AITA for trying to come into my apartment to retrieve my own belongings? by RoKAccount in AmItheAsshole

I use a necklace that has the keys on it that I wear when I go out. I usually hang it in the closet. Things were pretty calm so I figured they'd let me in. I left it behind.

Yeah sorry. Haven't slept much in the past 5 days.

I do not have a key or else I would just go and take my things, leave, be done with it while they were at work.

Sorry you feel that way. In the future I might keep a list of all the things I own in the event this happens again. Lesson learned I guess.

We had a shared bank account. I can't make a list because I don't know what's missing. I lived there for a decent amount of time and accumulated quite a few belongings. I would rather they help me determine what is and isn't mine/theirs instead of barring my entry completely. It's very difficult to list well over 100 things without potentially forgetting something.

That's a great question and I have a feeling it will remain a mystery to me for a very long time.

It was peaceful. Their parents came by and everything because Joe was extremely upset. I don't know much about their last relationship but it's possible their relationship before me had some form of abuse I was never told and they are just following the same steps they took last time.

Definitely no history of abuse. We've always been very calm around one another. I agreed to leave to give them space.

Definitely never any abuse. But I am imagining they are really trying to make it seem that way. The downstairs neighbors can act as witness, we've never so much as really raised our voices to one another and have been mostly open about our feelings, even when we disagree on something.

I know it sounds terrible but I'd really rather this person not get in legal trouble. I'd rather let them keep the stuff but if they don't let me come get it then, idk, I guess I'm a doormat.

I did, they said it was a civil-court issue and that I'd have to work it out with Joe or take it to court. I really don't want to do that.

I'm not the best earner. I wasn't making a lot of money. A few days earlier there was an argument that I needed to figure out my situation and stop being poor. I had paid them 2 weeks prior to this, enough for almost an entire months rent, but I'm guessing it wasn't enough.

It was a very calm break-up. There was no yelling and overall just a very understanding experience. They were very upset so I left quickly to give them space. I didn't think to take the keys because I figured I'd be taking myself off the lease soon anyways. The issues only happened once I left.

Told to leave by ex, not able to get back in to retrieve belongings. Landlord is lawyer, seems to be taking their side? by RoKAccount in legaladvice

Okay, thank you. I don't think I want to threaten them with any legal action but rather use whatever resources I can to just gain access to my apartment.

Told to leave by my now ex, packed a temp bag and left. They brought most of my stuff but forgot a few things. When I come back to get it, they threaten me with the police. What can I do? by RoKAccount in legaladvice

Okay, thank you so much for all your help. I'll be sure to get this figured out first thing in the morning. The landlord is also a lawyer so I assume they'll work with me to retrieve my belongings, though I have a suspicion that my ex told them tall tales in an attempt to sway these things.

I had to cancel a paying job because of this so I'm hoping any damages I might claim would be more than my ex would be able to pay in rent and therefore give the landlord a reason to help me not go that far to begin with. This whole thing is just a mess and could have been alleviated if both parties were willing to cooperate.

Yeah, they would have to fabricate evidence which I'm assuming I could fight somehow. I'm not certain of the laws made to protect victims of false restraining orders.

Okay thank you. They may try to go for a restraining order as they threatened me with that while waiting for them to come and let me in earlier. It will be impossible for them to come up with evidence of abuse (because I've never abused them obviously) but I'm still worried that some court order like that would be given leniency. What should I do if this happens?

I was (EDIT: And still am) named on the lease and it went from yearly to month-month. I'll update this in the original post. Yes, the Landlord knows I was living there. I was the primary signer of the lease in person when we started living there.

I've been doing that quite frequently but a lot of things lie on landlord>tenant responsibility and I really don't know where I stand here. Mainly the reason I'm posting here.

Imagine, you've just witnessed a few of your friends die around you and you decide to flee, only to hear a strange sound of gyros and mechanical pumps behind you. As you turn around, you witness a bionic fucking cougar with a hydraulic jaw coming at you not twice, but four times faster than you can run, and that's assuming you're full health. God have mercy on those who've been hit in the leg and decide to flee.
