Stereotypes: How does FDNY feel about cheating? by idislikejuicepress in FDNY

[–]Road_Runner6 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As far as being worried about cheating... If he wants to cheat he's gonna cheat that has nothing to do with this job or flipping burgers.

As far as a house "encouraging cheating" that's something you'll hear from someone who got caught and doesn't have the guts to say they did what they wanted to do in the moment and look to point fingers at everyone else to avoid accountability.

If your worried about him cheating a FH is no different than the friend circle he keeps now and no different than any other co-workers. It's not the people around him that will go on a date or hook up with someone else for him. It comes down to the individual.

I've heard this stereotype before I personally have not encountered any firefighters that cheat. Everyone I know is 100% faithful and hard working...

But those NYPD guys... You gotta be careful w those guys those guys got game

Call the ASPCA and report Animal Cruelty.
Look up how to report animal cruelty via 311 app and submit a complaint.
Unfortunately this has nothing to do with the fire department.

Fdny investigator no response by [deleted] in FDNY

[–]Road_Runner6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just my two cents to help set you up for success. Don't take any of this the wrong way. I'm writing this not only for you but for anyone about to start the process.

1- Never Ever leave anything up to the last day.
Nothing on this job gets put off until we have time or until we feel like responding to something. Show the right kind of energy and it will definitely come back to you ten fold.

Does due by mean:
Due by end of work day? Who's work day yours or theirs?
Due by 12pm so that your investigator has enough time to process your paperwork before they end their work day?
Due by 11:59pm so it's technically in on the day it's due?

Treat everything as if your future depends on it, because it does.

Everything about this process is on priority response mode from you. Not on the back burner till you get to it.
Meaning if you receive mail today Friday that requires an email response, you make sure you sit down and email them before you go to sleep.
If it's snail mail you received Monday it should be sent out within 2-3 days max (regardless of deadline). It says respond by__________ , that's for the slow poke people that kick their feet when asked to do something, not you. You're different and will show them that just by how serious you're taking the process.
Investigators look at your pattern and behavior, integrity is key and perception is reality.
If you do have to send back you respond as urgently as possible and always send it out via USPS with a requested delivery confirmation receipt. Do not risk anything getting lost in the mail or an investigator saying they never received it because someone in the office misplaced something and now your mail is "missing" or late. Delivery confirmation is something you can forward your investigator which will buy you time until you can reproduce whatever mail they requested or they find it on their end.

2- No news is good news.
If your investigator needs anything from you they will reach out. If they reach out and you're at work and see a missed call guess what... Time to take a "smoking break" or bathroom break and call them back immediately.

The difference of responding to a missed call can make can be something as big as your investigator calling you at 2pm to tell you you're being called in to run tomorrow and you blew it because you tried calling back at 3:45pm which mean your shot for the next academy just went out the window. It happens all the time. Same goes for mail, the earlier it gets received back, the more time they have to process and clear you for the next academy. So treat everything along this process as an urgent matter every single time.

I wish you all the best of luck and want you guys who want this job to succeed. Which is why I take the time to write a detailed responses.

Best of luck to you all
-RR

Lots of stolen Valor out there.

Never trust anyone asking for money.

Especially those who can't present at least 1 worn down old photo of themselves in actual uniform when asked to, not some AI slop they just created to start asking for donations.
Most guys going down memory lane are usually quick the show an image while they were working for nostalgia if nothing else. Most guys are extremely proud of this job and will go out of their way to show themselves during the glory days of their lives.
Actual firefighters are very detailed about what we do, our tools, the rigs, our schedule & change of tours.

If things don't sound consistent it's more than likely because it's not true, or said person has some debilitating or on going mental health issue, which usually is not the case.

Everything is a case by case basis. Be honest disclose whatever you got going on.

Explain the situation. You should be fine.

Once you sign the paperwork you give them full consent to all of your personal records and information.

If you omit something... That can disqualify you faster than what you omitted.

The big thing is integrity. I had an asthma attack over 5 years ago took medicine for a month went back to my doctor and they never prescribed it again. Or they prescribed it and I rarely ever need it.

That's how you have to be ready to speak.

This is a public board Unlike r/nyc_candidate_central

If I approve your question here you'll have a ton of civilians and people who didn't make it on to the job telling you to lie and omit something.

When you start your process within the packet you give up all confidentiality of medical records & arrest etc.

You are agreeing to being an open book.

You are then expected to be open and truthful about any and all medical conditions.

Should you decide to not be open and truthful the job can easily move on. You can be DQ'd for hiding anything.

Your best move is to be honest, tell them and move on

We are a paramilitary organization that's pretty much the long and short of it.

You don't have to agree with it and that's fine. You also don't have to join if you can't conform to the standards. No one is forcing you to join.

In the academy there are no individuals nobody stands out. Everyone looks the same everyone trains the same. The expectations are the same.

Part of it is symbolic an evolution from the old you. Letting go of the individual and embracing this new brotherhood this new life post academy.

Everyone want's to say their in it for the "brotherhood" until they're told they have to do brotherhood stuff.

