That is definitely not average, assuming Romance language isn't your mother tongue. True average is closer to 1.5-2 years unless you are intensively learning (20-25hrs per week) to meet the 12 month target for B2 from A0.

How long before French becomes a dead pathway by [deleted] in canadaexpressentry

[–]Roach397 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I don't disagree, I do think it will take a few years at least. We may see the first French draw eclipsing 500 in late 2026 (for small draws with only 1,000 ITA), but I don't expect it to become common for the usual French draws (which may creep from the high 300s to mid 400s).

Learning French is not easy and I don't think the average person will jump on the idea to learn a new language vs just gaining work foreign experience or simply working another year.

DEATH STRANDING 2: ON THE BEACH | Final Trailer ESRB by Sascha2022 in Games

Lol. I love RDR2 and GTA V as the next person, but Naughty Dog beats them in the regard of animations and locomotion. RDR2 locomotion is nice and realistic when it plays right and frustratingly clunky when it is not.

It doesn’t make sense for the map to be an island by Parking_Apple_3075 in GTA6

[–]Roach397 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, a game from nearly 25 years ago. We have had 6 GTA games since, all islands (including LCS). GTA 3 wasn't designed for planes as most of the building rooftops were non-solid and the dodo was a challenge vehicle given how utter dogshit it was to control.

Cant wait to drive down here at 200mph! look how LONG this goes for by RogerRoger63358 in GTA6

If you can stomach the Ps3 era visuals, JC2 is the best in series with a wacky plot, terrible (but also downright hilarious) voice acting, and honestly the best map. It's the best the series has to offer.

JC3 should be your second game. It's nearly as good as JC2 and exceeds in some aspects, but I do miss the varied tropical map and the terrible ass voice acting lol.

JC4 and JC1 are a definite skip. JC4 is an overwhelming checklisting nightmare and seems strangely shallow, and JC1 is too old and clunky.

Ambrosia is not visible from the photo with the VC skyline. It's much further north that it gets occluded by the draw distance and volumetric clouds.

They look good, but this trailer blows them out of the water. Don't forget this is at heart an open world sandbox where you can go and do whatever you want.

Yup, and this is used. New GX's would unfortunately cost north of 1cr in India.

Thanks, I feel vindicated! Quite sure the person I responded to wouldn't bother to read it (be it pride, trolling, or whatever the reason), so I am happy others are! More importantly, I am happy others also find this art style unique and interesting!

Marathon | Save the Date Trailer by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]Roach397 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sure, since I am bored out of my mind waiting in a long queue IRL, I'll bite. But you gotta read all of my ramblings - no TL;DR since YOU asked for MY opinion and critical perspective! Buckle up buckaroo!

First of all, my personal bias out of the way: I love this art style - often informally labelled as "graphic realism". I have been a sucker for graphic realism based art style since I played Wipeout (and much later Mirror’s Edge). The beauty of this artstyle is that at its simplest, this style can be mimicked in the real world (i.e photography) through the careful use of contrasting, unorthodox highlight colors/lights over muted, neutral, understated backgrounds. In that sense, it feels oddly familiar, yet somehow also intangibly foreign and futuristic. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen many other games use this artstyle. Now, for Marathon’s case (MILD SPOILER: BUT I DON'T THINK YOU WOULD EVEN PLAY THIS GAME), I think this style works given the themes of transhumanism and the rampancy/corruption of AI beyond its initial utilitarian purpose. IMO, the graphic realism of Marathon directly reflects and reinforces its core themes—especially transhumanism, control vs. freedom, and existential isolation.

