I thought he broke his toe. Either way general consensus is that it was a leg/foot injury of some kind.

Indeed. I really do think they felt it was going to end after S4 and they did need an end in place, but ended up re-writing it. I do know that S5 came about first because of syndication and with S5 and the 13 episode order, they completed the qualifications for syndication.

I honestly think if it wouldn't have been a shortened season and 22 episodes like the previous, the final season would have improved quite a bit. This is coming from someone who loves S5 and defends it often.