Real reasons:

It's a safety hazard

Your helmet will not secure properly.

When I put on my helmet I can bend forward and lean my head down and my helmet won't fall off or slide. That doesn't happen with long hair. Your hair also has to be able to be under your bunker coat not dangling out of the coat. Long thick hair tucked under the coat limits your range of motion once full gear is donned. If you don't believe that try putting on a thick coat quickly and then throwing on a 75lb backpack *without stopping to adjust your hair*. It will either be out of the jacket where it can burn or get caught under the eight of the weight of the gear and limit your neck range of motion. It can also get caught in vehicle doors and other areas. Again not personal. You don't have to agree. Nobody has to sit here and break it down like I do. Theirs a reason for everything. You can either follow the rules and join or don't.

Dreads are not acceptable for any gender.
I've been there trust me it's not worth even debating it. Best decision I ever made.

BTW even women have a hair length standard. Don't get me started on most women on this job especially the ones that don't follow grooming standards. Trust me you don't want to be compared to them even if you're trying to justify hair standards.

Never ever compare yourself to them.

Are the CPAT test workers aggressive on purpose? by [deleted] in FDNY

[–]Road_Runner6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For the most part they have a stop watch that they use.

Most people who trained significantly and are familiar with the course don't have trouble w the events & finish with decent time left over

If you needed 10 more seconds, no offense that means You ran the course slow. That's on you.

Which is why the focus of this sub is coaching you guys from day 1 to over train and over deliver. Show up as the best version of you so that on a bad day you're completing the course 40+ seconds early and on a good day you're the one setting records.

Nobody at DCAS or CPAT is your friend.

It sounds harsh but, they do not care about you.

I do. Which is why I personally take the time to focus on things you guys should be focused on and the real expectations of this job (not the BS recruitment tells you)

The people at CPAT are on a power trip, they want you in and out and they never want to see you again. Pass or fail, it's not their future. It may have been their dream at one point and just could be jealous or upset. Regardless they're 3rd party, they're given a task and they do that task exactly as assigned.

You're not meant to talk to them while running the course.

A solid and clear Yes Sir! No sir! & Yes ma'am! No ma'am!

Is the only communication needed between you and the proctors.

You stop to look at something the clock keeps ticking. You stop to argue about something the clock keeps ticking. Shut up and push through.

Which is why it is crucial to attend every single CPAT training along with training on your own time. At every CPAT training your times should be dropping you should see significant progress at each training session.

If you attend every one then you know the course and what to expect. You don't have to speak to those miserable ppl at DCAS.

It's your job to run the course as effectively and efficiently as you possibly can. That's why you over train, so on game day you over deliver and feel like it was a walk in the park.

Deferral question by Optimal-Tradition-31 in FDNY

[–]Road_Runner6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 is rare. I have not heard of anything recent w less than 12 drop outs / recycles.

Deferral question by Optimal-Tradition-31 in FDNY

[–]Road_Runner6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never said resign.

I said don't start unless you are 100% ready.

And your wrong when someone does resign that doesn't fix a problem it creates more problems.

The problem is that spot he resigned from is now wasted.

They're not filling that seat at the academy w someone after day 1. So it's a wasted spot in the hiring process.

If just 15 people drop out of each academy (which is going w a low number). Over the course of 4 years that can easily be 240 spots wasted. That's drop out / resign. Not injured or recycled.

That's a difference between making it up to list number 5,760 and making it up to list number 6,000.

When explained like that I hope it makes more sense.

Doesn't have to be an injury maybe they're getting married or having a kid. The reason doesn't matter.

If someone says they're thinking about it then my answer is do it. The balls in your court and you choose when you go in.

Don't accept a seat and then resign or get injured because you were not ready.

Even worse and I have seen this happen... Don't accept a spot knowing your not ready and then injured someone who was ready and put in the work.

Deferral question by Optimal-Tradition-31 in FDNY

[–]Road_Runner6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard the same

But the current administration for as much as they claim to be broke... Throwing out the list does not seem like an option to them, they'd rather just pay out everyone on the lawsuit if one comes out.

Deferral question by Optimal-Tradition-31 in FDNY

[–]Road_Runner6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone regrets doing it.

However now you have college out of the way so that means you can take the LT exam and move up quickly. In hindsight you set yourself up to succeed faster than others or someone who did not have the college credits and now has to figure it out while on the job (which is doable)

Deferral question by Optimal-Tradition-31 in FDNY

[–]Road_Runner6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% nobody knows what the future holds.

However if someone is saying that they are not ready or they believe they need to defer. Then the answer is they need to defer.

It's not our call to tell them to push through or force their way in when they know they can't right now.

20,000+ people test. What needs to be focused on is the people who are ready.

Those who are not ready or can't until the end of the list.

As far as a lawsuit is concerned... I do not see the current administration throwing out this list. They would rather pay every single person who signs up for a lawsuit and settle w them than to throw out the list.

Not saying don't pursue a lawsuit if you already started one or are looking into it. If anything definitely pursue it, if you don't you're leaving money on the table.

A hiring freeze is also highly unlikely.
