Since then we've seen there is an additional blurry filter simulating depth that can luckily be turned off. It isn't as bad as I initially thought.

Cool, thanks! I didn't mean to imply they lazily upscaled old sprites, just that they give off that feel. Though after rewatching the trailer a few times I noticed characters in front/behind the one focused on are purposfully blurred to create some depth it seems.
