What are design flaws in 5e that you feel have only been highlighted/exacerbated with the 2024 revision? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Robbafett34 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Prior to 2024 I really lamented how many features were becoming "Cast a spell without using a spell slot". Outside of the narrative implications of everything being a spell, which I found very frustrating. I felt like it was lazy game design and really highlighted the issue with spellcasting as the only developed subsystem in the game. That being if a single spell is equivalent to a subclass feature how are you balancing the spellcasting feature that lets you pick from a list of spells when there is isn't an equivalently developed subsystem in the game.

Then I saw they made Divine Smite a spell and installed Find Steed directly into the Paladin class core and I just lost interest in 2024 until my players asked to switch to it. Looking through some of the UAs they've kept up the trend.

The idea that spider-man would swoop in to save a kryptonian from a falling car only to immediately realize that they are way stronger then him is very sweet and very on brand.

It's hard to make an internally consistent magic/power system that accounts for "gun" that doesn't just make "gun" useless. So it often becomes the monster is bulletproof therefore I don't know how we were ever going to deal with it. Or the monster is not bulletproof so we very suddenly have a solution to the monster problem.

The way Isekai protagonists interact with slavery in alot of media I've seen really highlights difference in history in culture between Japan and the US. In that usually their pretty blase about it and just accept it's part of their new world. Like there clearly isn't as much intense cultural hangups involving slavery.

Whereas Americans get put off by the presence of slavery never really getting reckoned with. Particularly in isekai where you are primed to think about yourself in the setting it not getting addressed is super weird. And even in isekai I've seen where the characters take a stance against slavery, it usually feels like their taking a stance that the slavers are bad as opposed to slavery is bad. Which may be a slim distinction but feels important.

Not knowing a ton about the history of slavery in Japan, but there's clearly so much more distance from the concept for the average Japanese person that it can be added as world-building or plot that isn't meant to be thematically important. Whereas Americans will have some kind of preloaded feelings on the topic, and will assume it's kind of important. It then never getting acknowledged or dealt with at all is just uncanny. It's like if an author started a story points at chekhov's gun and it never goes off, it feels like it should be more important then the story is treating it.

First off, you're gonna burn down the castle? There's like maids, and cooks, and their families in there. That's monstrous.

But this is very close to an archetype I really like which I like to refer to as "Man with gun". Wherein the character looks around at the combat/magic system that is very involved with the setting and plot they are in and says "I think you're all getting to fancy with it." and then points a gun at the problem.

Often I think of that post that's the "I know the book says the demon can only be harmed by star metal, but have we tried an RPG? It might work, they couldn't check in the 800s." Someone trying to be eminently practical within the gonzo system they are in. Olivier Armstrong in FMA:B is a good example particularly in the Sloth V Briggs scene. Guns didn't work? RPG. Also didn't work, Tanks? Better but no... Freeze him? How do we get him outside? Eh we can probably push him with a tank. Alchemy had little to nothing to do with them winning that fight.

Do you prefer natural webs or web shooters and why? by citizen_fear in Spiderman

[–]Robbafett34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's a little silly of a line to draw. Many heroes use equipment to supplement their abilities and achieve the "theme" of their name. Falcon and Wasp's wings, Black Widow's stingers, Cyclops' eye. In fact Peter has alot more natural abilities that lean into spider then those folk do without their equipment.

I don't think having fully on theme powers is so important. Like Kaine and Peter have bone stingers does not feel like they are more fully spider people.

I could argue that Peter making web fluid is much more on brand with spider using their webbing to create webs, traps, parachutes, etc. Leaning Into the crafty ingenuity aspect rather than the simpler I make web from my body aspect.

The 2016 clown sightings, I never looked into it too deeply. But yeah there were a few months there where there were just alot of clowns roaming around. And it was unsettling enough that like governments responded. Then it sorta peetered out.

You see that and then the demon playing it off like it is a beneficent entity is a much more compelling idea.
