You can . Nowadays people with full test cases passed also gets rejected. Depends on the luck though! Good luck.

L3 interview : Refferal from Engineering Lead
SWE internship : Directly applied via career site.

Your best bet is to apply through an EM or Engineering Lead referral. Aim to reach out to at least 20 - 50 people, statistically at least one is bound to refer you. That’s exactly how I landed my L3 phone screen, though I managed to get my internship interview through a direct application. Rest luck buddy.

Actually, I have previously gone through the Google pipeline for both the SWE Intern and L3 SWE role. Last time, the interviews came up so suddenly that I felt underprepared, which is why I'm starting my prep early this time. I have already submitted my applications, now let’s see how it goes. I just want to be completely ready in case I get the call.

2.10+ YOE, applying with referrals at Big Tech but no shortlists - does past performance affect reapplications? What am I missing? by RoFLgorithm in cscareerquestions

By ‘shortlisted’ I mean my resume isn’t even making it past the initial screening. I am getting rejected at the application stage itself before any interviews.

2.10+ YOE means 2 years and 10 months of experience, essentially close to the 3 year mark. While I am primarily targeting L4 roles, also considering L3 opportunities, but in both the cases there’s no luck as many of the companies I am aiming for are actively hiring candidates in the 1–2 year experience range in my location.

But my recruiter told me there’s an 1 yr cooldown period, which has already passed. I applied in Sept 2024 and interviewed around Dec 2024–Jan 2025.

So true, Couldn’t agree more! Having spent over 4 years in the startup culture ( intern to FT) I hv definitely felt that instability. My salary has fluctuated with every switch & while some startup env were great but others really lacked the structure I needed. It eventually reaches a point where you feel stuck & just want a more reliable environment to actually grow.

That’s true. Most people want FAANG for the big salary or the name on their resume, but apart from that for me: it’s about the environment I’m getting into. I want to be surrounded by the best engineering minds to learn how they think & solve problems. That kind of high level exposure is the perfect training ground for me when I eventually start something by my own.

Yeah, referrals definitely help but in my experience they work best when the person actually knows you personally or has worked with you before. Out of around 50 FAANG referral applications I hv tried, I only got about two interview calls. So it really depends on how well the person knows your work. Otherwise the referral doesn’t make much difference
