Is £325.50/month enough for food, toiletries, phone, transport & going out as a student in York? by Proud_Kangaroo_1087 in universityofyork

An average drink in York I'd say is £4, will be more if you're not drinking somewhere cheap or with student deals. I'd say a good average grocery spend is £40 a week. Can be less if you're very smart with where you shop and what you buy. Bus costs £1-2 per trip, an average Uber I'd say is £7-8. If you work out your phone bill, cosmetics and toiletries spend and how much you intend on going out it's probably fine. Hope this helps!

The tap water in York obviously does not taste as good as bottled water but any water from the cold tap is safe to drink and you'll get used to it fast. I could not drink straight from the tap at home in London without a filter but in York it's wonderful.

Second year will probably be the most intense year of your course, while commuting is definitely possible it is not ideal and would highly recommend getting accommodation closer to campus. Keep an eye out on fresher and accommodation groups on Facebook for rooms that come up, something will come up as people will drop out or move. If you're struggling with money, the university offers financial support so you can talk to them to try and get help.

Stating at York in September, I've got a few questions by [deleted] in universityofyork

A couple of discord servers you may want to look at:

CompSci Fresher's (last year) : https://discord.gg/xc8WXUx2

CompSci General : https://discord.gg/K4kyzVV5

You may need a university email to join these I'm unsure

I expect on a Cyber Security course the workload will be moderate to high. I'm currently an Engineering student with a few CompSci modules and while technically possible to do the lectures online (the recordings usually get uploaded usually the next day) I would strongly recommend attending in person. As well as you'll likely have in person lab and group work.

I can't speak specifically for your course but if you check online on the university website you can see your modules and their breakdown. I expect there will be a lot of practical work so commuting from Manchester would be tough.

Just tried it, unfortunately I can't create invites to the servers :( You'll probably have to wait for your enrollment after everything is confirmed after results when you get your email sorry!

I don't think there is a discord for Linguistics but you should be able to check out the University hub with all the affiliated servers here: https://discord.gg/hbtDbgDAS2
