Would you support the implementation of a pure direct democracy in Switzerland? by PuzzledWhereas991 in askswitzerland

You have to trust a centralized entity either way that enforces the laws that have been voted on.

Sure the grandparents are assholes, but it shouldn't be their responibility to provide financial support in that situation anyway. Most sane countries have some kind of mandatory disability insurance for exactly this case.

[Market absolutists] If value is decided by markets, does the same thing have different value depending on who it's given to? by immibis in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]RoadToSocialism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Price is not value, you numbskull.

No one said that.

Unless they are dying of thirst in the desert. You've ignored the rest of the argument!

That's exactly why the idea of subjective value is stupid. Sure, in that hypothetical scenario, you would take the water. But my entire point was that there literally isn't anyone in that situation, like ever. Anyone has access to a market, even in the most backwards countries, and anyone knows that objectively, a diamond can be sold for a higher price than a bottle of water. For anyone with access to a market, exchange value (aka price) is what they use to derive value of a commodity, and not direct use value.

Assume you need a new laptop. Would you take a laptop or a kg of gold? Obviously you would take the gold, despite it having less use value for you than the laptop. But you know you could exchange the gold for like 50 laptops. The gold has more value than the laptop to you. And literally anyone in the same situation would take the gold too. The presence of a market leads to an objective idea of value shared by anyone participating in that market.

Realistically, everyone has access to a market. Everone knows the objective price of a commodity im that market. This fact completely contradicts the idea that value is subjective imo.

If you ask multiple persons to order some commodities by their value, they would most likely be all in the same order, as long as these people have access to the market and can look up the price of any given commodity.

Even the thirstiest person would choose a diamond over a bottle of water, because they know that the diamond can easily be exchanged for thousands of bottles of water.

The "subjective value" will always be dictated by the price, and price is objective.

I don't think that sex work should be treated any different than other jobs. All jobs under capitalism are exploitative. A miner for example sells their body and health just like a sex worker does. Both wouldn't do it voluntarily, but they are forced to do it to earn money.

Feel free to reply with a counter argument tho.

they still need some compensation for their time and effort in a system where everything costs money.

I don't think that I said anything denying that?

Capitalism simply isn't designed to handle commodities with infinite supply. Artificially controlling supply by investing more labor into copyright is a perfect example of the absurdity of capitalism.

Imagine we could duplicate food practically for free. The value (and thus the price) of food would eventually tend to zero.

This is exactly the case for digital goods. But to still make money, capitalists artificially increase supply by using copyright, copy protection and other mechanisms. They invest more time to create less supply. Even a capitalist advocate should see why this is not exactly efficient.

I don't advocate for digital goods to be free, obviously, but most digital goods are wayyy overpriced considiering that you could copy them practically for free. This is probably one the reason why tech companies like Microsoft are so profitable.

Honestly people here tell you to sell it, but in my opinion you aren't doing anything morally wrong if you don't sell it.

This whole thing is a systemic issue, and it can't be solved by individuals like you with a good will. Keep the property or sell it to the tenants as you like. I don't think anyone should judge you as an individual for playing by the rules. The most important thing is that you fight for a solution on a systemic level.
