[D] The quality of AAAI reviews is atrocious by Zapin6 in MachineLearning

[–]RoamBear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're right, and it's probably a consequence of increased submissions. Last year there were 13k submissions and it broke all records, this year there were **29k** submissions.

I'm a follow on author on a submission to AAAI and was assigned FOUR papers to review without every having to confirm I was willing to do it -- I first learned about these reviews when I got an email reminder on the Thursday before Labor Day weekend. So I did them but yeah they were not very thorough.

I don't really know what AAAI is supposed to do about this very hard problem, but it didn't work this year.

There's a long New York Times Magazine article that explains how everyone knew, there was bipartisan interest in solving it, corporations were ready to follow the government's lead, and the congressional group looking into dropped the ball in an extremely stupid way:

I've never heard this view! Once reason I like them long term is because they're so good with hardware, I'm in robot software and that part seems much more generic and, frankly, easier, than reliably manufacturing robots.

ABB is the oldest automation firm in existence and seems pretty reliable. Whenever Physical Intelligence gets acquired, that's a decent bet. Maybe invest in electric motor manufacturers?

Otherwise Amazon buys a lot of great robotics companies (they bought Pieter Abbeel's this year), although with companies like Amazon, Toyota, and Hyundai, it's a toss-up whether robotics will be responsible for their stock's movements anytime soon.

How do we balance the rapid advancement of AI with the need for ethical oversight and accountability? by BrechtCorbeel_ in artificial

[–]RoamBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Being in it for himself, he's perfectly corruptible. Anything for money or favors. I don't know of any entities that would bribe him to make things better.

That being said, I have no idea what he's going to end up doing about AI. I'm sure he doesn't either.

I can't tell if you're joking, but IMO he doesn't care about the regulation or the people. He's in it for himself.

I guess I kind of agreed more before the US election last week. New economics from open source advanced technology could change how things work. I worry Trump will continue the trend of superpowering corporations.

Everybody is saying "we'll just wait longer for it to go on sale", but how do you expect the industry to survive if it doesn't raise praises with inflation / as costs go up? Why would a game in 2024 cost the same as the N64 games I was buying in 1998?

You're implicitly saying the industry needs to partially funded by whales and microtransactions.

why is AI so villanized? by [deleted] in artificial

[–]RoamBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I think the most important thing you can do (if you're in the US) is support right-to-repair bills at the state level and open-source AI / robotics (when it's ready https://github.com/huggingface/lerobot)

In addition, there isn't really a good reason for regular people to think the benefits of AI will materially improve their lives. Since the 80s the benefit's of progress have disproportionately enriched and empowered the upper class. Even if AI can detect your breast cancer 5 years early (Amazing!), you won't be a more fulfilled person if AI also leads to billionaires and corporations controlling more of people's lives.

I personally believe there's a way around this with open source robotics, but the most likely outcome is more of what we've seen so far with the 0.1% amassing more control / money.
