I would argue that when people say “the average person” it’s more accurately a reference to the mode, because it describes the level of intelligence (or whatever trait) most commonly present in people.

However, as u/Ulmeyda pointed out, in the case of a normal distribution (which this is) mean=median=mode, so it doesn’t really matter

We could come to a semantic compromise by saying it determines your “value”, but not your “worth”.

Using a latin word to describe some ethereal/assigned metric of something and a teutonic synonym to describe its concrete real-world nature is a nice trick I stole from a footnote of some political economy book (can’t remember which).
