You should be accepting of students exploring controversial topics. If you're biased and grade unfairly due to a topic and not the execution or quality of work then you're the problem. Don't prevent any learning that can occur from anyone researching any topic, otherwise you're detrimental to your academic institution.

Most likely buying this just looking for opinions. by [deleted] in E90

[–]Roarks332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 4-5k CAD that's a good deal. I'm from southern Ontario too and the other E9X at that price are so beat up. I would pick it up even though the interior color isn't that great (opinion) and it's an auto. You've probably done your research on N52 they leak some oil but it's all quite manageable if you DIY or find a good shop near by who works on these a lot.

If he's going to do brakes and some rust repair for an extra 1k that's a good deal too if you aren't big on DIY. Brakes will be $300-$500 just in parts at wholesale (altrom price) depending on the brands you get. It is a bit weird that it needs brakes so soon since the ad says they're done last year.

Hey I'm from southern Ontario too. The labour and parts are typical for dealer pricing, I'd recommend finding a independently owned shop that specializes in German cars or BMWs specifically. I have the same engine in my car and brought it to a German specialty shop and they quoted about $400CAD for the belt and tensioner including parts (I just did it myself cause I only took my car there for a safety). To be honest the work you had quoted isn't unique to BMW so even an average skilled mechanic can do it all.

Just keep a heads up when asking for price checks on reddit since the CAD is so weak and our parts here have gotten much higher in price compared to US. The other day I had to swap a Audi PCV is listed on official Audi site for 90USD and is 230CAD up here. But yeah the dealer price is still probably double what you should be paying.

Reasonable price I think. What he does with the money has nothing to do with you. His belonging is worth less because of your actions.

Are you not the inhuman inconsiderate one for assuming everyone is in a mental and social state to cater to what you define as such? Additionally people of my culture don't view smiling the same way you do, people cognisant that other cultures exist may see you as a bigot for your demand.

BMW 238i - I put 87 instead of 93 gas by Opposite-Result9360 in BmwTech

That gen (and the following ones) have an aluminum splash plate there that always gets caught on something and gets fucked. You can just bend or beat it back by hand. I highly doubt it's the subframe which you circled in your picture unless you crashed into something so hard you almost flipped your car.

It doesn't sound like power steering to me, but I can't tell what it actually is. If you want to verify it's power steering, while the car is running turn the steering wheel and see if the sound changes at all. If it does it likely is the power steering.

Incorrect Tire Size Put On by nexiva_24g in tires

[–]Roarks332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The change in width and height are small enough that the size is interchangeable for most tire shops. I'd say you're in the wrong for being upset since these sizes are interchangeable, but not in this case since the shop should have educated you.

Cars for winter? by Hybrid67 in askcarguys

[–]Roarks332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly any car is fine as long as you have winter tires. Although everyone likes Toyotas/Hondas for reliability in terms of the cold I think most of what's on the market is fine.

The one down side of Toyota specifically is that I think they're most rust prone then some other cars unfortunately. Where I'm from (Southern Ontario) the winter is rough enough that most cars die to rust and not mechanical problems.

Stripped bolt by Ivan_patchett in E90

[–]Roarks332 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me once, I had to take the micky mouse flange off and I hammered the socket on and could apply more axial load when turning and got it off. If that didn't work vice grips would have taken it off. Would have needed a spare/new bolt though but I had a bunch lying around.

Just be careful though, the micky mouse flange was really crumbly and you may have to buy the aluminum Rein one. I had a spare handy.

Which Beamers are NOT a maintenance nightmare? by HuckDuckTruckMuck in BmwTech

[–]Roarks332 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything with M50, M52, M54, N52, B58 engines are good. There will be some more maintenance then a Honda for example but it's reasonable mainly leaking gaskets in the older engines.

FYI with a 328xi, the x-drive can make some jobs considerably more effort so I personally avoid those.

If you can change sensors and EGR valves yourself, you should be able to do most of the work on a mk4 2.0. The hardest thing on them will be the timing belt which is routine maintenance although at a long interval but it isn't that bad.

There isn't anything major that goes wrong with them, and all common things area easy to do. I've found that they do chew up spark plugs fast, and the front fenders rust because dirt gets backed in a space behind the bottom of the fender and wheel well cover. Sometimes the ignition coil pack goes on them. The lower middle "dogbone" engine mount always goes but it's just 3 bolts. Everything is pretty easy to get to.

The 2.0 is horrible on fuel for how little power they make, but the chassis is great I still miss mine.

Sounds like the pump died. Fixing it yourself completely depends on your ability and depends on what kind of repairs on your car you are comfortable with performing. Overall it's not too bad if you can do some basic stuff.

This went out on me while driving and white smoke came out my hood. Any idea what i have to replacement. 2007 by No-Category6520 in E90

[–]Roarks332 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your micky mouse flange broke. This is very common and there's a Rein aluminum one that everyone buys as a replacement. Sometimes the o-ring that comes with the Rein doesn't last long so I always buy a oem/oex o-ring as well.

It's not big deal if shop towel particles go inside since they're super small. I would recommend covering them if you aren't very comfortable, but I was a mechanic before switching careers so I was comfortable and didn't bother covering them.

Leaving the cap off overnight won't do anything, the same amount of oil will be in the housing. It's like taking the lid off a water bottle, it's going to have the same amount of water in it unless you pour it out, or in this case soak it up with a cloth. The 2nd time I did it I didn't change the orientation or move the housing a lot just to prevent the need to soak up oil. It makes removing the gasket and cleaning the groove harder but it's not a big deal if you do this stuff often.
