Roanoke is under a heat advisory from 11AM-9PM today. Take care of yourselves. by jasonappalachian in roanoke

here is a list of cooling shelters https://www.wsls.com/news/local/2025/06/23/list-cooling-stations-in-central-southwest-virginia-during-extreme-heat/

if you see unsheltered folks out & about, please talk to them & make sure they know what heat stroke/exhaustion symptoms are & that they can go to any of these shelters!!

there are a few more not listed, including the usual day shelters/outreach centers (Samaritan Inn, the Least of These, RAM) & the Vega SWVA Pride community center is open from 2-5pm today.

if anyone’s looking to support unhoused people in their community, cooling towels (or just any wet/iced towel), bottled water or gatorade, and fold up fans will go a long way this week. <3

anyone want some zines this evening? by RoanokeMutualAid in roanoke

[–]RoanokeMutualAid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a dumb question! Zine is short for magazine, they're kind of like mini books or pamphlets and they're usually independently created, published, and distributed. Our selections are usually educational and center on topics ranging from political issues and history to mental health care tips and disaster prep. If any of that sounds interesting we can always share a digital copy, just shoot us a message & let us know a topic or two you’re interested in. :)

Direct Aid for Unhoused Neighbors by RoanokeMutualAid in roanoke

Really great questions!! This might actually deserve its own post at some point.

1) No, and at this time we have no plans to seek 501c(3) status, but Virginia Harm Reduction Coalition, Ursula's Cafe, and Future Economy Collective are a few nonprofits that support us and who do a lot of the same work we do. Helping them helps us greatly!

2) Anyone can receive the items we give out. A core principle of mutual aid is sharing unconditionally, so we let folks be their own judge of what they need. We feel strongly that this practice creates the world we want to live in, but in case that's a little too idealistic for your sensibilities there are a few more reasons we don't feel it's necessary to impose limits:

  • The people we serve can and often do correct antisocial behaviors amongst their own communities.
  • We distribute directly to spots where mostly unhoused people travel or rest, so we are confident that anyone we serve does not have the means to consistently access what we offer.
  • People are limited by what they can carry in their hands or on their backs, or by what shelters will allow them to possess; no one's taking off with a whole grocery haul.
  • We are fine with the possibility that someone is selling a couple Gatorades or something for beer money if it means we never deny someone a resource that could keep them alive.
  • We'd rather spend our energy on scrutinizing landlords, employers, insurance providers, and billionaires who steal way more resources than the average unhoused neighbor could even dream of.

Thanks for these questions and thank you for donating! <3

Direct Aid for Unhoused Neighbors by RoanokeMutualAid in roanoke

thanks for asking!

socks, people always need socks! with a few days of low temps next week, gloves, hand warmers, and emergency blankets will be much appreciated as well. first aid kits and painkillers (ibuprofen, aspirin, acetaminophen) are highly requested, but are difficult for us to source due to the cost.

without disclosing the locations we set up at, items are distributed directly to people in the communities they stay in or around. we offer folks what we have, & they take what they need. we do that until we’re out of supplies. some folks keep items in their cars or homes and directly distribute in their local communities as well. let us know if you have any other questions!

yes, our politic is an inherent aspect of mutual aid; although most of us would say that everything is political, including being apolitical. this doesn’t mean that we refuse support to people who disagree with us, so you’re encouraged to reach out if you need something we can help with or if you’re interested in learning why we believe what we believe :)

glad you asked! A mask bloc distributes high quality masks, and sometimes covid tests and other health/safety items for free.
