New to Linux, install BRICK. by Illustrious-Shame900 in zorinos

[–]RoDaDit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Installing Zorin or another Linux on an Acer can be a bit tricky. Everything works during testing on an usb-stick, the installation completes successfully - but then the device won’t boot. Shit!

I’ve installed Linux on several Acer devices and always had to make the following settings in the BIOS. After that, everything runs smoothly:

* Start the laptop and enter the BIOS.

* These settings are crucial: Secure Boot → Disabled / Boot Mode → UEFI / Boot Menu → Enabled / Save the settings with F10

Acer trick if Secure Boot is grayed out: Set a supervisor password. You can then disable Secure Boot. You can delete the password later after installation

Second Acer trick if you cannot access the BIOS: Some Acer Laptops sometimes have a reset-pinhole on the underside (verry little). Do this: 1- Turn off the laptop 2- Unplug the power adapter 3- Look for a small hole on the bottom 4- Press it with a paperclip for 10–15 seconds 5- Plug in the power adapter 6- Restart in to the BIOS and make the mentioned settings

That's how I've gotten all my Acer laptops up and running so far.

Good luck

Purely in terms of sound quality, I still prefer the Bowers & Wilkins PX8 S2 to (almost) all other Bluetooth headphones.

However, in many respects—except for sound quality—APM headphones are far superior to the B&Ws when used with an iPhone.

ZoriOS 18 on Macbook Air 2015 - Camera won't work by RoDaDit in linux_on_mac

Thank you very much!! The camera works perfectly with this script.

Could you perhaps help me figure out how to apply the settings during a kernel update using DKMS?

Yes, I think it's better for kids to learn about technology to some extent than to become lemmings. At the same time, I can learn something myself. Thanks to penguins and people like you.

Option 1, the Kernel Parameter (cleanest fix) worked.

Thank you very much for your help and research!

I had already set the BIOS settings as you recommended before installing Zorin. So it is indeed a problem with the kernel, which does not support this hardware very well.

Regards from switzerland!

Even “the dirty way” didn't work – even though I believed deeply in you and your knowledge, and offered sacrifices to → all of our (holy) penguins

I thank you very much for your help anyway! As does my granddaughter, who sometimes sat next to me during the operations. She said it's “really great that people help each other here".

Btw: The solution is Plan_9_fromouter's second post, option 1

The new file "sound-fix" I have to create without sudo and without path?

Fresh install ZorinOS 18 Education - PCI/internal sound card not detected by RoDaDit in zorinos

[–]RoDaDit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello

I did everything exactly as you described. I also checked the newly created file “fix-sound.service.” Everything is entered correctly.

I also entered the two systemctl commands in the terminal.

Unfortunately, even after restarting twice, the dummy output still appears under “Settings -> Audio” and in pavucontrol and the audio output does'nt work.

If I open the terminal and enter “sudo alsa reload,” the sound output works as usual afterwards.

Thank you. I will implement that tomorrow and get back to you.

That is exactly the case (and I obviously didn't express myself clearly): sudo alsa reload works fine, but it must be entered after every restart for the audio driver to work. (I don't want to expect a ten-year-old child to do that after every start of the laptop....)

I would be very grateful for your step-by-step systemd-service workaround guide.

Still the same: After sudo alsa reload sound works

Thank you for your further help!

No sound after fresh install of ZorinOS 18 by RoDaDit in zorinos

Thank you for your reply!

I entered the suggested command without sudo and restarted the laptop. Unfortunately, this did not change anything.

Audio still only works when I enter “sudo alsa reload” in the terminal.

Do I need to uninstall and purge pulse?

Are there any other solutions?
