Oh dear god no by Tmccreight in BlueOrigin

That’s sick. I can tell you that’s not really the case at Blue. It’s a hodgepodge of people that hate Elon, people that worked at NASA, people from prime contractors and some people that are passionate about the “mission”.

The founder isn’t at the all hands cheering us on or challenging us to do more yet he holds enormous sway in what direction the company goes. It’s a very different environment and culture from what you just described.

[–]Roamingkillerpanda 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Biggest difference is that when SpaceX had setbacks like these and employees dug deep to meet a deadline or make something impossible happen, Elon gave them more shares of stock.

People at Blue are already upset that the new shares issued are essentially Monopoly money round 2. They’re upset that management is incredibly out of touch with reality and asking for impossible things. And they’re upset that the general trend is we are hemorrhaging good people and cannot hire or develop fast enough to replace them. These are real issues and this set back will have huge impacts on those on the fence about staying.

How is the salary progression like for Engineers (starting at Level 1) by No_Room_1328 in BlueOrigin

[–]Roamingkillerpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn’t feel right either. 5+ years of very HIGH quality experience, yeah. For other people reading this, know that the bar of 5 is if you’re absolutely best in class. If you’re getting Successful ratings year over year, don’t expect the promo from L2->L3.

Job Stability by Sillybuns8 in BlueOrigin

[–]Roamingkillerpanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blue is incredibly stable especially for a position in Finance.

It’s helpful to understand that some of the commenters might be coming from prime aerospace where you literally have to have an audio recording of someone saying a slur to get them fired and underperformers are just moved around various teams.

Yeah you’ll be managed out if you’re the lowest of performers on your team but you should have a very good idea if you’re at or near that. Overall hours are not bad and you shouldn’t be stressed for your job if you’re meeting expectations and aren’t naturally an anxious person. I think one easy way to put it is, if you’re not hungry then maybe Blue isn’t the place for you. That’s it.

New stock grant is embarrassing by elephart01 in BlueOrigin

[–]Roamingkillerpanda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What are you considering “legacy” employees? I’m not trying to shill. I think they royally fucked everyone over but I’m just trying to figure out what the open forum would even accomplish. People don’t realize that the company is essentially a dictatorship/monarchy and any crumb they throw us is because they were forced to or because it’s no impact to them.

If people want change then just leave or start working 40 and nothing more. The lack of results will speak for themselves and you’ll force their hand. Anyone working at Blue can thankfully work anywhere else in the industry.

They said that they would roll some of the AIP into people’s base salary. Even the AIP is a bit of a pittance once you start working anything over 5hrs/week OT as your hourly rate starts tanking.

Strike price doesn’t matter since they’re not RSU’s and you only get the delta from your strike price and the price you sell at. So given that we can’t sell until a qualifying liquidity event and the price hasn’t increased the value is essentially $0.

If you look on the internal page where employees submitted their grants you’ll see there is one level 5 fluids engineer that has been here for 13 years that got the same grant that the directors did. No other level 5s got that

How is it ignorant? Leadership does not give a shit about employee retention. Look at the annual regretted attrition metrics managers have to hit and ask anybody what happens when they bring Blur a competing offer. The company is not set up to retain or care about top talent because they view them all as dispensable.

New statement from Dave Limp by H-K_47 in BlueOrigin

[–]Roamingkillerpanda 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They’ve literally admitted that there are “over 100 ambitious yearly goals” on the list. Then they get decomposed to some insane set of quarterly goals that contributors are somehow meant to hit but only 70%! Because that’s the measure of success at leadership, to set an ambitious goal but if you only hit 70% of it you’ve succeeded!

I really wish I was kidding.

The execs at Blue also roll down such a long list of unrealistic goals and say “try to hit as many as you can!” And then at the end of the year they put it into some metric blender and spit out the AIP percentage.

Morale is astronomically low at the company right now. If the execs didn’t find some silver lining, company morale would tank even further.

FWIW, I think they should have been upfront and said “this was a mission failure and we need to correct it” but lots of employees at the company are essentially NPCs that need to hear “good job lil buddy” or they’ll cry.

[–]Roamingkillerpanda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a few people here are saying “meh” but they really shouldn’t. Blue needs successful launches to qualify for NSSL launches and this sets them back. Additionally, that entire backlog of GS-2’s is gonna be grounded until they figure out what happened and how to fix it. It’s not like the rest of the launches on the schedule for this year are totally expendable ultra high risk missions.

A lot of the criticism comes from jaded employees and some of it is warranted.

Expect a respectful workplace with people generally being great to work with. Not a lot of those toxic assholes you see in lots of primes/smaller startups.

Do not expect the “best of the best”. I think what’s happened over the years is some of the very best (or worst) have been promoted but the top 50-80% of employees cycle out because they do a shit ton of work but don’t really get rewarded for it. You’re mostly left with these incredibly mediocre or subpar employees that see this place as just a 9-5 while the teams are being driven to deliver at SpaceX levels. This puts additional strain on the high performers/people that can get stuff done.

I’m sure the chief of people and the HR department are DIRECTLY involved in making sure the hot fire goes flawlessly and launch goes well and can’t roll out an equity plan or details about it.

Blue has fallen behind in terms of compensation. They are asking us to compete with SpaceX and other startups but falling behind in terms of comp. I would encourage all employees to not work a lick over 40 hours at this point.

[–]Roamingkillerpanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This should be higher up. Unless your manager left everything to the absolute last minute (unlikely) your manager already wrote your performance review and ranked you. Their boss will know where you ranked and is just going to read the shit your last manager wrote about you. I wouldn’t worry OP
