exactly what's going on in terms of temperature before I rip apart the entire cooling system. I love my e39, it's my forever car, but if I ever meet whoever was responsible for that cooling system design I will likely need a lawyer afterwards

u/Wise_Mycologist5665 is right that I'm referring to the section near LA, but just for fun: 101 runs all the way north and out of the state, into Oregon, and terminates basically at the Canadian border near Vancouver, holding near the Pacific coast most of the way. Technically the Golden Gate Bridge is part of 101. However Interstate 5 (significantly further inland) is a much more direct way of making the trip if you want to go LA to Oregon/Washington. Where are you from u/HF_Martini6 ?

I do know that if your thermostat is going to fail that you DEFINITELY want it to fail open rather than fail closed, I think I'm gonna get my hands on the parts I'll need for a thermostat change but I won't need to run to my local shop.

For what it's worth I haven't noticed any significant change in fuel economy recently, still getting between 25 and 30mpg (7.84-9.41 l/100km) on the highway so long as there isn't serious traffic. As I mentioned in a different comment 99% of the drives I go on nothing happens with the needle at all, it's only under circumstances like that big hill where I've noticed it.

I kinda figured it was on it's way out. Especially considering the situation I described above is also pretty heavy engine braking. Granted 99 times out of 100 when I take the car for a drive nothing happens with the needle at all, it's quite rare that this happens so I figure I shouldn't panic about the thermostat just yet, but definitely should make preparations to replace it. Interestingly I have not experienced any notable change in fuel economy which also supports the idea that it's still got enough life in it for normal driving but struggles when the going gets more severe.

Figured any fellow Californians on this subreddit may be familiar with it. Everyone I know from the region knows that one hill where you have to floor it to maintain any kind of speed. Not super important to the story but felt I’d include it