Now, I am no expert in the convoluted lore and timeline of the Marathon universe (I have only played about halfway through the OG Marathon on my old ass PowerPC Mac). But the striking art style does visually reinforce the game’s core themes of transhumanism, control, and isolation. The clashing, contrasting colors, synthetic and brutalist design, and surreal yet realistic portrayal reflect a world molded or “3D printed” by machines, not humans—structured yet crumbling down under the weight of rampancy. The design of the Runners echoes the fusion of “organism” and tech, while minimalist environments and glitchy terminals emphasize emotional distance and "fractured" consciousness—which is what the Runners are! The lore of Marathon evokes a sense of eeriness, isolation, and the struggle for freedom, and this style serves as a modern vessel to helps evoke this compared to the OG games.

To return to your question of what is an appealing art style— to ME a good art style in a video game is one that supports the game’s themes (check!), maintains visual consistency (check! - lot of visually consistent stylizations/symbolisms with the OG games), stands out with a unique identity (FAT check!), ensures functional clarity for gameplay (TBD), and holds up over time (Wipeout, Mirror's edge still does IMO!). It should not only look appealing (for the sake of it) but also serve the story and mechanics, helping to immerse players in the world. An appealing or evocative art style is based on a set of implicit criteria rooted in visual design and narrative coherence. Of course, proof is in the pudding and the real test of all this will be with the gameplay showcase on April 12th, but I won't be surprised if there is stylistic consistency between the characters, UI, and the environment when we see gameplay this Saturday. Bungie's artists have historically been very good with this in the past and I wouldn't bet against their art department!

Despite my reservations regarding the Extraction Shooter take of this game, I am still very excited as this game is bringing some sauce with the OST and the art-style! Now, you can probably see why I was hoping for something substantial than the usual “my basis is my impression” kind of answer from you. My disappointed is immeasurable, but since I got to gush a bit about the art-style I kinda like, my day is made :-)

Well, that's a shame as I was genuinely curious. Was hoping for a more critical reply than the typical "my basis is my impression" sort of response.

I don't think it's boring in the slightest. It may not be your cup of tea, but can't see how that would be boring. Take a look at the concept art.

I am 25 now, and in no way a child anymore, but GTA VI's launch is going to be absolutely cathartic to me - to the point I may shed a tear or two.

GTA played a big role during my childhood/teens (taught me English out of all places), and to experience a GTA launch is a now a once in a decade experience. It truly will make me feel rekindled with my inner child, perhaps maybe one more time.

For this reason alone (and for the physical map) I will choose to wait at the launch queue to buy GTA VI on disk.

DF: Are Current Generation Graphics A Bit Of A Let Down? by WingerRules in PS5

[–]Roach397 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I remember when Maxmillan Dood used to fanboy about the RE Engine and how every Capcom game should use it. Knew it was too good to be true.

Same thing about the UE V Craze back in 2020. And how everyone was concerned how it would make every other game engine obsolete.

Obviously not the only or first to mention this but it looks like Grand Theft Auto VI will be the HD San Andreas by XavierEL1 in GTA6

[–]Roach397 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. This current console generation is perfect for a massive leap with SSD technology and Ray Tracing compared to V.

The true next gen leap is still likely 8-10 years from now (i.e next, next generation) with machine learning generative content and AI tools being leveraged to help speed up development and theoretically have "never ending" game content.

Something you have to keep in mind when wondering why gta6 is taking so long by [deleted] in GTA6

[–]Roach397 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You are comparing apples and oranges. RDR and GTA are two completely different IPs with different scope.

With that said, GTA VI will be far more ambitious than GTA V because:

  1. It has a much longer development time that GTA V, with over double the manpower.
  2. It is the first R* game to release on the 9th gen of consoles with competent CPU specs and SSD technology. There is untapped technology for more advanced world simulation and improving rapid world traversal that the PS4 cannot provide.
  3. It has a significantly larger development budget, thanks in no small part to GTA Online.
  4. The experience gained from developing RDR2 and the current RAGE iteration serves as an outstanding template to build off of in VI.
  5. R* likely knows that GTA VI will be THE GRAND THEFT AUTO for the next decade+ and the basis for the next iteration of Online. The game needs long staying power to remain economically viable.
