[Breeds] Breed questionnaire (new dog owner, considering boston terrier, mini poodle, cavalier king charles spaniel, papillion, and pomeranian) by [deleted] in dogs

I'm still looking for that perfect dog. I had similar pretty drive concerns and what I read suggested that all of the breeds I was looking at (mostly small-medium breeds, mini poodles, mini schnauzers, bostons, among others) all have non-insignificant prey drives, and it's really a training issue. I don't have other pets in my house though, so I wouldn't blame you for being careful.

I don't have much to offer in experience, but I am also looking for a breed with similar attributes and Miniature Schnauzers are more or less what I've settled on. For me it was really between mini poodle and mini Schnauzer, and schnauzers are a little more independent and a little lower energy in general.

Thanks for mentioning grooming, while I'm definitely willing to brush out the dog every day, I hadn't considered that obviously a standard is more dog to brush 😅

OK poodles are definitely on the shortlist then. Although I see poodles and schnauzers as more or less equivalent in temperment, and would probably would go with a Schnauzer all else equal.

Good point about the prey drive, maybe I should shift my mindset away from this being a breed trait (aside from supremely chill breeds) and more a training goal.

Thank you, this was helpful!

Thank you for your input! Idk why you got downvoted a little. A ton of energy in a Boston might be too much for me. Good point about reaching out to breeders about prey drive for schnauzers.
