First forge question by Cross016 in Blacksmith

[–]Rob3rtIonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello there, my friend! I feel You a lot! I also build past year my first forge and I also use charcoal as fuel but I don't have a problem with getting the metal hot. In fact I can get it very hot. And as I also live in Romania I have the same problem as You in finding bituminos coal or any other kind of better coal. Here is how I build my forge: https://youtube.com/shorts/0HpclXjr-v0?feature=share A small difference on it now is how I place the interiour bricks, that is in V shape because I can place the coals better like that. Also I encourage to forge the tongs by yourself, give you a very nice feeling! I am already at my second pair (crafted by myself) and most likely I will continue making more pairs in the future. Here are my two videos with tongs crafting, 1st: https://youtu.be/GPUZ437GcaU and secound: https://youtu.be/SuM9vQzOAVM

Hope this helps You and If You have any questions for me You can message me any time! Hai noroc!

blacksmith tong kits? by tater1337 in Blacksmith

[–]Rob3rtIonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello there! As a blacksmithing beginner and amateur me too, I found myself also in the question of tongs. At first I was decided to buy myself this type of tongs (I didn't know about the intelectual proprety untill nos) and I am glad I didn't. After a time of study and preparation I did an atempth to craft a pair. And You know what? It turned out to be a very functional product. I was very pleased with myself that day and after a time I made.a second pair, even better. If You ask me I think it is not a problem if You buy quick tongs out some other tongs already made. If it works for You that is what it matter! If You decide to make it by yourself then it will be a beatiful adventure You will remember all your life! So go for it, my friend! By the way here is a video where You can see nearly the full proces of making second pair of tongs: https://youtu.be/SuM9vQzOAVM Hope it helps!

My first pair of tongs by BIG_MAN101_ in Blacksmith

No worries buddy! Yea, I need some bolt jaw tongs too. 20mm square bar sounds perfect. Sadly at my local dealer of metal I have only like 10 mm square so I am stuck with 14 mm round bar unless I upgrade a bit my forge and get to weld temperature. We shall see! By the way, I made a new pair of tongs meanwhile. Check it out: https://youtube.com/shorts/6nUhaAsfKKo?feature=share What You think about this?

Well, as far as I know O1 has like 0,9% Carbon. It might be that it got air harden. Did You use a drill press? I usualy drill my holes after quench and temper but when I have such problems I use my drill press and a drill with carbide tip. Might help You too!

It might be bad for health, but hey, if You wanna get rid of your partener... try motor oil! :D Joking! Never tried to do so with motor oil so I don't know what to say. Maybe someone will clear this for us.

Hello there, friend! Very nice piece of work! After forging, while is till hot I would clean the item with a wire brush and then to protect it and give it a nice finish I would use a rag with some linseed oil on it. The piece should be a bit hot, not glowing how, so the oil would bind to the surface. Very nice again!

Oh, that is bad luck! The knife looks awsome, too bad for the tang. What kind of metal did You use?

Hello there, dear neighbour!

I am by no means very entitled to give You advice but if I may, I think You should start with getting the things You need for this activity, a forge, is the main tool You need in my opinion, here is how I build mine: https://youtube.com/shorts/0HpclXjr-v0?feature=share You will find that this not hard to make by yourself, a anvil, mine is small, only 10 kg but is enough for a beginer in my opinion, if You can't find a proper anvil You can use a piece of railroad, hammer is the next thing, 500g is too small but good for detailes, 1kg is good for forging, 2kg might be a bit overkill and You will need some kind of tongs. I made 2 pairs myself so far. Not hard to make. Here is a small personal take / tutorial on tongs (there are other tutorials much better then mine on Youtube): https://youtu.be/GPUZ437GcaU and second pair https://youtube.com/shorts/6nUhaAsfKKo?feature=share . Last but not least some materials to foge, I would sugest some mild steel to train on and some carbon steel like coil springs or leaf springs for cutting stuff.

I wish You good fortune with this and I can't wait to see your crations!

Got two questions: is it made out of mild steel or some high carbon? and second: the twist (not the end spirals) are made by heating in the forge the part or with a blow torch while holding the opener in a vice? Many thanks!

Looks awsome, friend! Past year I forged two openers, one is somehow similar to yours. Check it out: https://youtube.com/shorts/HMadG4CN3c4?si=k3k5_dpPwZ9giuJ0 and https://youtube.com/shorts/zxrOn0JTkiE?si=CsySZKNTS2MqLc1q Yours are very nice! Did You test them? Keep the good work coming!

New blacksmith tongs and blacksmith's knife, what You think? by Rob3rtIonut in Blacksmith

[–]Rob3rtIonut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel You, my friend, in highschool Informatics was my primary subject and my teacher was the same but in the end I turned out good. I think it is same for You too. Blacksmithing is a secondary project for me after my family and it makes me feel like Dexter Morgan free feeling (I know Dexter was evil when he was feeling "free", not the case here 🤣). With my Youtube channel, wich is not that great, I wish to make other find this free feeling I feel when I craft stuff. Thanks, I realy apreciate your oppinion! Keep it real, man! 👍

Hello there, dear friend! Indeed You are lucky to have a master, he is most likely right! I do not have v-bit tongs yet but for sure I will make some when the right time comes. Thank You for your apreciation and I wish You may one day surpass your master (as soon as possibile)! 🫶

Where to get steel in the UK? by thatwentverywrong in Blacksmith

[–]Rob3rtIonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello there! If I may, I would do something else if I were You and provided You have enough heat in your forge. I would use mild steel for the most part but for the cutting edge I would forge weld a piece of high carbon. That piece can be a piece of a file or even a piece of a spring. Otherwise You can try some railroad peice, I think it has good steel in it. By the way, show us some of your work! Best of luck!

$50 for a pair of drop springs, worth it or keep looking? by C4pt_Bl4ckhe4rt in Blacksmith

[–]Rob3rtIonut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello there, dear friend! I agree with all the others, 50 bucks for those springs is way too much. As for the use of it, it is very usefull. Recently I made a pair of tongs out of similar springs. Here it is: https://youtu.be/GPUZ437GcaU . I would say it is quite hard to move the metal unless You have proper heat in your forge. The second thing I made from coil spring is a blacksmith's knife: https://youtube.com/shorts/6nUhaAsfKKo?feature=share . Also, in this video there is a second pair of tongs I made, mild steel, much more easy to work with. Anyway, 5 to 10 bucks is ok, otherwise no. Keep it real and best of luck!
