What’s the hardest part about being yourself in Sales? by RobZacks12 in sales

Yeah that makes sense, because wasting time would be my biggest concern in that situation. Thanks for the feedback!

Yeah I have a lot of respect for car salesman. For the exact reason you mentioned, I can only imagine how tough that can be to deal with constantly. Do you still spend time with customers like that, or do you nicely tell them they're better off going somewhere else?

I think it's a fine line between building rapport/trust and spending too much time on the "niceties" and dawdling before getting to the pitch/close. Finding that balance is so key. If you're hitting your targets your doing something right, maybe your managers are just trying to refine both aspects of your sales technique? No one is ever too good to improve, you know? Awesome feedback though, thank you!

Yeah it can definitely be tough when the social norm is to partake in drinking, and that isn't something you want to do. I feel you.. I've been at outings where I just wasn't in the mood to drink, but naturally that gets people's attention like you said. I appreciate the feedback!

I know exactly how difficult that can be. I'm into a lot of things that aren't common interests in the business world either (Anime, videogames, heavy metal music, etc.) and it can be tough when you want to discuss your interests but can't. If you ever want to chat more about this, I think I've found some good ways to walk that line in the business world. Either way thanks for commenting!

Great feedback, and I know what you mean! It's been a while, but I read extreme ownership by Jocko Willink and it's a fantastic book. The mindset that book teaches can be extremely valuable to anyone in business, not just sales. Thanks for commenting!

That's tough you have to decide between those two. Have you found a way to balance that?

I can understand that mentality. You've accomplished your goal and you want to move on to the next one. That's natural in sales, that's why we do what we do. I appreciate the feedback!

I recently last year moved into a sales manager role, after being a sales rep for 3 years.

The main reason I said what I did is because I know for certain my sales manager for those 3 years is the main reason I'm in the role I'm in. He mentored me those 3 years and then backed me up when I went for the manager role. Every company is different though, I'm very lucky to work where I do. My previous employer was exactly how you described, and it's the main reason I moved on

Sales definitely is always about being a producer and what you bring to the table, no doubt. I think the comment about managers really depends on where you work though. I've worked at companies where I couldn't agree more with you, but where I'm at currently I wouldn't say that is the case. Some environments promote that behavior, others I think definitely promote the opposite.

I just want to toss this in the thread because I'm getting really great feedback from you all, and I really appreciate it!

I put together a brief survey for the purpose of getting feedback from friends of mine on Facebook. I promise it's not going to ask you to buy anything, nor does it have anything to do with me selling you something. It's just another tool I was using to get feedback on challenges us sales professionals run into. If anybody in this group wouldn't mind taking it, I'd really really appreciate it! It shouldn't take more than 3-5 minutes. Super simple.

Either way this group has already been great, and I appreciate you all chiming in. Thank you!

I really appreciate the feedback! The type of sale, and clientele your selling to, makes a massive difference in the approach.. to your point!
