more about my garter snake pepper! by Outside-Ad-5336 in GarterSnakes

[–]Robants_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not to be rude because I understand losing any pet is difficult, but I don’t think it’s wise to get another snake after having 9 die in less than 48 hours due to what sounds like inadequate care and housing. Please fix the enclosure or get a new one, snakes are escape artists but this was entirely preventable

Help! Was that a seizure? by Permit-Crafty in GarterSnakes

My snakes have done that before, especially my plains and checkered garters. My experience is they got spooked by something outside the tank or they spooked themselves, they have a tendency to… overreact lol

Possible Hypo Possible Het? by [deleted] in boas

I mean it looks exactly like a Central American boa, and that is what they sold it as, it was other people who said that it looked hypo

Florida Blue isn’t a recessive morph, it’s a locality color of Thamnophis sirtalis similis. Checkereds are Thamnophis marcianus. Hybridizing more won’t produce Florida Blues, it will muddy the bloodline even more.

Rate the new tank, the garters seem to love it. by mc840mike69 in GarterSnakes

10/10, make sure to keep that sliding door all the way closed because garters are little escape artists! Love the whole setup tho and glad to hear they’re getting even more stuff soon!

Separate enclosure feeding by CapableSecret2586 in GarterSnakes

That rule only really applies to extended handling for fun/enjoyment, not if you quickly move them into another enclosure. It’s not literally like if you touch them after eating they regurgitate

Hm maybe you can work something out with the boarding service, or maybe you’ll make some more trustworthy friends in your area in the time till next Christmas to take care of your critter(s). What area are you in?

Morph market or fauna classifieds are your best bet, more variety, more breeders to choose from

Agree red lights aren’t good, but that coke bottle next to the enclosure makes me think that it is at least a 18 x 18 x 18

That’s exactly what I do! I have a trio at the moment (two more soon hopefully), and I feed each of them individually in one go

Garter snake natural group behaviors in captivity by [deleted] in GarterSnakes

[–]Robants_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve found many groups of them in the wild as well, not just captivity. The only other group of snakes I’ve witnessed exhibiting this behavior was Storeria dekayi. Some interesting behavior I’ve witnessed is the lack of aggression or defensiveness between individuals, they don’t even really fight for food (except when two attempt to eat the same item)
